Valverde dreams of night to ‘remember’ in Copa del Rey

Barcelona (AFP) – Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde hopes the Copa del Rey holders can make Wednesday’s quarter-final second leg against Sevilla a night to “remember” as they attempt to erase a 2-0 deficit at the Camp Nou.

Barca’s four-year reign in the competition is under threat after goals by Pablo Sarabia and Wissam Ben Yedder last week gave Sevilla the upper hand in the tie while Lionel Messi was rested.

“We want to give our fans a good performance. We would be delighted to pull off a comeback. There are nights we remember with time and we would like this to be the case,” Valverde told a news conference on Tuesday.

“I encourage the fans to come to be able to experience this great moment, if we get through, and for them to help us. Sevilla took advantage of the support in the first leg and we want to make the most of it too.”

Barca are five points clear of Atletico Madrid in La Liga and face Lyon in the last 16 of the Champions League next month, but Valverde was rather philosophical about his team’s domestic cup outlook.

“Each time we don’t win… some people talk of failure and others allude to simple disappointment,” he said. “But whether we win or lose, in case of triumph or failure, the sun will rise the following morning and we will have a match on Saturday.”
