It was another disappointing weekend for MLS yet again on television with Univision delivering their three least-watched MLS broadcasts of the season so far. Friday saw a double-header on UniMás featuring two of the leagues more popular clubs in Los Angeles Galaxy and Atlanta United with both matches failing to draw more than 200,000 viewers — averaging just 183,500 between them. Saturday afternoon saw just 214,000 viewers tune in to watch Chicago Fire take on New York City FC on Univision’s flagship over-the-air network. A FIFA U-20 World Cup match between Argentina and South Africa kicked off on Telemundo just one hour before Univision’s broadcast drawing a larger audience of 228,000.
The FIFA Under 20 World Cup began last week with Spanish language coverage averaging 165,125 viewers for the opening round of fixtures on Telemundo and Universo. Viewership peaked at noon on Sunday as Senegal defeated Colombia 2-0 in front of an American television audience of 404,000 viewers. The United States opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Ukraine watched by 154,000 people on FOX Sports 1 with an additional 67,000 on Universo. Telemundo’s four matches broadcast over the air last weekend averaged 284,500 viewers. Viewing numbers for FOX Sports were not available.
FOX’s fourth and final Bundesliga over-the-air broadcast of the season featured Bayern Munich defeating Eintracht Frankfurt to win their sixth consecutive Bundesliga title. The broadcast was watched by 413,000 viewers, bringing FOX over-the-air’s average Bundesliga audience for the 2018-19 season to 406,500.
