Sydney (AFP) – Keisuke Honda put in another man-of-the-match performance as Melbourne Victory thrashed Western Sydney Wanderers 4-0 in weekend A-League action, with the Japanese superstar saying they can get even better.
The former AC Milan striker opened the scoring on 11 minutes with a powerful header and was dominant in an attacking game to help push them up to second in the table, two points behind Perth Glory after six games.
After back-to-back defeats to open the campaign, Victory has now won four on the trot and are getting stronger by the week.
“I’m not satisfied yet, I think we can get better,” Honda told Fox Sports. “I scored and the team scored four goals but we also made a lot of mistakes.
“What I want to change about the team is we shouldn’t be satisfied even at 4-0.”
Perth Glory remain the frontrunners and are unbeaten under new boss Tony Popovic after a late goal from Diego Castro earned them a 1-1 draw away to the struggling Wellington Phoenix.
Sydney FC stayed in touch after condemning basement club Central Coast Mariners to a 2-1 home defeat.
It left them third on 11 points with Adelaide United, who beat Brisbane Roar 2-1 in a bad-tempered game in which Roar midfielder Stefan Mauk was briefly knocked out by his own red-card tackle.
Mauk was sent off for a studs-up challenge despite being left unconscious when his head hit the ground, leading to a fiery argument between the two team’s coaches.
“I was saying ‘You’re yelling at us, but our player is unconscious. I’m worried about him,” Roar coach John Aloisi said of his blow up with opposite number Marco Kurz.
“That was the thing that I discussed with (Kurz). He didn’t realise, it was explained after, and he apologised and we move on.”
Mauk came round after being helped off the pitch.
