Fati an early ray of optimism for Messi, Koeman’s Barcelona

Madrid (AFP) – Barcelona’s biggest win over the summer might have been preventing Lionel Messi from leaving but Ansu Fati could yet be the one to lead Ronald Koeman’s recovery.

A brilliant start to the season for the 17-year-old continued on Thursday with another goal, his third from Barca’s opening two La Liga games, which have seen them score seven and concede none.

Add in Fati’s first international goal against Ukraine last month, which made him Spain’s youngest ever scorer, and the sense is of a teenager ready to be trusted now by both his club and his country.

Barcelona have needed a player like Fati, his pace and penetration down the left the perfect foil to the more considered creativity of Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Philippe Coutinho.

He makes opposition defences sit deeper, nervous of his runs in behind, and gives the team a more direct alternative when possession becomes predictable.

It was the role intended for Ousmane Dembele but the France attacker’s injuries have curtailed his opportunities and Fati has stepped into the void.

“Ansu is a great talent,” said Koema last week. “There aren’t many players at his age that have the level needed to play for Barca. He has to learn things but he has made his debut for the senior team for a reason.

“For me he is a player of the future but at his age today he is already very impressive.”

Born in Guinea-Bissau but raised in Seville, where he moved aged six, Fati has a fearlessness that scares defenders but most impressive is his maturity, the ability to shoot with a cool head and make the right decisions under pressure.

“Ansu is young but he deserves to be playing,” said Sergi Roberto after the 3-0 win over Celta Vigo on Thursday. “I hope he can keep it up.”

When Ernesto Valverde gave him his debut at the start of last season, Fati had not even played for Barcelona B.

‘A star is born’, wrote Mundo Deportivo but after an explosive start, he faded a little, in part because Valverde was determined not to ask too much from him too soon.

– Fati the future –

But Koeman could now be the beneficiary, even if it remains unlikely Fati will be able to sustain his current level of performance over the next eight months.

His body may not be physically ready for that demand and it would be a surprise if some degree of mental fatigue did not take its toll too.

Yet for now, Koeman has an infectious talent, providing Barca the boost to morale they so dearly needed, not only to blur the memory of the last few months but also to vindicate their new coach and his project.

When Luis Suarez was allowed to join Atletico Madrid, Messi vented his frustration with another swipe at club president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

But even Suarez’s double on his Atletico debut on Saturday was overshadowed by Fati, who scored twice against Villarreal and earned a penalty, converted by Messi.

Already, the leap is being made to annoint Fati as Messi’s successor, as well as his partner-in-chief, a weight Koeman will surely be keen to release.

But Barca’s boss will welcome the optimism and excitement for the future that Fati brings, even if he knows there are obstacles still to be overcome.

On Sunday, Sevilla will certainly offer a much sterner test as Julen Lopetegui’s side look to prove they are ready to play a more serious role in the title race this term.

Atletico Madrid have the same ambition, with Villarreal up next on Saturday following Wednesday’s goalless draw at at Huesca. Real Madrid head to Levante on Sunday.

Celtic face AC Milan in Europa League, Arsenal to play Dundalk

Paris (AFP) – Celtic will come up against Zlatan Ibrahimovic and AC Milan in a tough Europa League group while Rangers will face another former European Cup winner in Benfica and Friday’s draw also placed Arsenal in the same section as the Irish champions Dundalk.

Celtic were in the first pot of seeds for the draw after scraping past Bosnian side Sarajevo away in the play-offs on Thursday, but they could scarcely have asked for a tougher draw than that handed to them in Group H.

As well as Milan, Neil Lennon’s side will take on Czech Cup winners Sparta Prague and French club Lille, who qualified automatically for the group stage after finishing fourth in Ligue 1.

Milan, the seven-time European champions, qualified by winning 9-8 on penalties away to Rio Ave in Portugal on Thursday after being rescued by a Hakan Calhanoglu spot-kick right at the end of extra time.

The Scottish champions and Milan last met in the Champions League group stage in 2013/14. They also faced off several times in that competition in the previous decade including in 2006/07, when the Italians narrowly won their last-16 tie en route to winning the trophy.

Rangers’ reward for ousting Turkish giants Galatasaray in the play-offs and qualifying for the group stage for the third season running was a spot in Group D with Benfica, Standard Liege of Belgium and Lech Poznan of Poland.

Steven Gerrard’s side may fancy their chances of reaching the knockout phase again, after losing to Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16 last season.

There were fewer glamour ties for England’s representatives but all will be expected to progress.

Arsenal will play three teams who dropped out of the Champions League qualifiers in Rapid Vienna, Norwegian champions Molde, and Dundalk of Ireland.

It is Dundalk’s second appearance in the group stage in five seasons and the Arsenal clash in particular will be a glamour tie for them.

They will hope their fans can attend the match, with UEFA announcing on Thursday that they will allow spectators back at a maximum of 30 percent of capacity.

However, the loosening of restrictions is subject to national authorities giving the green light.

Leicester City will play Braga, AEK Athens and Zorya Luhansk of Ukraine in Group G, while Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur were placed in Group J alongside Bulgarian champions Ludogorets, LASK of Austria and Belgian Cup winners Antwerp.

Spurs have already travelled to Bulgaria in the competition this season, beating Lokomotiv Plovdiv 2-1 away in the second qualifying round last month.

The first round of group games will be played on October 22. This season’s final is scheduled to be played in Gdansk, Poland on May 26.

Top 5 must-see soccer games on TV this weekend

And just like that, an international break appears to ruin the momentum of the domestic football calendar. It’s a good job there’s a fine weekend of fixtures to come, isn’t there?

Our matches are from all over the globe, with two from the Premier League, one from Serie A, one from LaLiga and one from the Liga MX.

All kick offs are in Eastern time. Enjoy your weekend and enjoy the games!

Leeds United vs. Manchester City

Saturday, October 3, 12:30 p.m. ET, NBC, Universo, fuboTV, Hulu + Live TV and Sling Blue (free trial)

Leeds and Marcelo Bielsa will be out to ramp up the pressure on Pep Guardiola and Manchester City on Saturday night.

The newly-promoted outfit have enjoyed a strong start to life back in the top flight. Having done well in defeat at Liverpool on the opening day of the campaign, they’ve won consecutive matches against Fulham and Sheffield United. You suspect they’ll relish the chance to go at City.

For Guardiola, it feels as though Leeds are coming along at the wrong time, with his team clearly defensively and mentally vulnerable following their 5-2 hammering by Leicester. The home team are unlikely to take a backwards step and will be on the front foot throughout this contest at Elland Road, seeking to seize on any vulnerabilities from City.

If City can stave off what promises to be a chaotic start to the game, then Guardiola will back their superior quality to come to the fore. But at the moment, the Manchester outfit look anything but dependable and that should make for an intriguing affair.

Club America vs. Pumas UNAM

Saturday, October 3, 10 p.m. ET, Univision, TUDN, TUDNxtra (in English via fuboTV) and fubo Latino (free trial)

It’s the Clasico Capitalino in Mexico City this weekend, with Club America and Pumas UNAM seeking to inject some momentum into their respective Liga MX campaigns.

Both sides go into the game in mixed form, with Club America boasting the strongest attack in the division ahead of the weekend fixtures. Up top, Henry Martin and Federico Vinas have formed a strong partnership and have five goals each for the campaign already.

After a strong start to 2020-21, Pumas have lost some momentum in recent weeks, with a defeat to Leon followed up by a frustrating home draw with Necaxa, who are currently ranked 17th out of 18 teams in the division.

Pumas’ record at the Azteca leaves a lot to be desired in recent years too, having last won at the venue in the league in 2014.

Manchester United vs. Tottenham Hotspur

Sunday, October 4, 11:30 a.m. ET, NBCSN, Telemundo, fuboTV, Hulu + Live TV and Sling Blue (free trial)

Tottenham Hotspur’s relentless schedule will continue on Sunday, when they visit Manchester United in the most eye-catching of the Premier League’s fixtures this weekend.

Spurs were winners via a penalty shootout in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday against Chelsea, before hammering Maccabi Haifa 7-2 at home in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday. It means there will be some tired legs in Jose Mourinho’s squad for the weekend match, although Tottenham should be in good spirits.

United were also midweek winners, as they coasted past Brighton & Hove Albion in the League Cup. That was the second of two meetings in quick succession between the sides, with the first being a 3-2 for the Red Devils that was eventually settled by Bruno Fernandes’ 100th-minute penalty.

Already, neither United or Tottenham appear to have enough to mount a serious title challenge this season in the Premier League. This fixture could see one of them land a heavy early blow in the race for a top-four spot though.

Juventus vs. Napoli

Sunday, October 4, 2:45 p.m. ET, ESPN+

Andrea Pirlo’s Juventus are one of the most intriguing teams in European football this season and a set for a big test at the hands of Napoli on Sunday.

After winning his first game in charge routinely against Sampdoria, Pirlo’s side battled to a 2-2 draw against Roma in Week 2. Despite Adrien Rabiot’s red card when the Bianconeri were 2-1 down, Cristiano Ronaldo’s second goal of the night was enough for the champions to take a point back to Turin.

It means that Juventus are playing catch up to Napoli early in the season, with the Partenopei taking six points from a possible six to begin their Scudetto push. Gennaro Gattuso’s side have looked red-hot in attack so far, as they hammered Genoa 6-0 last weekend; a quartet of Dries Mertens, Lorenzo Insigne, Hirving Lozano and Victor Osimhen will cause problems for anyone.

Juventus will need to be wary as a result and there were signs against Roma that as of yet, the team isn’t completely settled defensively under Pirlo. Even so, on home soil the Bianconeri remain a fearsome prospect.

Sevilla vs. Barcelona

Sunday, October 4, 3 p.m. ET, beIN SPORTS, beIN SPORTS en EspaƱol, Fanatiz, fuboTV, Sling World Sports, Sling Latino and Vidgo (free trial)

Following a turbulent summer, Barcelona have actually enjoyed a strong start to life under new manager Ronald Koeman.

Despite going down to 10 men on Thursday, they were able to breeze past Celta Vigo 3-0. While Lionel Messi looks encouragingly zoned in after his summer transfer saga, Blaugrana supporters will also be encouraged by the form of Ansu Fati, who appears set for a breakthrough campaign.

The 17-year-old has already netted three times in Barcelona’s opening two matches and is providing a thrust that the team was lacking for long spells last term. Sevilla’s strong defensive setup will pose a different type of obstacle for him on Sunday though.

The Andalusians have won their opening two games of the campaign and morale seems to be high in their squad following the Europa League success last season. Julen Lopetegui will want to see his team keep in touch with the LaLiga heavyweights this term as such; winning on Sunday would be an excellent start.

Best shows on Peacock’s Premier League TV channel

Along with providing access to many live Premier League matches, Peacock also streams the Premier League TV channel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The channel provides a plethora of different programs dedicated to all things Premier League. Shows range from talk, analysis, interview, documentary, fantasy, and more. Trying to select the top 5 best shows on Peacock’s Premier League TV channel isn’t an easy task since many of them are so good, but here’s my perspective.

While there is plenty of solid programming on the channel, these five are my personal favorites.

5. Fantasy Premier League

Nearly seven million fans play fantasy Premier League on the official website. This show is practically a must-watch for fantasy owners. Airing on Thursdays at 2PM (ET), the hour long show recaps previous matches in the fantasy world, previews the week ahead, and debates player values looking forward.

As a fantasy owner, deciding between two specific players can be the toughest decision; however, the expert panel also analyzes certain players head-to-head to help you make the best decisions with your team.

4. The Big Interview

Also streamed on Thursdays (9:30AM ET), this show is fairly self-explanatory. The host interviews a certain Premier League star for 30 minutes each week. While an interview show may not exactly be groundbreaking, The Big Interview is not just your average question and answer show.

Southampton’s Danny Ings was the special guest this time around and viewers found out some interesting things about the striker’s career. Ings revealed that he previously went on trial at Chelsea and was even told as a youngster that he was too small to make it. Not surfaced nor gimmicky, The Big Interview asks interesting questions to some of the best players in the league.

3. The Kelly & Wrighty Show

Yet another Thursday program (8AM ET), this show features hosts Kelly Cates and Arsenal legend Ian Wright. Set in studio, Kelly and Ian bring in special guests each week to discuss the Premier League’s biggest news stories.

What makes this particular show so enjoyable, besides the duo’s great personalities, is the fact that they and their guests have thoughtful discussions without the screaming or yelling. The Kelly & Wrighty Show is also perfect to have on at work (if possible) or while getting ready for your day.

2. The Analysis Show

Tuesdays at 8AM (ET), this show breaks down the biggest moments of the previous matchweek with in-depth analysis. A 90-minute program, The Analysis Show features Tim Sherwood and Leroy Rosenior. Sherwood, a former Spurs manager, intensely breaks down tactics, positioning, and particular moments (big and small) during important matches from the weekend.

The Analysis Show also mixes in fan questions and video clip analysis performed by Leroy Rosenior (probably my favorite personality on the network). Although the hosts do tend to talk over each other at times, it is an extremely interesting watch for people that enjoy discussing x’s and o’s.

1. Premier League 100

Sandwiched between programs on Wednesday mornings at 9:30AM (ET), Premier League 100 is a 30-minute documentary series profiling the most prolific goalscorers in Premier League history. Beautifully done, these short docs tell the story of these players from the start of their careers to the height of their popularity.

The Robin van Persie episode was particularly interesting. The former Arsenal and Manchester United forward recalls practicing that volley versus Charlton from 2006 with friends in his home pool, as well as his decision to leave the Gunners for United. Premier League 100 is also a fantastic way for youngsters to learn about the former greats of the game.
