Kewell named latest Oldham boss

London (AFP) – Former Australian international Harry Kewell has called for stability at Oldham after becoming the sixth manager at the League Two club in two years.

Kewell, who starred for Leeds and Liverpool in the Premier League as a player, takes over at Boundary Park after spells in charge of Crawley and Notts County in League Two.

The 41-year-old replaced Dino Maamria, who was sacked on Friday after finishing 19th in the curtailed 2019/20 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kewell follows in the footsteps of another former Premier League star, Paul Scholes, who lasted just 31 days as Oldham boss last year.

“I’m excited about the project and, don’t get me wrong, it’s going to take time,” Kewell told the Oldham club website.

“Because the one thing I think this club does need is stability and if we can get that, then we can start to grow things.

“We’ve got to get back to the basics and we’re having a ‘clean slate’ here now and I think the fans, myself, the owner, everybody wants to start seeing this club progress because we all believe that’s there’s a big potential.”

Rangers get off to winning start at Aberdeen

Glasgow (AFP) – Rangers got their quest to deny Celtic a record-breaking 10th consecutive Scottish Premiership title off to a winning start as Ryan Kent’s cool finish earned a 1-0 victory at Aberdeen for Steven Gerrard’s men.

In the first Scottish Premiership game for 147 days after the 2019/20 season was ended early due to the coronavirus pandemic, both sides struggled to adapt to their new surroundings with no fans at Pittodrie for a traditionally intense fixture on and off the field.

Rangers controlled the game throughout and one goal was enough for a vital three points with Gerrard under pressure to end Celtic’s dominance in his third season in charge.

Alfredo Morelos has been linked with a big money move to Lille over the past week, but Rangers insist the French side have not come close to matching their valuation of the Colombian, who played his part in the winner.

Morelos picked out the run of Kent, who timed his run perfectly and slotted past Joe Lewis into the far corner on 21 minutes.

Despite the visitors’ dominance of possession, neither side had many chances to add to the scoring.

Aberdeen were without their two first-choice strikers in Sam Cosgrove and Curtis Main and it showed as the Dons failed to register a shot on target.

A wild lunge from Andrew Considine on Scott Arfield gave Aberdeen even more of a mountain to climb four minutes from time as the defender was shown a straight red card.

And only a brilliant block from Ash Taylor denied Joe Aribo adding a second for Rangers in stoppage time.

Juve rest Ronaldo for Serie A finale as Champions League looms

Milan (AFP) – Cristiano Ronaldo will be rested for Juventus’ final match of the Serie A season on Saturday against Roma, ahead of the Italians’ Champions League last-16 second leg against Lyon next week.

Ronaldo, 35, was left out of the squad for the game in Turin, with fellow forward Paulo Dybala also absent with a thigh injury.

Juventus have already wrapped up their ninth straight league title and are now looking towards their home game against Lyon on Friday when Maurizio Sarri’s side need to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit.

Nothing is left to play for against Roma who are already assured of a fifth-place finish and the Europa League group stage next term.

Ronaldo, however, will miss out on winning a first ‘Capocannoniere’ award for top scorer in the Italian top flight.

The Portuguese forward has scored 31 league goals this campaign with Lazio’s Ciro Immobile now assured of the top-scorer’s award with 35.

Immobile needs just one more goal against Napoli on Saturday to equal the scoring record of 36 goals for a single campaign achieved by Gonzalo Higuain, playing for Napoli, in the 2015-16 season.

PSG look forward to Champions League challenge after cup final wins

Paris (AFP) – Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Ander Herrera is confident the French side will be in prime condition for their Champions League quarter-final against Atalanta despite Friday’s League Cup final win against Lyon being just their second competitive outing in almost five months.

PSG beat Lyon 6-5 on penalties after an interminable final ended 0-0 after extra time at the Stade de France, where 3,500 spectators were allowed in as part of the loosening of the country’s coronavirus restrictions.

Their victory, in what was the last ever final of an unloved competition that has now been scrapped, came a week after Thomas Tuchel’s team defeated Saint-Etienne 1-0 to win the French Cup.

They had previously been awarded the Ligue 1 title by virtue of being top when the season was ended in April with 10 rounds of matches unplayed because of the health crisis.

“It has been a fantastic week for us, winning two trophies. It is not easy to do and we are very pleased,” said former Manchester United midfielder Herrera.

“Lots of players have played their part in this success and we feel we are ready for the Champions League after the work we have done in the last four weeks.”

However, having just those two cup finals as competitive outings since early March is hardly the best way to ready themselves for their first Champions League quarter-final in four years.

That match will be played on August 12 as a one-off tie behind closed doors in Lisbon.

PSG have also had a handful of friendly matches, but Atalanta may be in better shape having resumed their Serie A campaign in June. They only finish the season this weekend.

Herrera’s team, meanwhile, looked sluggish for much of Friday’s final, although the suffocating heat was partly responsible.

– ‘Optimistic’ for Mbappe –

They missed Kylian Mbappe, who was crocked in the French Cup final a week earlier, suffering an ankle injury that could rule him out against Atalanta.

In his absence, Mauro Icardi was poor through the middle of the Paris attack and they only claimed victory thanks to Pablo Sarabia’s sudden-death penalty in the shoot-out.

“We are optimistic for Kylian. We saw that he can walk now, he is young and he is a real professional,” said Herrera.

“He really wants to play (against Atalanta) and is working every day, morning and night.

“Of course his presence is important and we hope he will play.”

Mbappe is not the only worry — defensive duo Marquinhos and Thiago Silva came off with cramp, while full-back Layvin Kurzawa hobbled off in the second half.

In any case, PSG claimed their fourth domestic treble in six years, underlining the extent of their domination of French football under Qatari ownership.

Lyon used to be top dogs but this defeat saw their silverware drought go on. They have not won a trophy since the French Cup in 2012, a year after the Qataris arrived and changed the footballing landscape in the country.

Rudi Garcia’s team, who had Brazilian defender Rafael sent off late in extra time, were a disappointing seventh when the league season was curtailed and will miss out on European football next season for the first time in 24 years.

Unless, that is, they can go on and win the Champions League in Lisbon on August 23.

OL visit Juventus next Friday in their long-delayed last 16 second leg, defending a 1-0 lead from the first leg.

“We will need to do better to score in Turin but this is a good base for us to work on,” insisted Garcia.

“It is important that we keep our heads up and keep in mind the things we did well in order to go on and qualify for the Champions League quarter-finals.”

If they do see off Juventus, they will face Manchester City or Real Madrid in the last eight.

Lille sign veteran Turkish striker Yilmaz

Lille (France) (AFP) – Lille have signed Turkish striker Burak Yilmaz from Besiktas on a free transfer, one day after selling Victor Osimhen to Napoli, the Ligue 1 club announced on Saturday.

The 35-year-old Yilmaz has spent most of his career in Turkey and is one of a select few to have played for Fenerbahce, Besiktas and Galatasaray.

“The experienced and prolific striker and Turkish football idol has signed a two-season contract with the Lille club,” Lille said in a statement.

Yilmaz has scored 24 goals in 59 international matches for Turkey and netted 13 times in 25 league games for Besiktas last season.

Lille sold Nigerian forward Osimhen to Napoli on Friday for a fee which could rise to 80 million euros ($94.6 million), while former France striker Loic Remy also left the club at the end of his contract.

Spot-on Nani fires Orlando into MLS restart semis

Orlando (AFP) – Former Manchester United star Nani scored the winning spot-kick as Orlando upset Los Angeles FC in a penalty shoot-out to reach the semi-finals of the Major League Soccer restart tournament on Friday.

Portuguese international Nani, who had seen a penalty saved in normal time before the game finished in a 1-1 draw, made no mistake in the shoot-out with his side’s fifth and final spot-kick.

The 33-year-old sent Los Angeles goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer the wrong way before wheeling away to be mobbed by jubilant Orlando team-mates at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney World, Florida.

Nani had been given the chance to seal victory in a tense shoot-out which saw Los Angeles surrender the initiative when veteran defender Jordan Harvey crashed his penalty against the crossbar.

Earlier, Los Angeles had appeared to be heading for a place in the last four after Bradley Wright-Phillips scored from close range in the 64th minute to put the favourites 1-0 up.

That goal came just moments after Vermeer had denied Nani from the penalty spot after Diego Palacios’s clumsy foul on Orlando right back Ruan.

But as the game wore on in energy-sapping heat and humidity, Los Angeles were left clinging on as Orlando pressed for an equaliser.

It arrived in the 90th minute when Nani’s corner from the right hand side was met by left back Joao Moutinho, who lost his marker to thump home a header.

Orlando will now face either San Jose Earthquakes or Minnesota in the last four, who play in their quarter-final on Saturday.

But it was a disappointing early exit for Los Angeles, who had looked to be on course for their first silverware after a rousing 4-1 victory over MLS Cup champions Seattle in the last 16.

The “MLS is Back” restart tournament is taking place at Disney World in Orlando after a four-month coronavirus shutdown which halted the regular season in March.
