Tunisian club win African title after final abandoned over VAR

Johannesburg (AFP) – Esperance won the CAF Champions League in Tunisia Saturday after Wydad Casablanca refused to continue playing on 60 minutes because VAR was unavailable to judge a disputed equaliser.

The Tunisian were leading 1-0 in the final second leg and 2-1 overall when play was halted, and after a 90-minute delay the referee awarded the match to the home side.

Tunisian media reported that officials were aware before the match that the VAR (video assistant referee) was not working.

It is the first time in the 55-year history of the elite African club competition that a match in the home-and-away final has not been completed.

Wydad believed they had levelled on 59 minutes when Walid el Karti headed a cross into the net. TV replays confirmed he was onside, but might have fouled an opponent.

The Moroccan team insisted that the Gambian referee check with VAR, seemingly unaware that the often controversial system was not available.

At one stage, CAF president Ahmad Ahmad and the bosses of Esperance and Wydad spoke on the side of the pitch without being able to get the match restarted.

The Wydad players and coaches eventually went to the changing room and, after a long delay, the referee indicated that Esperance had been awarded the match.

Esperance, seeking back-to-back titles, took the lead on 41 minutes when Youcef Belaili curled a shot into the net from the edge of the box at the Stade Olympique.

The Tunisian outfit dominated the opening half and fully deserved to lead at half-time in the 60,000-seat stadium.

VAR had played a major role in the first leg in Morocco last weekend, with referrals ruling out a goal by Wydad and later appeals for a penalty.

The Egyptian referee of that match was subsequently banned for six months with CAF saying he gave a “poor performance”.

Most-watched soccer games on US TV for May 15-26, 2019

It was another disappointing weekend for MLS yet again on television with Univision delivering their three least-watched MLS broadcasts of the season so far. Friday saw a double-header on UniMás featuring two of the leagues more popular clubs in Los Angeles Galaxy and Atlanta United with both matches failing to draw more than 200,000 viewers — averaging just 183,500 between them. Saturday afternoon saw just 214,000 viewers tune in to watch Chicago Fire take on New York City FC on Univision’s flagship over-the-air network. A FIFA U-20 World Cup match between Argentina and South Africa kicked off on Telemundo just one hour before Univision’s broadcast drawing a larger audience of 228,000.

The FIFA Under 20 World Cup began last week with Spanish language coverage averaging 165,125 viewers for the opening round of fixtures on Telemundo and Universo. Viewership peaked at noon on Sunday as Senegal defeated Colombia 2-0 in front of an American television audience of 404,000 viewers. The United States opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Ukraine watched by 154,000 people on FOX Sports 1 with an additional 67,000 on Universo. Telemundo’s four matches broadcast over the air last weekend averaged 284,500 viewers. Viewing numbers for FOX Sports were not available.

FOX’s fourth and final Bundesliga over-the-air broadcast of the season featured Bayern Munich defeating Eintracht Frankfurt to win their sixth consecutive Bundesliga title. The broadcast was watched by 413,000 viewers, bringing FOX over-the-air’s average Bundesliga audience for the 2018-19 season to 406,500.

Injury hit France edge past China in last warm up

Créteil (France) (AFP) – France eked out victory in their final warm up for the Women’s World Cup when they beat China 2-1 in Creteil in the Paris suburbs.

France won without several of their regular starters, including captain Amandine Henry, striker Eugenie Le Sommer and a third Lyon star Amel Majri.

France open their campaign against South Korea on June 7 and viewed China as presenting similar problems.

China kick off their campaign the next day against another European power, Germany.

France took the lead after 30 minutes when striker Valerie Gauvin found herself in the right place after a shot from Marion Torrent was blocked.

After that the home team created few chances as China presented a tougher test than Thailand, who France beat 3-0 in their previous match.

Defender Wang Shanshan levelled after 52 minute, set up by Paris Saint-Germain playmaker Wang Shuang

France’s best attacking player Kadidiatou Diani, a PSG left winger, rescued the home team with an unstoppable shot six minutes later.

“We responded well,” said French coach Corinne Diacre.

“It’s already better than last week,” she said. “And I hope it’s not as good as next week.”

Henry added to France’s injury problems earlier in the day.

“It was a surprise for me too, I must confess that I would have done without it this morning,” said Diacre. “She’s fine, she’s better, she just locked her back this morning when she woke up.

“Considering how she was walking, I think it would have been difficult for her to run tonight.”

Diacre went on to say that the injuries to Henry, Le Sommer and Majri suggest France could be paying for Lyon’s success in winning the Champions League.

“There are three Lyon women, long season. Women who have played in every competition. We would have done without it, but now we’re dealing with it.”

Liverpool’s Fabinho rewarded for keeping faith

Liverpool (AFP) – Brazil midfielder Fabinho has declared he never had any doubts he would be a success at Liverpool, despite his early struggles to make the starting line-up.

Fabinho is expected to feature on Saturday when Liverpool face Tottenham in the Champions League final in Madrid.

The 25-year-old has established himself as a key player for Jurgen Klopp’s side, but had to wait for his chance after arriving from Monaco last July.

Fabinho did not make a Premier League start until October 27 and he conceded it took him some time after that before he started to feel comfortable in English football.

He believes the turning point came with his second league start, a 1-1 draw at Arsenal on November 3.

Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka overshadowed the Brazilian, who looked off the pace in midfield as he strained to keep up with the flow of the game.

But Fabinho now says that was the match when he began to understand exactly what was required of him in the Premier League.

His confidence began to grow, leading to his first stand-out performance in a Liverpool shirt, when he created a goal for Sadio Mane in a 3-1 victory over Manchester United on December 16.

“I knew it would be difficult, and that there would be times that I would be out of the team, but in terms of adapting, there was a lot of preparation and a lot of hard work,” Fabinho said.

“There were two games in particular that stood out for me. There was the game against Arsenal, because that’s when I really understood the speed of the Premier League, and the attention to detail that’s required.

“In terms of building my confidence, the stand-out game was against Manchester United. It was probably one of the best games of the season.

“I managed to get an assist in that game and I really kept up with the rhythm and pace, and I felt we were much superior to Manchester United.”

Despite his initial difficulties, Fabinho never questioned his decision to join Liverpool.

– Intensity –

“No, for me, it was never in doubt that I’d made the right choice,” he said.

“Not every player transfers to a new club and gets straight into the team, as was my case, and everybody told me that’s how the coach works with new players; they’re not automatically thrown into the first team straight away.”

Klopp hoping to break curse in Champions League final as Spurs wait on Kane

Madrid (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp refused to accept that luck had anything to do with him losing six straight finals as he leads Liverpool into Saturday’s all-English Champions League decider against Tottenham Hotspur, who will make a late call on the fitness of Harry Kane.

Klopp has not come out on the winning side in a final since leading his brilliant Borussia Dortmund team to a German league and cup double in 2012. Since then there have been half a dozen disappointments, including the 2013 Champions League with Dortmund, the 2016 Europa League with Liverpool, and last season’s Champions League.

“If I was the reason for losing six finals in a row, then everybody needs to worry really,” Klopp joked as he spoke at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, where Saturday’s final will kick off at 1900 GMT in front of a huge contingent of travelling supporters from England.

Liverpool lost 3-1 to Real Madrid in Kiev a year ago. Klopp was also out of luck in this season’s Premier League, with his team losing just once and collecting 97 points, but still coming second to Manchester City.

However, their hopes of ending this season with a trophy are still alive after their stunning victory over Barcelona in the semi-finals, as they won 4-0 in the second leg to overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit.

“I am probably at the moment a world-record holder, in the last seven years at least, in winning semi-finals, but if I wrote a book about that probably nobody would buy it,” Klopp added.

“I’m a normal human being, and if I sat in a room and thought that it’s all about me, I am the reason, if I saw myself as a loser or whatever, then that would be a problem. But I don’t see it like this.”

While last year Liverpool were the underdogs against a Real side who would go on to claim a third straight Champions League, this time they are the favourites.

They beat Spurs twice in the Premier League this season and have lost just one of their last 14 meetings with the north London side.

Full-back Andy Robertson stated the determination of the Liverpool squad to win a first trophy for their German manager since he arrived in October 2015.

“Since he came here, he has changed how the club is and we obviously want to try to repay him with a trophy. Squads before came close and just fell short,” said the Scot.

Tottenham to make late call on Kane for Champions League final

Madrid (AFP) – Mauricio Pochettino will wait until the last minute to decide whether Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is fit enough to face Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday.

Kane has said he feels ready to start in Madrid, despite not playing since damaging ankle ligaments in the quarter-finals against Manchester City last month.

Asked in a press conference on Friday if Kane would play, Pochettino said: “I don’t know. We have one training session left and then we are ready to decide.”

If Pochettino picks Kane, it would deliver a significant boost to Spurs but they have survived without him, with Lucas Moura taking Spurs ot Madrid with an incredible second-leg hat-trick that knocked out Ajax in the semis.

“It is not going to be easy to take a decision tomorrow,” Pochettino said.

“We have all the information and we know every single detail. To try to win, you can only use 11 players, that is the most painful situation.

“I proposed a few weeks ago that the whole squad do a picture together before the game and I think UEFA have listened.

“We talk about the value of the game – many things have happened in England, a lot of problems, and tomorrow we have one billion people watching and we can show the value of football.

“I think tomorrow is about showing togetherness and it is a great chance to show the value of a collective sport.”

Tottenham have reached their first ever European Cup/Champions League final, while Liverpool are bidding to win the tournament for a sixth time after losing to Real Madrid in the final last year.

Women’s football reaching ‘tipping point’ as World Cup approaches

Paris (AFP) – As the 24 teams go through their final preparations for a Women’s World Cup featuring more heavyweight contenders than ever, many have one eye on an even greater prize than a winner’s medal.

The competition kicks off in Paris in a week’s time and after years of painstaking development and increasing media coverage, this is expected to the year the women’s game makes its definitive leap into the big time.

“I think there’s a bigger picture … this summer,” England manager Phil Neville said at the unveiling of his squad.

“I think this World Cup is a tipping point for the women’s game where I think it’s just going to go boom.”

The signs are encouraging on the field and off it.

Hosts France kick off the tournament on June 7 when they take on South Korea at the Parc des Princes in the capital, and ends on July 7 with the final at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, which holds just over 69,000.

However when France hosted the men’s World Cup and Euros, the finals were held at the 80,000-capacity Stade de France, and large proportion of the matches at this summer are taking place in stadiums with a capacity of 25,000 or less.

“We did not always choose big grounds because we didn’t want any empty stadiums,” Noel Le Graet, the president of the French Football Federation, told AFP.

“We got the women’s World Cup in 2015 … At the beginning, possible host cities were not exactly shoving each other out of the way to come forward.

“I was a bit scared about the Parc des Princes, but the opening match sold out in five minutes.”

– Out of the blue –

The demand for tickets has surprised the hosts.

“We didn’t see it coming,” said Erwan Le Prevost, head of the local organising committee.

Jean-Michel Aulas, the president of Lyon, who will host the semi-finals and final told AFP that “it was a gamble at the time that we bid for the games.”

Enthusiasm is running high for the eighth official Women’s World Cup in part because pool of competitive teams is deeper.

“We are in a virtuous circle with an audience that will come and watch,” said Jean-Michel Aulas, the president of Lyon, who will host the semi-finals and final.

The United States are the queens of the game after winning the World Cup three times and the Olympics four times, while Germany follow close behind with two World Cups and a whopping eight European Championships. Japan and Norway have both won the World Cup once.

Klopp confirms Firmino fitness for Champions League final

Madrid (AFP) – Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino is fit for Saturday’s Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur despite missing the end of the Premier League season, manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed on Friday.

“From his point of view, yes, he is ready,” Klopp said at a press conference in Madrid on Friday, just before his squad, with Firmino, trained on the pitch at the Metropolitano Stadium.

However, Klopp refused to say whether Firmino — who has been struggling with a groin problem — would start, joking that he would only do so if Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed his line-up.

“If Poch afterwards says the exact line-up then call me, then you will know. If not, I thought I’d keep at least a few question marks open.”

Klopp added: “He is fit, he has trained, you will see him later, he is here, and if nothing happens from the moment when he left the plane to now, then he should be fine.”

The Brazilian did not feature in Liverpool’s last three matches and before that only came on as a late substitute in their 3-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of the semi-final.

Five key battles to decide Champions League final

Madrid (AFP) – Tottenham and Liverpool play for the biggest prize in club football on Saturday as the two Premier League teams go head-to-head in the Champions League final.

Liverpool are aiming to win their sixth European Cup in Madrid while a surprise victory for Spurs would earn them their first.

Here, AFP Sport looks at five key battles that could decide the contest.

Pochettino v Klopp

Mauricio Pochettino has said he expects this match to be a battle of emotions, not tactics, but his duel with Jurgen Klopp could go a long way to settling the final.

For Pochettino, the big call will be around Harry Kane, who could be fit enough to start but will he be sharp enough to merit the risk?

Klopp’s biggest selection dilemma is in midfield, where he has to pick three from Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and Fabinho.

His choice could offer a clue as to Liverpool’s approach, whether they want a fast, open game, the kind they usually favour. It is the kind Tottenham, with their speed in attack, might be happy with too.

Salah v Rose

Mohamed Salah played only 30 minutes of last year’s final, forced off after a collision with Sergio Ramos, and the Egyptian will surely be eager to make up for lost time.

Even if his season has not had the explosiveness of last, Salah remains Liverpool’s deadliest threat and how Danny Rose handles him will be key to Tottenham’s hopes.

Rose was outstanding during Tottenham’s quarter-final triumph over Ajax, showing the kind of form that once made him one of the finest full-backs in Europe. A repeat this weekend would give Spurs a good chance.

Eriksen v Wijnaldum

Georginio Wijnaldum was the star of Liverpool’s incredible comeback against Barcelona in the semi-finals and Klopp is likely to rely on him again in Madrid.

Wijnaldum’s versatility has been invaluable to Klopp, who will hope the Dutchman can use his athleticism and power to set the tempo in midfield.

For Tottenham, Christian Eriksen will be looking to run the game too, but more quietly, the Dane’s craft and vision will be essential if Spurs want to break down Liverpool’s stubborn defence.

If Eriksen is denied space to thread balls for the likes of Kane, Son and Dele Alli to find, Liverpool could be halfway there.

Liverpool v Expectation

It has been a long time since Liverpool last went into a European final as favourites and much could depend on how they handle the pressure.

Bayern CEO Rummenigge against Champions League reform

Berlin (AFP) – Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has slammed recent proposals to radically reform the UEFA Champions League that would greatly reduce the number of teams qualifying from domestic competitions.

In an interview with German news magazine Der Spiegel, Rummenigge expressed his bemusement at changes pushed by Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli, the president of the European Club Association (ECA), for a “pan-European league system”.

“Why do we have to change anything at all about the competition?” asked Rummenigge in the interview, which will be published on Saturday.

“The Champions League is already the best competition in the world, and the most difficult to win.”

Agnelli’s concept envisioned a complete restructuring of all UEFA competitions from 2024, with internal relegation and promotion in a three-tiered system.

It also mooted the idea of playing matches at the weekend rather than in midweek, and proposed a new group stage format which would see four groups of eight teams rather than the current eight groups of four.

Rummenigge, himself a former ECA president, said that he was “no friend” of either weekend fixtures or an expanded group stage.

“The most important thing is that there are no weekend games, because this would create a big fight with the European leagues,” he said.

He denied the magazine’s claims that he had previously supported the idea of weekend fixtures in a leaked e-mail to Agnelli.

“I did not have a road to Damascus moment about this,” he said.

He added that he expected “intense” discussions at next week’s ECA shareholders’ meeting, and urged European football’s governing body UEFA to be “sensitive” in their decision-making.

UEFA are in consultations about the proposals, though president Aleksander Ceferin has ruled out the introduction of weekend fixtures.

‘World record holder at winning semi-finals’ – Klopp laughs off ‘unlucky’ tag

Madrid (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp laughed off suggestions he is an unlucky manager as he looks to halt an unfortunate run of ending up on the losing side in his last six finals as a coach when he leads Liverpool into Saturday’s Champions League decider.

“Since 2012, apart from 2017, I was every year with my team in a final, so we are getting there sometimes with luck in some moments, but most of the time because we had to go there,” Klopp told reporters at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, where Liverpool will face Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

“I am probably at the moment a world-record holder, in the last seven years at least, in winning semi-finals, but if I wrote a book about that probably nobody would buy it.”

This is the seventh final Klopp has taken a team to since leading his brilliant Borussia Dortmund side to a German league and cup double in 2012.

He lost the 2013 Champions League final with Dortmund and the German Cup final in each of the following two campaigns.

Klopp then lost the Europa League and League Cup finals in his first season with Liverpool, before being defeated in the 2018 Champions League final by Real Madrid.

Liverpool also finished second to Manchester City in this season’s Premier League despite losing just one game and amassing 97 points. But the German insists it cannot all be about him.

“I’m a normal human being, and if I would now sit in a room and think it’s all about me, I am the reason, if I would see myself as a loser or whatever, then that would be a problem. But I don’t see it like this.”

Klopp, 51, added: “The things that happened in the past, for me I still got confidence I can take out of that, and could always, so it’s all good.

“Now I understand luck — if you work for it, you have it from time to time, not always… but apart from that, no, it was not an unlucky career and it’s not over, I have still a few years!”

Women’s World Cup: Profiles of Groups A, B and C

Paris (AFP) – The pressure is on France as they kick off the Women’s World Cup against South Korea on June 7, but while the Koreans, Norwegians and Nigerians are all potentially tricky opponents for the hosts, the format of the group stage leaves them some room to manoeuvre.

The first round will eliminate just eight teams of the 24 teams, with the top two finishers in each of the six groups advancing along with four best third-place teams.

Here AFP, looks at the contenders in groups A, B and C:

Group A

France (World Ranking: Number 4), Norway (No. 12), South Korea (No. 14), Nigeria (No. 38)

Hosts France start as one of the tournament favourites, as the backbone of the starting XI play for Lyon, the dominant team in European club football. Sarah Bouhaddi is described by team-mates as “the best goalkeeper in the world”, central defender Wendie Renard captains Lyon while defensive midfielder Amandine Henri captains France. Striker Eugenie Le Sommer has scored 74 goals for the national team.

Further improving their chances is the absence of their star team-mate Ada Hegerberg, who is boycotting a Norway team that should still have enough to advance from the group.

South Korea took the fifth and last Asian World Cup berth in a playoff, but they qualified without conceding a goal.

Nigeria meanwhile are the only African team to have ever made it as far as the quarter-finals, back in 1999, and coach Thomas Dennerby has set that as a target.

“I hope we can get to the quarter-finals and from there anything can happen,” the Swede said.

Key match: France v Norway. The noveau riche French face one of the women’s games old aristocrats.

Group B

Germany (No.2), Spain (No. 13), China (No. 16), South Africa (No. 49)

Germany remain number 2 in the world and are unbeaten since losing to France in last year’s SheBelieves Cup. They will be tough to beat and coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg is aware of what a good chance this is for her team.

“I am convinced that with this team, we are well set for the World Cup,” said the confident coach.

Barcelona may have been thrashed by Lyon in the Champions League final, but they were the first Spanish club to get that far and their improvement coincides with Spain’s rise in the FIFA rankings. Moreover, they do not have a single player over the age of 29.

Despite president Xi Jinping’s declared dream that China will win the World Cup, the women’s team have slipped back from 1999 when Sun Wen led the Steel Roses to the final with 10 goals and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Celtic formally confirm Lennon as boss

Glasgow (AFP) – Neil Lennon was on Friday officially confirmed as manager of Celtic a week after he guide the Scottish Premiership club to a historic third consecutive domestic treble.

Celtic said in a statement that they have appointed Lennon on a rolling 12-month contract as reward for his success after taking charge of the club for a second time on an interim basis after Brendan Rodgers quit to join Leicester in February.

“It is a massive honour to be named Celtic manager once again,” said Lennon.

“I had always dreamed of returning to this role on a permanent basis and I am absolutely delighted to once again be part of one of the biggest and best clubs in the world.

“I was delighted with the way the players stuck to their task and delivered another historic success, which is unlikely to ever be repeated.”

The former Northern Ireland international guided Celtic to their eighth successive Premiership title before beating Hearts in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final after Rodgers — architect of the previous two trebles — bagged the League Cup in December.

Parkhead chief executive Peter Lawwell revealed the Northern Irishman had been offered the permanent manager’s job immediately after beating Hearts.

Lennon previously managed Celtic between 2010 and 2014, winning the first three league titles on their current run of dominance.

Women’s World Cup: Profiles of Groups D, E and F

Paris (AFP) – The United States have dominated women’s football for two decades, and although the team arrives in France at war with their national federation, there is little doubt they are favourites.

The draw has handed the Americans a favourable group and the format gives strong teams time to find their feet.

The first round, with six four-team groups, will eliminate just eight teams.

The top two finishers in each group will advance along with four best third-place teams.

In the second part of our group-by-group analysis AFP looks at the contenders in groups D, E and F.

Group D

England (No. 3), Argentina (No. 37), Scotland (No. 20), Japan (No. 7)

England were semifinalists in Canada four years ago and in the Euros in 2017. That tournament was followed by the removal of coach Mark Sampson for “inappropriate and unacceptable” conduct but his successor, Phil Neville has maintained the momentum.

Despite winning 59 caps for England, Neville never played in a World Cup but he is confident his squad can do well and exploit the goodwill at home.

“We have nothing to fear,” Neville said. “The crowd and media are behind us, we are going into a major tournament as the best-prepared team.”

Japan followed an unexpected victory in 2011 with Olympic silver in 2014 and a runners-up spot in the 2015 World Cup, when they eliminated England in the semis.

A golden generation may have been replaced by a host of players promoted from the under-23s with an eye on the Tokyo Olympic tournament next year, but past results suggest the Japanese are over-achievers.

The Scots have qualified for the first time.

“You can’t just go to a World Cup and say you’re just there to enjoy it,” coach Shelley Kerr told the BBC. “Our priority is getting out of the group stage.”

The 37-year-old midfielder Mariela Coronel, who played in 2003 but missed Argentina’s disastrous 2007 appearance, can set a record for the longest gap between World Cups.

Key match: England v Scotland. England may want revenge against Japan but Scotland are their oldest footballing enemy and the match on the Riviera is guaranteed a big TV audience in the UK.

Group E

Canada (No. 5), New Zealand (No. 19), Cameroon (No. 46), Netherlands (No. 8)

Canada have been to the last six World Cups without ever making the last four.

Christine Sinclair has 282 caps, more than the entire Jamaican squad. She also has 180 international goals, second only to former US star Abby Wambach, and the 35-year-old Sinclair is Canada’s penalty taker.

Inter turn to Conte to restore past glories

Milan (AFP) – Inter Milan on Friday announced the appointment of former Chelsea and Italy boss Antonio Conte as coach with the ambition of moving the club out of Juventus’ shadow.

The 49-year-old has signed a three-year contract worth nine million euros ($10 million) plus bonuses with the Chinese-owned club, according to press reports.

Conte was dismissed by Chelsea after a combustible end to the 2017-2018 season when he appeared to lose the players’ trust despite winning the Premier League title the season before.

He replaces Luciano Spalletti who guided Inter into a Champions League berth for a second consecutive year on the final day of the Serie A season last Sunday.

With the 18-time Serie A champions searching for a first trophy since the Coppa Italia in 2011, Conte boasts a powerful pedigree.

He won the first three of Juventus’ eight consecutive Serie A titles and the Premier League and FA Cup as Chelsea boss.

But during his stay at Chelsea, stories leaked of a difficult relationship with the club’s hierarchy.

“A new chapter is opening in my life,” Conte said. “I can’t wait. I have chosen Inter because of the club it is, for its plans and ambition.”

Inter chairman Steve Zhang added: “I am sure Antonio Conte is one of the best coaches.

“I am sure he will help us to reach our target … to make this club one of the best in the world again.”

Conte had also been linked with a return to Juventus, after his successor in Turin Massimiliano Allegri announced he was leaving the club.

Maurizio Sarri, the Italian who this week won the Europa League with Chelsea, is now hotly tipped for the Juventus hotseat.

Spalletti took over at Inter in mid-2017 having previously coached Zenit Saint Petersburg and Roma.

But it proved a season of highs and lows with the club eliminated at the group stage of the Champions League in which they were drawn with Barcelona and eventual finalists Tottenham.

They then fell in the last 16 of the Europa League.

Inter snatched fourth place in Serie A, equal on points with Atalanta, but behind the side from Bergamo on head-to-head difference, to edge city rivals AC Milan by just one point in the race for a Champions League place for next season.

Inter announced Spalletti’s departure on Thursday with Zhang paying tribute to the 60-year-old who paid for failing to lift any silverware.

Charisma, camaraderie, control — how Pochettino saved Espanyol

Madrid (AFP) – Mauricio Pochettino saw the ice-cream from a distance and went ballistic.

Espanyol’s players were at the airport about to go on a pre-season tour, when young defender Javi Chica was given an ice-cream by one of the coaches. He will still not say which one.

“Pochettino saw me and marched over,” Chica told AFP. “He said, ‘hey, do you know how many hours you have to run to burn off an ice-cream? Who gave it to you?’

“I told him, ‘if you have to punish me, punish me, but I won’t say’. He made me go to his room again later to try to get it out of me.”

Pochettino had taken charge of Espanyol in January 2009, returning to the club for a third time after two separate stints as a player.

The second had been to save the club from relegation and now he was back, to do it again as coach.

“We had just lost 4-0 (to Malaga) and we went to the house of the president Daniel Sanchez Llibre,” says Joan Collet, who was on the Espanyol board at the time.

“We said we wouldn’t leave until he sacked the coach and started talking about Pochettino.”

Not everyone was convinced. Pochettino had been a prominent player for Espanyol but his coaching experience amounted to studying Marcelo Bielsa’s sessions with Chile and a brief spell in charge of the Espanyol women’s team.

“I remember thinking, ‘oof, this guy has hardly any experience’,” said Chica. “He knew a lot of the staff, some of the players were his friends, it just seemed like it might be difficult. We were apprehensive.”

– Charisma –

They were in trouble too, 18th in La Liga, with three wins from 19 games and five points adrift of safety.

A 0-0 draw with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in Pochettino’s first game proved a false dawn as Espanyol sank to the bottom of the table in March after a 1-0 loss to Osasuna.

“I drove through Barcelona and cried,” after that defeat, said Collet. “We received threats, all sorts. We thought we were down.”

Instead, an astonishing revival, including eight wins and a draw from their last 10 games, kept Espanyol up and launched Pochettino’s coaching career.

“It was incredible,” said Collet. “I have never seen anything like it.”

As a player, Espanyol had found in 1994 – and then re-signed a decade later – a natural leader in Pochettino, as well as a feisty centre-back.

Germany coach Loew taken to hospital after accident

Berlin (AFP) – Germany coach Joachim Loew has been taken to hospital after suffering an injury while exercising, and will miss upcoming games against Belarus and Estonia, the German Football Association (DFB) said Friday.

In a statement, the association  confirmed that Loew was receiving treatment for a crushed artery and would not be in the dugout for the upcoming internationals.

Bild newspaper reported that Loew had checked into the university clinic in Freiburg with circulatory problems after dropping a dumbbell on himself several weeks ago, but said that he had not undergone an operation.

“I feel better, but I just have to look after myself for a few weeks,” said Loew in a statement.

The DFB confirmed that assistant coach Marcus Sorg would take over managerial duties in the European Championship qualifiers against Belarus and Estonia on June 8 and June 11.

Inter Milan name Antonio Conte as coach

Milan (AFP) – Inter Milan on Friday announced the appointment of former Italy manager Antonio Conte as coach with the ambition of returning to the top of world football.

“A new chapter is opening in my life,” Conte said. “I can’t wait. I have chosen Inter because of the club it is, for its plans and ambition.”

“I am sure he will help us to reach our target … to make this club one of the best in the world again.”

Tottenham and Liverpool chase biggest win of all to drop loser tag for good

Madrid (AFP) – Among the rewards for the Champions League winners on Saturday will be silverware, status and history but the greatest prize awaiting Liverpool or Tottenham might be an end to the agonising wait.

Combined, it has been 18 years – seven for Liverpool, 11 for Tottenham – since either lifted a trophy, despite huge strides made in recent years under the much-praised Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino.

Klopp and Pochettino have been singled-out as two of Europe’s best coaches after crafting teams that reflect their personalities — Liverpool thrilling and fearless, Spurs brave and unrelenting.

And while scepticism has greeted the perfection of Manchester City’s star-studded squad in England, approval has also followed Liverpool and Tottenham’s nurturing of youngsters.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Winks came through the clubs’ youth systems while Andrew Robertson, Dele Alli and Kieran Trippier joined aged 24 or younger. All of them could start at the Wanda Metropolitano.

But any admiration still comes with an asterisk. Liverpool’s last trophy was in 2012, a League Cup that remains their only success since they won the FA Cup in 2006.

And Tottenham’s barren spell goes further back to the League Cup in 2008, which was their first trophy since winning the same competition in 1999.

Pochettino has tended to bristle at suggestions his team have a habit for coming close but failing to get over the line.

When asked in January if the club needed a trophy, he said: “I don’t agree with that, it’s good for the ego. But in reality the most important thing is to build a team that is always going to be in the top four.”

The expectations are higher at Liverpool, where Klopp’s vow to win something within four years of taking charge reaches its end-point this weekend.

“It didn’t happen yet,” said Klopp in April. “How long it will take I have no clue.”

Klopp’s also denied a personal need for silverware after having lost six cup finals in a row as coach, three of them with Liverpool.

“I don’t think that way at all,” he said earlier this month. “In football if you want to win you have to accept that there are occasions when you also might lose.”

– Falling short –

The pressure on Liverpool may be more intense, not just because of their success-laden past but because of a craving for satisfaction after a season in which they amassed 96 points in the Premier League but still fell just short of champions City.

Origi and Wanyama put Kenya on Champions League map

Nairobi (AFP) – Liverpool striker Divock Origi and Tottenham Hotspur’s Victor Wanyama are the talk of Kenya ahead of Saturday’s European Champions League final in Madrid.

In football-mad Kenya, a nation of 50 million in East Africa, there is hope the two athletes can shine a positive spotlight on it as fans relish the prospect of a key Kenyan role, even if Origi is Belgian born.

While Kenyan fans already have the feast of the Africa Cup on Nations to look forwards to in June the Champions League final is dividing opinion on the training ground at Nairobi club Ligi Ndogo.

“This is the first time two players of Kenyan origin will take part in a Champion’s League final,” says 28-year-old youth coach Kenneth Amolo.

“Wanyama and Origi will represent Kenya on the world stage, it’s great.”

Another youth coach taking a break from action, Lawrence Omondi, tells AFP he’ll be supporting Spurs.

“Wanyama is the captain of our national side, and he is our best player, so we have to back him.”

“We have to back the captain of the national side, right,” he insisted of Wanyama, a role-model who won his first Kenya full international cap at 15.

Wanyama is a solid central midfielder but is also the first Kenyan to score in the European Champions League back when he starred for Celtic, netting in an unforgettable win over Barcelona.

The stocky Wanyama has only started 13 Premier League games this season but has turned out six times so far in the Champions League and is highly thought of by the Spurs faithful.

Origi, for his part, has already made a huge Champions League impact at Anfield, scoring two goals in Liverpool’s sensational comeback against Barcelona in this year’s semi-final.

And while Origi, who transferred from Lille to Liverpool in 2014, plays for Belgium, he also enjoys huge support in Kenya as the son of a former Kenya football captain Mike Okoth.

His dad is famous for making the unusual transition from ‘keeper to striker in a lengthy career for Kenya.

“He was born and bred in Belgium, but he still has a link with Kenya,” says Austin Oduor, Origi’s uncle and himself a former Kenya international.

“He comes here regularly and he speaks good Swahili,” he added of the language that along with English is the nation’s official tongue.

The pair also represent different ethnic groups in a highly diverse nation.

Unai Emery deserves second season at Arsenal

Arsenal’s 2018/19 campaign came to a screeching halt on Wednesday, as they were firmly beaten 4-1 by Chelsea in the Europa League final. The loss means that the Gunners will spend their third consecutive season in the second-tiered European competition. Following the disappointing display in Baku, many Arsenal fans took to Twitter to debate whether or not head coach Unai Emery should keep his job with the north London club.

While finishing the season without silverware and missing out on the lucrative top four is certainly unsatisfying, there has been a slight improvement under Emery compared to the 2017/18 season. In the Spaniard’s freshman Premier League campaign with the club, the Gunners accumulated more wins and points, while finishing 11 points closer to fourth place compared to the previous season.

Arsenal also saw an improvement when taking a look at all competitions. Not only did they manage to advance further in the Europa League, but they also had a higher win percentage and averaged slightly more goals per game over the course of the season. In fact, Emery currently holds the record for highest win rate of any head coach/manager in the club’s illustrious history (more than 50 matches coached).

Emery also appears to have the support of his players. During a time in which friction between players and coaches appear to be widely reported, the Arsenal players have spoken highly of their head coach. Speaking to reporters ahead of the Europa League final, Sokratis

Papastathopoulos was full of praise of the former PSG coach. “[Emery is] the best coach I had in my career,” proclaimed the defender. “That’s because I have improved a lot under him. I play faster than one, two or three years ago.” Sokratis previously played under Jurgen Klopp while at Borussia Dortmund.

Alexandre Lacazette, the team’s Player of the Year, has also stated positive views on his head coach as well. “I play more with Unai and have more confidence with him,” the Frenchman told Evening Standard. “Even if I can just say ‘thank you’ to Wenger because he brought me into this big club, but I feel better with Unai.”

Ultimately, the Arsenal brass will determine whether or not Emery will be given another season as head coach. However, managing director Vinai Venkatesham and head of football Raul Sanllehi both sung Emery’s praises during an interview on the club’s official YouTube channel prior to Wednesday’s match. With one year remaining on Emery’s current contract, it appears that Venkatesham/Sanllehi will give him another shot at improving this team even further next season.

Liverpool’s Robertson feels no sense of entitlement

Liverpool (AFP) – Andy Robertson has warned his Liverpool team-mates their impressive form over the past nine months entitles them to nothing when it comes to trophies.

The 25-year-old Scottish left-back has urged Jurgen Klopp’s side to be ruthless when they face Tottenham Hotspur in Saturday’s Champions League final.

Liverpool won plenty of credit for the way in which they kept pace with Manchester City in this season’s Premier League title race, despite ultimately finishing a point adrift of the champions.

Yet Robertson is fully aware that Liverpool will finish without a trophy if they lose to Tottenham in Madrid.

He says it would be “stupid” for the club to fall into the trap of believing they deserve silverware just because they have played so well throughout the season.

“I’ve heard a few people say that, but we don’t deserve anything,” he said.

“At the end of the day, I think the Premier League shows that.

“We got 97 points and a lot of people would say that deserves the Premier League title, but it didn’t, because Manchester City got 98 and they were better than us. Not a lot better than us, but they were better than us.

“So we deserve nothing –- we only deserve what we put into the game, and we deserve what we get.

“But we’re not going into this game thinking that because we got 97 points, and we played well this season, we deserve it, because it would be stupid of us.”

– ‘Much bigger party’ –

Liverpool beat Spurs twice in the league, winning 2-1 at Wembley in September and then by the same score at Anfield in late March.

Robertson, though, has not forgotten the 4-1 defeat he and his team-mates suffered at Spurs in October 2017.

“We’ve been ruthless this season but it’s about being ruthless again; we need to take it into Saturday.

“You know, I’ve watched Tottenham over the past three or four years under Mauricio Pochettino and they are a ruthless team.

“The way they go about their business and the way they win games and the way they just destroy teams at times in the Premier League.

“They did it to us last season and if they perform like that, then we’ll be in for a hell of a game, because they’re a fantastic team with fantastic players.”

Robertson was part of the Liverpool side who lost last season’s Champions League final 3-1 to Real Madrid in Kiev.

Tudor rewarded for Udinese escape act with new deal

Milan (AFP) – Igor Tudor will remain as coach of Udinese next season after saving the club from relegation for a second consecutive year, the Serie A side said on Thursday.

The former Croatian international returned to Udinese in March, with the north-eastern side just a point above the relegation zone.

Tudor had already saved them from relegation in 2017-18 with two wins in their last four games, and repeated the feat with five wins in his 11 games back.

The 41-year-old, who was the club’s third coach this season, has signed a contract until the end of the 2019-2020 campaign.

Capped 55 times by Croatia, the former defender played over 100 times for Juventus between 1998 and 2007.

He has also coached Hajduk Split, PAOK and Galatasaray.

Udinese finished the season in 12th position, five points above the relegation zone.

Messi still driven to win with Argentina, insists Aguero

Buenos Aires (AFP) – Lionel Messi still “loves” the Argentine national team despite more than a decade of disappointments, international team-mate Sergio Aguero said on Thursday as the pair prepare for the Copa America in neighboring Brazil.

Despite trophy cupboards laden with club accolades, both Messi and Aguero have suffered much heartache with the Argentine national team.

Messi, Argentina’s all-time leading scorer, and Aguero were part of the Argentine squads that lost three major finals in successive years at the 2014 World Cup, 2015 Copa America and 2016 Centenario Copa America.

Messi was also a beaten finalist in the 2007 continental tournament.

The five time Ballon d’Or winner’s national team frustrations are well known and at 31 he is fast running out of opportunities to win a major international honor with his country.

He has already retired from international duty once before — albeit briefly — and took eight months off following Argentina’s World Cup last 16 exit just under a year ago.

“We all know the desire that Leo has when he comes here,” said Aguero from Argentina’s training base just outside Buenos Aires.

“The happiness he transmits is fundamental for us because we know very well how much he loves the national team.”

– Disappointment –

Despite winning Spain’s La Liga for the 10th time with Barcelona this season, it was a disappointing one for Messi even at club level.

He made no secret of his desire to win the Champions League this season, even admitting before the campaign began how much he wanted to bring that “beautiful cup back to Camp Nou.”

He’s won it four times with Barca but not since 2015, and in the last three seasons the Catalan giants have been eliminated after crushing away defeats — the last two of those despite taking a three-goal advantage into their second leg matches from the first leg at the Camp Nou.

At the weekend, Barca also lost 2-1 to Valencia in the Copa del Rey final.

“No-one likes to lose. Obviously he’s been disappointed in the last competitions after the Champions League and Copa del Rey” defeats, said Aguero.

“But he’s great, he’s experienced, he knows football is like this, that there is joy and in some moments there is sadness… He knows that better than anyone.”

The Argentine national team has been training at home this week ahead of a pre-Copa friendly against Nicaragua on June 7.

‘There will be upsets’ – Germany coach cautious after World Cup warm-up win

Berlin (AFP) – Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg warned that there will be some group stage upsets at the Women’s World Cup after her side eased to a 2-0 win over Chile in their final warm-up game on Thursday.

“Aside from USA, France and the Netherlands, teams like Australia, Canada, Sweden and Norway are also playing very well,” Voss-Tecklenburg told German broadcaster ARD.

“It will be a very tight tournament, and I think there will be some upsets in the group stage.”

Germany cruised to victory in front of a large crowd in Regensburg on Thursday, just days before they set off for France in search of a third World Cup title.

Voss-Tecklenburg had promised attacking football, and Germany delivered just that in the first half.

The reigning Olympic champions overran the Chileans and took the lead through captain Alexandra Popp on 29 minutes.

Full-back Carolin Simon doubled the lead with a peculiar goal on the stroke of half-time, her looping cross dropping in off the post at the far corner.

There was also good news for Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult, who made the starting eleven despite struggling with a shoulder injury in recent weeks.

“I felt good today, and I am happy that I could play 90 minutes,” said Schult, whose World Cup place had been in some doubt amid the concerns over her fitness.

Germany head to France for the World Cup on Monday, and play their opening game against China in Rennes on June 8.

Germany sparkle in final World Cup warm-up victory

Berlin (AFP) – A fortunate goal from Carolin Simon helped Germany cruise to a comfortable 2-0 win over Chile on Thursday in their final warm-up game before the Women’s World Cup.

Simon found the net with a mishit cross to crown an excellent performance in front of a large crowd in Regensburg.

Coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg had promised attacking football, and Germany delivered just that in the first half.

The two-time world champions overran the Chileans and took the lead through captain Alexandra Popp on 29 minutes.

Full-back Simon doubled the lead with her peculiar goal on the stroke of half-time, a looping cross dropping in off the post at the far corner.

There was also good news for Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult, who made the starting eleven despite struggling with a shoulder injury in recent weeks.

‘I will not run away’ – Boateng hits back at critics

Berlin (AFP) – Jerome Boateng has hit back at his critics and insisted that he will “not run away” from Bayern Munich amid speculation that he will leave the German champions ahead of next season.

“I won’t run away, situations can change quickly,” he said in an interview with Friday’s edition of Kicker magazine.

Boateng, 30, lost his place in the starting eleven under Niko Kovac this season, and has faced questions over his attitude and commitment.

The experienced centre-back, who was also dropped from the national team earlier this year, did not celebrate with his team mates as Bayern completed a league and cup double last weekend, prompting club president Uli Hoeness to say he should “find another club”.

Yet Boateng told Kicker that he could remain in Munich.

“I can imagine staying at Bayern,” he said.

“I am still fired up, and I am going to attack the new season.”

He admitted that he had not played well for Bayern in the autumn, but said he did not understand why coach Niko Kovac had decided to drop him.

Boateng faced criticism earlier this month for hosting a party on the evening of Bayern’s crucial title race clash with Borussia Dortmund, but he denied accusations that football had become a secondary concern.

The defender was on the verge of leaving Bayern last year, but a move to Paris Saint-Germain fell through at the last minute.

“I was already gone in my head. When you have a concrete offer, but then suddenly you are not allowed to go, then something inside you breaks,”  he told Kicker.

‘I want to retire at Real Madrid’ – Ramos

Madrid (AFP) – Sergio Ramos dismissed on Thursday speculation he could leave Real Madrid this summer by insisting he wants to retire at the club and has made up with president Florentino Perez.

Madrid captain Ramos called a press conference at Madrid’s training ground in Valdebebas to “end as soon as possible any rumours that have arisen”.

He continued: “I want to make my future clear, I’m a Madridista (Real Madrid fan), I want to retire here and what better way than to rebuild this team?

“The day I leave I’d like to say goodbye through the front door, by winning.”

Ramos and Perez had a heated argument in March following Madrid’s defeat by Ajax in the Champions League, and their relationship has been strained ever since.

Perez claimed in an interview with Spanish radio station Onda Cero on Monday that Ramos said he had an offer to move to China but the club were unable to afford the transfer. Perez said he replied Madrid would not allow their captain to leave for free.

“I have never wanted to go to China,” said Ramos, who added he and Perez held a meeting for “reconciliation” on Wednesday.

“I want to stay in the place I feel loved. Yesterday we fixed everything and we want to build the future of Madrid together.”

He added: “The president and I have a father-son relationship, we love each other very much. I do not want to leave, my dream is to retire here, in fact I would be willing to play for free here.

“Who has not argued with their father? But the best solution is to sit face-to-face talking, with nobody else interfering. It’s been a long time since I spoke about my contract or money with Florentino.”

Real Madrid are expected to complete a deal this summer for Eden Hazard, who said “I think it’s goodbye” after Chelsea beat Arsenal to win the Europa League on Wednesday.

“Hazard seems to me a world-class player,” Ramos said. “It would be very good for Real Madrid. I don’t know, but I hope he can come.”
