Scotland’s Fleck to miss Netherlands friendly after contracting Covid-19

London (AFP) – Scotland midfielder John Fleck has tested positive for coronavirus and will not travel to Portugal for this week’s friendly with the Netherlands, the Scottish FA announced on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old will self isolate at the team’s Spanish training camp in La Finca where they are fine-tuning their preparations for Euro 2020.

“The Scottish FA can confirm that John Fleck has tested positive for COVID-19 at the Scotland National Team basecamp in La Finca,” read the statement.

“As a result, he will self-isolate as per Spanish Government guidelines and therefore not fly to Portugal for tomorrow’s match against Netherlands.

“The rest of the squad was retested for COVID-19 and returned negative results today (Tuesday).”

Scotland begin their first finals campaign since the 1998 World Cup against the Czech Republic at Hampden Park, Glasgow, on June 14.

They face historic rivals England at Wembley on June 18 and round off their group stage campaign against 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia four days later back at Hampden.

The rise of ‘King Kahn’ heralds new era at Bayern Munich

Berlin (AFP) – On the pitch, legendary Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn had a reputation for a fiery temper, but he has since mellowed enough to become the next chairman of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich.

The 51-year-old will replace outgoing chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who will step down at the end of June after 30 years in the club’s administration.

As a player, Kahn earned nicknames ‘King Kahn’ and ‘Vol-Kahn-o’ for his fierce competitive nature.

He won eight Bundesliga titles and lifted the German Cup on six occasions with Bayern before retiring in 2008 after 14 years with the club.

Since hanging up his gloves, Kahn has been steadily integrated into Bayern’s management, joining the club’s board in January 2020 and groomed to replace Rummenigge, 65.

Kahn has toned down his temper since once famously demanding “balls, we need balls!” during a post-match interview as Bayern captain.

He is remembered in Germany not only for his stunning saves which helped Bayern win the 2001 Champions League final on penalties, but also for a biting incident in 1999.

During a Bundesliga match, he nuzzled his teeth into the neck of bemused Dortmund forward Heiko Herrlich.

In a 2010 interview, Kahn admitted the incident forced him to curb his temper.

“That was the zenith of my aggression and it erupted inside of me,” he told Munich-based Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

“That was some kind of internal force inside me signalling: I can’t go on like this.”

Three-times voted the world’s best goalkeeper during his career, Kahn has kept busy since retiring.

He earned his coaching licence in 2010, worked as a TV pundit and completed an MBA in 2012, writing his thesis on “Strategic management in Germany’s professional football”.

After an 18-month apprenticeship, he will take the reins of Bayern next month.

The 2021-22 season will herald a new era for the Bundesliga giants with Julian Nagelsmann, 33, also replacing Hansi Flick as head coach.

– ‘Determined’ –

Kahn certainly has the pedigree, having kept 247 clean sheets in 632 appearances for Bayern.

Bayern are expecting a seemless transition of power from Rummenigge to Kahn.

“After his extremely successful professional career and his time as an entrepreneur, he has now been intensively involved in the board of directors of FC Bayern Munich,” said club president Herbert Hainer in a statement Tuesday.

“We are all convinced that Oliver Kahn is the right man to successfully shape the future of FC Bayern Munchen AG.”

However, he will have to develop his diplomatic skills in the spotlight at Bayern Munich.

His no-nonsense approach has polarised opinions of Kahn in Germany and as chairman, he will demand success at Bayern just as much as he did as a player.

The sight of Kahn charging out of his goal terrified opposing strikers, but he was just as difficult with team-mates.

He famously fell out with Bayern colleagues Luca Toni and Franck Ribery just before retiring at the end of 2007-08.

It took the arrival of future Bayern and German captain Manuel Neuer in 2011 to finally fill Kahn’s impressive shoes after a string of hopefuls failed to hold down the number one shirt in Munich.

In his autobiography, soberly titled “Number One”, Kahn describes himself as “determined and possessed like no other”.

With ‘King Kahn’ as their driving force at the helm, Bayern are now showing no sign of loosening their iron grip on the Bundesliga.

No sooner had Bayern secured a ninth straight title last month, than Kahn challenged the team to make it a decade of German league titles.

Veteran Quagliarella signs new Sampdoria deal

Milan (AFP) – Captain Fabio Quagliarella has signed a one-year contract extension with Sampdoria at 38 years old, the Italian side said on Tuesday.

Former Italy forward Quagliarella, who is the top Serie A scorer still playing, joined the Genoa-based outfit in 2016 from Torino.

“To the satisfaction of all, the striker with 233 appearances and 99 goals in our jersey has committed to Sampdoria until June 30, 2022,” the club said.

Quagliarella, who turns 39 in January, has spent his entire career in Italy with clubs including Juventus, Udinese, and Napoli.

He won three Serie A titles with Juve between 2010 and 2014, before moving to city rivals Torino, and back to Sampdoria in 2016, where he had a brief spell earlier in his career.

Last season Quagliarella netted 13 goals to bring his tally to 177 in 500 Serie A matches. He leads Lazio’s Ciro Immobile (155) and AC Milan’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic (147) in the Italian top-flight’s all-time list of active scorers.

Currently 14th overall among the all-time scorers in the competition, he needs 12 more goals to join the top 10.

He was Serie A’s top scorer in the 2018-19 season with 26 goals.

Kahn to replace Rummenigge as Bayern chairman next month

Berlin (AFP) – After 30 years in charge of Bayern Munich, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge will step down as chairman at the end of the month and be replaced by former Germany captain Oliver Kahn, the Bundesliga giants said on Tuesday.

Rummenigge had been due to see out his contract which expires at the end of 2021, but is leaving six months early to meet the end of the financial year on June 30.

“It is strategically the most sensible and logical point in time,” said Rummenigge, 65, with Kahn, 51, to be Bayern’s chairman when the new season starts in August.

“It is a farewell with satisfaction and pride. That was important to me,” he added.

Rummenigge’s departure will herald a new era at Bayern for the start of next season with Julian Nagelsmann, 33, also replacing Hansi Flick as coach for the campaign.

Rummenigge joined the club’s management in 1991 as vice-president and then became chairman in 2002, overseeing an incredible period of success.

With Rummenigge on board, Bayern won the Bundesliga 19 times and lifted the Champions League trophy in 2001, 2013 and 2020.

A former striker who made 95 appearances for West Germany, Rummenigge played for Bayern from 1974 to 1984.

He was part of the team which won the European Cup twice and was voted the Ballon d’Or winner in both 1980 and 1981.

However, Kahn has a pedigree to match having won the Bundesliga title eight times in 14 years at Bayern before retiring in 2008.

He earned the nickname ‘Vol-Kahn-o’ with his fiery temper and fierce determination to win.

The former goalkeeper played 86 times for Germany, captaining them to defeat against Brazil in the 2002 World Cup final and made 632 appearances for Bayern.

“As chairman, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has done great work for Bayern for over 20 years,” said Kahn, who has been tipped as their next chairman since joining the club’s board in January 2020.

“During this time, the club has won everything there was to win – you can’t rate his services to Bayern highly enough.

“The time has now come for me to take on responsibility at the top of Bayern Munich.

“In the past 18 months, I have got to know all facets of the club.

“I know what challenges we are facing. I am aware of the task and I am very much looking forward to it.”

Greenwood withdraws from England squad for Euro 2020

London (AFP) – Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has pulled out of England’s Euro 2020 squad due to injury, the club announced on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old was named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man pool, which is due to be cut to 26 later on Tuesday ahead of the tournament.

Greenwood, who made his international debut last September, will not be selected after United said playing in the competition would not be “beneficial” for an ongoing injury problem.

He scored 12 goals in 52 appearances for United this season, and played 100 minutes of the Europa League final defeat by Villarreal last week.

“Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from the provisional England Euro 2020 squad, in order to recover fully from an underlying injury that also kept him out of the Under-21 European Championship in March,” a club statement read.

“Mason’s club appearances were managed carefully to maintain his availability through the intensive 2020/21 Premier League and Europa League schedules.

“But a further spell of tournament football would not be beneficial and Mason will remain at Manchester United to recuperate and prepare for pre-season training.”

Asian World Cup qualifiers moved from China to Sharjah

Kuala Lumpur (AFP) – Several World Cup football qualifying matches scheduled to be played in China will be moved to in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, after coronavirus infections in the Syria and Maldives teams, officials said Tuesday.

Seven Asian qualifying Group A fixtures involving China, Syria, Maldives, the Philippines and Guam are affected, playing further havoc with the already heavily disrupted Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

The Chinese Football Association originally said on Monday the fixtures would be moved to Dubai, but the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) clarified Tuesday they would take place in neighbouring Sharjah.

The match schedule will be confirmed after discussions with the participating teams, the AFC said in a statement.

The games were supposed to be played over the next fortnight in a biosecure “bubble” in the Chinese city of Suzhou.

According to China’s Titan Sports, the Maldives and Syria are in Dubai and were denied permission to depart for China.

Maldives striker Ali Ashfaq tweeted that he had tested positive and won’t be playing in the qualifiers.

China, who smashed Guam 7-0 on Sunday, were scheduled to face the Maldives on Thursday, while Syria were to face the Maldives on June 7.

China are second in the group behind Syria and are fighting to keep their World Cup hopes alive. The games double as qualifiers for the 2023 Asian Cup in China.
