Arsenal get their man Aubameyang, Mahrez in City’s sights

London (AFP) – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund for a club record fee of £56 million (63.7 million euros, 79.2 million euros) on Wednesday, in the biggest deal so far on transfer deadline day.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger — who last August kept the football world on tenterhooks as he held out selling Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City because he failed to secure Thomas Lemar from Monaco — did not wait until the last minute to land the Gabon striker.

Wenger persuaded the Arsenal board to pay more for the 28-year-old than the £46.5 million they shelled out for Frenchman ALexandre Lacazette last August.

Dortmund have eyed up a six-month loan move for Belgian international Michy Batshuayi from champions Chelsea, who have stipulated there will be no option to buy at the end of that period.

“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has joined us from Borussia Dortmund on a long-term contract for a club-record fee,” the statement from Arsenal said.

The club described him as “one of the world’s most highly-rated strikers”.

“He scored 98 goals in 144 Bundesliga games for Dortmund and had a hand in 172 goals in 213 matches in all competitions for his former club,” it continued.

Aubameyang’s arrival should see French veteran Olivier Giroud completing the musical chairs by signing for Chelsea even though Wenger was loathe to let him move to a rival as Sanchez joined Manchester United earlier this month.

However, the French striker is keen to stay in London as he seeks regular first team action to secure his place in France’s World Cup squad.

– Surprise Mahrez bid –

Aubameyang will alleviate the pressure on Lacazette although he would be ineligible for the Europa League having already played in the Champions League this campaign.

Elsewhere runaway leaders Manchester City have lodged a surprise £60 million bid for 2016 champions Leicester City’s Algerian star Riyad Mahrez, who ignored manager Claude Puel’s pleas for him to stay by putting in a transfer request.

However, Leicester are unlikely to let the 26-year-old — who was a key player in their stunning title success in 2016 and who has returned to form this term after a dip last season — leave for less than £90 million.

City have lost influential Germany winger Leroy Sane for up to seven weeks with an ankle injury and with the club competing on four fronts Guardiola suggested he may require a replacement.

“Right now, it’s the same as (Alexis) Sanchez, it’s not the place to talk about it. It’s so difficult,” City manager Pep Guardiola said on Tuesday when asked about Mahrez.

“If things are not possible, then nothing is going to happen. We don’t have too much and we play every three days. We have to find solutions.”

It’s not just the top clubs involved in the frenetic last few hours of a January that apart from Sanchez becoming the highest-paid player in the league — on a reported pre-tax £500,000 a week — has seen City pay a record fee of £57 million for young French centre-back Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao.

Tottenham too are getting close to signing Brazilian Lucas Moura, who has fallen out of favour at French giants Paris Saint Germain with the arrivals of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

The 25-year-old has according to reports passed his medical and would be the fifth most expensive signing in the club’s history — PSG would like the majority of the £26.5 million fee paid up front.

Those fighting to remain in the cash-rich upper echelon will also get in on the act with Swansea — whose win over Liverpool saw them move out of the bottom three — seeking to bring Ghanaian striker Andre Ayew back to Wales.

The Swans are hoping to sign the 28-year-old for around £18million according to the London Evening Standard — having sold him to the Hammers for £20.5 million in 2016 — but the London side who have only Javier Hernandez as their one fit striker will want to bring in a replacement.

Watford’s long-time servant Troy Deeney could fill the void and is valued at £16 million to leave the club he has been with since 2010.

Aubameyang joins Arsenal from Dortmund for record fee

London (AFP) – Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has joined Arsenal for a record fee for the Gunners, a reported £56 million ($79.2 million, 63.7 million euros), from Bundesliga outfit Borussia Dortmund, both clubs confirmed Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Gabon striker, who has scored 141 goals for Dortmund since joining in 2013, signed a long-term contract with the storied London club.

His transfer fee outstrips the £46.5 million that Arsenal paid for French striker Alexandre Lacazette last August. Aubameyang’s arrival is likely to lead to the departure of veteran marksman Olivier Giroud.

“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has joined us from Borussia Dortmund on a long-term contract for a club-record fee,” the statement from Arsenal said.

The club described him as “one of the world’s most highly-rated strikers”.

“He scored 98 goals in 144 Bundesliga games for Dortmund and had a hand in 172 goals in 213 matches in all competitions for his former club,” it continued.

“That works out at an average of 96 minutes per goal or assist.

“Auba is the Gabon captain and all-time top goalscorer, and became the first Gabonese winner of the African Footballer of the Year award in 2015.”

‘Complicated’ Aubameyang deal set to go to the wire on deadline day

London (AFP) – Arsene Wenger’s transfer dealings will not for the first time dominate deadline day on Wednesday as the Arsenal manager tries to secure the signing of Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aumbeyang in a deal he admits is “complicated”.

Wenger — who kept the football world on tenterhooks last August as he held out selling Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City because he failed to secure Thomas Lemar from Monaco — has persuaded the board to offer a club record £60 million ($84 million, 68 million euros) for the Gabonese marksman.

However, the 28-year-old’s move likely depends on Dortmund securing a replacement, thought to be Belgian international Michy Batshuayi from champions Chelsea, and the latter getting French veteran Olivier Giroud from the Gunners.

Wenger would prefer not to let Giroud join a major rival having already seen Sanchez move to Mnachester United earlier this month but the French striker is keen to stay in London as he seeks regular first team action to secure his place in France’s World Cup squad.

“Every detail can make deals and the deals nowadays are so complicated that, so long as you have not finished it, you cannot be too confident — it doesn’t help too much,” said Wenger after his side lost 3-1 to Premier League strugglers Swansea on Tuesday.

Klopp relieved as Liverpool bounce back

Huddersfield (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp believes Liverpool have got their season “back on track” after a 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town.

The Reds had stuttered recently with a defeat to Premier League strugglers Swansea City and an FA Cup exit at the hands of West Bromwich Albion.

However, Klopp’s side clinically sealed the points at the John Smith’s Stadium on Tuesday thanks to first-half goals from Emre Can and Roberto Firmino before Mohamed Salah converted a late penalty.

Liverpool consolidated their grip on fourth place and have a five-point cushion on fifth-placed Tottenham, who face Manchester United on Wednesday, in the race to qualify for the Champions League.

“Coming back on track is the most important thing,” Klopp said. “And now we have a few days to prepare for another difficult game against Tottenham.

“That was the reaction we needed to show. It was not brilliant, not the best game we have played so far but it was deserved.

“I think the best thing we did apart from scoring was our counter-pressing and defending situations when Huddersfield won the ball.

“We had more moments than three goals but it was difficult to play because they defended well.

“It was not a brilliant performance, but it was very mature and exactly what we needed at the right moment.

“I would love to come here again because it is a game where we don’t have to fly and can get here by bus! So I hope they stay in the league.”

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson made his first appearance since December and Klopp praised the midfielder’s performance on his return.

“Jordan Henderson is a very good footballer,” Klopp explained. “He is an England national player and our skipper and maybe the skipper of England.

“How can he not be a brilliant player if he’s at Liverpool? If someone does not see his value what can I do? I am happy that he is back.”

– No Ings move –

Klopp also noted the professionalism shown by Liverpool midfielder Can, who is out of contract at the end of the season.

Juventus have been strongly linked with the Germany international, but Klopp revealed he has no qualms about selecting Can despite the impasse over a new deal.

“Sometimes you want to keep a player and sometimes you want to sell a player,” he said.

“As long as people behave like Emre does and delivers, that’s all you want.

“If he goes we shake hands and say goodbye and if he stays we shake hands and say hello again.”

Klopp said he is not expecting a busy end to the transfer window and claimed there was no way that striker Danny Ings would be allowed to leave.

“No chance is Ings on the market, only if I am unconscious!” he added.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner insisted his players will not lose heart despite the defeat.

The Terriers are winless in seven games and only a point above the Premier League relegation zone.

Wagner said: “I see effort, I see commitment and attitude. I see togetherness and everything you need.

“The confidence is not at the highest point if you have a lot of defeats, but the good thing is we don’t like or enjoy this situation and period where we don’t collect points.

“However, we are not surprised and it is not something we haven’t expected so that makes it possible to manage.

“This means we lift our head now, prepare ourselves for Manchester United. A game at Old Trafford which one year ago nobody thought would happen.”
