Garcia extends contract as coach of Marseille

Marseille (AFP) – Marseille coach Rudi Garcia has extended his contract until 2021, the French giants announced on Saturday in a boost ahead of this weekend’s clash with great rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

“I am very proud and honoured to continue the adventure,” Garcia, who was appointed in October 2016, said at a press conference before Sunday’s game at the Velodrome.

Spanish sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has also extended his deal to 2021 at the club who are owned by the American tycoon Frank McCourt.

Garcia, 54, led Marseille to the final of last season’s Europa League, where they were beaten 3-0 by Atletico Madrid.

OM come into this weekend in fourth place in Ligue 1, already 11 points behind leaders PSG, who have won all 10 games so far, a French record.

PSG have not lost to their most bitter foes for seven years, and another victory on Sunday night would see them match Tottenham Hotspur’s record of 11 straight wins in the 1960-61 campaign, the best start to a season in any of Europe’s top five leagues.

“Over the course of the season nobody can beat them, but in one match everything is possible. Everyone sees us as being beaten already. We will believe from the first second to the last,” said Garcia, the former coach of Lille and Roma.

“We promise to give and do everything to get a positive result and stop PSG’s exceptional run. We don’t want them to join Tottenham in the history books, we will be ready.”
