Sabatini resigns as sports director of Inter owners Suning

Milan (AFP) – Walter Sabatini has resigned as technical coordinator of Suning Sports, the group that owns Italians Inter Milan and Chinese Super League (CSL) side Jiangsu, the group confirmed on Wednesday.

For Suning, the split with Sabatini follows the resignation this week of fellow Italian Fabio Capello as coach of the Chinese team.

Sabatini’s decision follows disagreements with Inter’s Chinese owners Suning, who paid 270 million euros ($335m) in June 2016 to take a 70 percent stake in the club.

“Apart from the fact that Inter are Inter, it would have been nice to build something consistent,” Sabatini told Sky Sports Italia.

Sabatini, 62, has accused the Suning group, bankrolled by Chinese businessman Zhang Jindong, of not investing enough in Inter, according to Italian media reports.

The club are currently fourth in Serie A — within the Champions League qualification places for next season.

“Suning Sports and Sabatini have reached an agreement for the early termination of his contract,” the Chinese group said.

“Sabatini will no longer occupy the role of Suning Group technical co-ordinator. The club wish him well in his next experience.”

Capello, 71, had been under contract with Jiangsu since June last year but reportedly fell out with club management over a number of issues, among them transfers.

Former Roma sporting director Sabatini was appointed technical co-ordinator for both Inter and Jiangsu Suning in May 2017.
