Setien finds calm in the chaos as Barca eye Clasico opportunity

Madrid (AFP) – Quique Setien admitted it was strange to take charge of a club sitting top of the table but Barcelona’s new coach heads into the Clasico on Sunday with a chance to take charge of the title race.

Barca can go five points clear of Real in La Liga with a victory at the Santiago Bernabeu, where they have won on their last three visits and not lost in the league since 2014.

Setien’s appointment on January 13 was greeted with a mixture of intrigue about the return of a purist coach at Camp Nou and scepticism that a 61-year-old, whose last jobs had been at Real Betis, Las Palmas and Lugo, had been given the keys to one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Yet six weeks into his tenure, Setien has brought some stability, at least on the pitch, given continuing political blunders off it mean another crisis never feels far away.

“Those things are significant but they don’t affect me,” Setien said after the spat between Lionel Messi and sporting director Eric Abidal earlier this month.

“And my job is to make sure they affect the players as little as possible.”

Setien met with Pep Guardiola after watching Manchester City defeat Real in the Champions League on Wednesday and it seems inconceivable the subject of how best to beat Zinedine Zidane’s side did not come up.

But while the pair share common ground over their views on how the game should be played, the first stage of Setien’s tenure has been as much about fighting fires as tweaking tactics.

In that way, he might have taken tips from Zidane, the Frenchman whose suitablity to Real at least in part stems from his ability to exude calm, even in the most trying moments.

Zidane has handled pointed questions this season about his own future, an injured 100 million-euro ($109 million) signing Eden Hazard, numerous controversies around Gareth Bale and a Clasico postponed due to riots.

– ‘Come from the bottom’ –

At Betis, Setien was not known for his subtlety in press conferences but if he was not already aware how significant that part of his new job would be, he will be now.

“I’ve come from the bottom, I’ve got used to working with what I have,” said Setien last month, when asked about the board’s failure to sign a striker.

“We spoke about the issue for one minute,” he then said in reference to Messi’s dispute with Abidal. “I’m interested in the football. Anything else is something I can’t control.”

Arsenal loss shows cost of Champions League absence

London (AFP) – The cost of life outside the Champions League was made clear when Arsenal published accounts showing the club had made a loss of £27.1 million ($34.6 million).

Friday’s financial revelations –the Gunners’ first overall loss in nearly 20 years — followed their shock last 32 Europa League exit at the hands of Olympiakos after the London club conceded a last-minute goal at the Emirates Stadium.

Thursday’s loss in Europe’s second-tier club tournament means Arsenal, who reached last season’s final, will miss out on further broadcasting revenue, as well as potential prize money.

And with the Gunners seven points adrift of the top four in the Premier League as well, they are struggling to qualify for next season’s edition of the Champions League.

Arsenal’s parent holding company published accounts covering the year ending May 31 2019, which report the group’s loss for the period after tax as £27.1 million — compared to a profit of £56.5 million from 2018.

The club said overall operating profits were impacted by “continued investment in player wages”, which increased to £231.7 million.

The accounts also showed “fairly limited” player trading activity, compared to total profit on sales of some £120 million in 2018 involving the departures of the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott.

Arsenal said this, coupled with other operating profits “adversely impacted by participation in the UEFA Europa League as opposed to the more lucrative UEFA Champions League”, had “a significant impact on overall profitability”.

“Our player trading profit for this financial year was limited and this combined with a second consecutive season of Europa League football has meant the club recorded its first overall loss since 2002,” said club chairman Chips Keswick.

“For 2019/20 we will see increased commercial revenues from Adidas and our renewed deal with Emirates, but another season outside the Champions League will continue to apply pressure to our financial results.”

Arsenal’s losses were a stark contrast to Liverpool, who on Thursday announced a pre-tax profit of £42 million last year despite a record £223 million investment on players.

EPL commentator assignments on NBC Sports, Gameweek 28

NBC Sports’ coverage of the Premier League continues this weekend, headlined by Mohamed Salah and first-place Liverpool aiming for a top-flight record 19th consecutive league win as they travel to face Watford this Saturday, Feb. 29, at 12:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN and Universo. As the season progresses, NBC Sports will continue to chronicle “Liverpool’s 30 Year Wait,” as the club close in on their first league title since 1989-90 and their first-ever Premier League title.

On Monday, the Reds overcame a 2nd-half deficit to defeat West Ham, 3-2, marking their 18th consecutive league win and matching Manchester City’s top-flight record for consecutive victories set in 2017. Liverpool currently sit 22 points ahead of second-place Manchester City. Arlo White and Lee Dixon will call Saturday’s match.

The weekend’s coverage begins on Friday, Feb. 28, with Premier League Live at 2 p.m. ET on NBCSN, followed by Norwich City v. third-place Leicester City at 3 p.m. ET.

Saturday’s coverage kicks off with Premier League Mornings at 7 a.m. ET on NBCSN. The day’s match coverage begins at 7:30 a.m. ET on NBCSN with Brighton & Hove Albion v. Crystal Palace. Lampard dismisses reports Kepa wants to leave Chelsea

London (AFP) – Frank Lampard has dismissed reports Kepa Arrizabalaga wants to leave Chelsea after the world’s most expensive goalkeeper was dropped following a series of costly mistakes.

Blues boss Lampard has picked Willy Caballero instead of Kepa for Chelsea’s past five matches.

Kepa, who joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao for £72 million ($92 million) in 2018, is believed to be unhappy with the situation.

Reports say he feels Lampard has broken a verbal agreement to keep him as the first-choice keeper.

The 25-year-old is also said to be concerned his place in the Spain squad for Euro 2020 will be in doubt if he fails to get back into the Chelsea team soon.

Caballero, 38, has performed adequately following his promotion and is likely to remain in goal for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth.

But Lampard rejected suggestions Kepa could be headed for a Stamford Bridge exit at the end of the season, saying he could still force his way back into the starting lineup.

“I have read a bit of false, nonsense articles this week, people probably guessing on players,” Lampard told reporters on Friday.

“Every time a Chelsea player puts on the shirt they are in control of their destiny somewhat individually. We can’t always control collectively what the result will be.”

“All I am focusing on is game by game now to get the best finish to the season that we possibly can,” he added.

“Then of course there are decisions for the club ongoing in the summer, we have to look at that. But no way am I jumping forward to the future now and a lot of those reports are wrong.”

Kepa’s high-profile errors against Newcastle and Arsenal among others proved too much for Lampard to take.

It was reported Chelsea’s hierarchy were unhappy with Lampard’s decision to axe Kepa because it could damage his value if the club have to sell him in the close-season.

Asked about his relationship with his star, Lampard conceded it was hard to keep everyone happy: “My relationship is fine. Between player and manager I have around 20 players or so to keep happy, I can’t keep them all happy at the same time.

“All I expect is their professionalism in training, which Kepa has given. Every position is the same.”
