Elite sport in England exempt from fresh lockdown

London (AFP) – Elite sport will continue to be allowed behind closed doors despite a new month-long lockdown being imposed across England by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday.

The strict series of measures reintroduced to try and curb rising coronavirus infection rates will begin from Thursday, November 5 and last until December 2.

Pubs and restaurants will shut unless serving takeaway food, while all leisure and entertainment venues and non-essential shops will close.

However, Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden confirmed that elite sport will continue to enjoy an exemption to play behind closed doors.

“Travel to a place of work will be permitted,” he tweeted. “This includes (but not exhaustive) elite sport played behind closed doors.”

The 2019/20 Premier League season was suspended for three months between March and June during the first UK lockdown to bring the virus under control.

Rugby, tennis and horse racing are among the other sports that will benefit from high-profile events being allowed to continue behind closed doors.

The season-ending ATP Tour finals, which will feature the likes of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, are due to be played in London’s O2 from November 15-22.

“Following the British Prime Minister’s announcement, the ATP Finals will continue as planned behind closed doors,” said an ATP statement.

“We will continue to work with all the relevant authorities both at national and local level to ensure that all necessary measures are put in place to ensure the safety of all those involved in the tournament.”

Rugby’s Autumn Nations Cup will see the countries that normally compete in the Six Nations joined by Georgia and Fiji for a four-week tournament from November 13 that will replace the normal November internationals.

Mbappe on target as PSG win without injured Neymar

Paris (AFP) – Kylian Mbappe scored from the penalty spot as Paris Saint-Germain eased to their seventh straight Ligue 1 win on Saturday, beating Nantes 3-0 away to move provisionally three points clear at the top of the table.

All the goals came in the second half at the Stade de la Beaujoire, with Ander Herrera opening the scoring two minutes after the restart and Mbappe converting a 65th-minute spot-kick before Pablo Sarabia secured the points late on.

PSG have now taken maximum points since starting the season with back-to-back defeats and the reigning champions are three clear of Lille and Rennes at the summit.

Lille, who are unbeaten, can rejoin the club from the capital at the top if they win at home to Lyon on Sunday. Rennes beat Brest 2-1 earlier on Saturday.

Paris coach Thomas Tuchel made six changes to his line-up following the 2-0 midweek win at Istanbul Basaksehir in the Champions League, with Neymar one of those missing after suffering an adductor injury that is expected to keep him out until the upcoming international break.

However Nantes, whose game at Lens last weekend was called off following a coronavirus outbreak in their opponents’ squad, were missing an entire back four here, including three to Covid-19.

Sarabia hit the post early on for the visitors in this game, which was played behind closed doors after France returned to a full national lockdown in an attempt to stem a surge in coronavirus cases.

Nigerian winger Moses Simon then missed an open goal for Nantes, somehow failing to turn in a Randal Kolo Muani assist.

– New injury headache? –

Kolo Muani then curled a shot agonisingly wide after a Herrera slip had let Nantes in, and PSG lost Moise Kean — scorer of four goals in the previous two games — to injury at the break.

Nevertheless the league leaders got the breakthrough at the start of the second half when Mbappe picked out the former Manchester United midfielder Herrera to fire home.

Mbappe, who moved from the left wing to a more central role in the second half, then benefited from a very soft penalty award when he went down under pressure from Jean-Charles Castelletto.

The World Cup winner stroked home the penalty for his seventh league goal of the season, all of which have come in the last six matches.

He was then withdrawn and headed straight down the tunnel clutching his right hamstring, giving Tuchel potentially another injury headache ahead of Wednesday’s key Champions League clash with RB Leipzig in Germany.

Just before he went off, Nantes won a penalty of their own when Colin Dagba fouled Marcus Coco in the box, but Abdoul Kader Bamba’s effort from 12 yards was saved by Keylor Navas.

– Rennes back on track before Chelsea –

PSG have conceded just one goal in their seven-game winning run, while Sarabia chipped in after pouncing on Imran Louza’s back-pass to make it 23 goals scored in that time.

Earlier Rennes got back on track by coming from behind to beat Brest 2-1 as they prepare to go to Chelsea in the Champions League in midweek.

Defensive duo Damien Da Silva and Nayef Aguerd got the goals for Rennes after Franck Honorat had given the visitors the lead at Roazhon Park in a Brittany derby.

A third-place finish in the last, curtailed French season allowed Rennes to qualify for the Champions League for the first time, but they have taken just one point from their first two group games, a 1-1 draw at home to Russians Krasnodar being followed by a 1-0 loss away to Sevilla in midweek.

They face Chelsea in London on Wednesday, a game which will be missed by teenage French international midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who is injured and also played no part against Brest.

Barcelona held by 10-man Alaves to extend winless streak in La Liga

Madrid (AFP) – Barcelona made it four La Liga games without a win on Saturday after failing to beat 10-man Alaves, a 1-1 draw leaving Ronald Koeman’s side sitting 12th in the table.

Luis Rioja put Alaves in front at Mendizorrotza after an error from Barca goalkeeper Neto, with Antoine Griezmann equalising in the second half, a minute after Jota Peleteiro was sent off.

But with almost half an hour left and a extra man, Barcelona were still unable to find a winner, instead settling for a draw to go with recent defeats by Getafe and Real Madrid, and another draw against Sevilla.

It means Madrid, who had earlier won 4-1 at home to Huesca, now sit eight points clear of their Catalan rivals while Atletico are six ahead after they beat Osasuna 3-1. Atletico will go top if they win a game in hand.

Super sub Jota sends Liverpool top of the Premier League

Liverpool (AFP) – Diogo Jota came off the bench to score the winner five minutes from time as Liverpool came from behind to beat West Ham 2-1 and move three points clear at the top of the Premier League on Saturday.

Pablo Fornals took advantage of a depleted Liverpool defence to put the visitors in front early on, but just as against Sheffield United last weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s men fought back thanks to Jota’s flying start to his Liverpool career.

Despite scoring against the Blades and Midtjylland in the Champions League in midweek, the Portuguese had to settle for a place on the bench.

But after Mohamed Salah levelled from the penalty spot, Jota scored twice in quick succession after being introduced 20 minutes from time.

Jota’s first effort was ruled out after a VAR review for a foul by Sadio Mane, but as they so often showed by scoring late winners in their romp to the title last season, Liverpool were not to be denied as the Portuguese fired home from Xherdan Shaqiri’s pass.

Liverpool’s defensive woes without the injured Virgil van Dijk continued as they have now conceded more goals than any other side in the Premier League this season.

Nathaniel Phillips made his league debut for the champions at the heart of the defence with Joel Matip and Fabinho also out injured.

But it was Liverpool’s other first-choice centre-back Joe Gomez who was at fault for the opening goal as his misplaced header went straight to Fornals, whose low shot found the bottom corner via the inside of the post.

David Moyes’s men had been on an impressive unbeaten run in the Premier League, taking eight points from games against Wolves, Leicester, Tottenham and Manchester City over the past month.

– Salah on target –

The visitors sat in doggedly to defend their lead, but lacked threat on the counter-attack to add to it without the injured Michail Antonio.

And the Hammers gave Liverpool a route back into the game three minutes before half-time when Salah made the most of Arthur Masuaku’s challenge to win a penalty.

The Egyptian smashed home his 14th consecutive successful spot-kick to bring the Reds level and ward off a potential first league defeat at Anfield since April 2017.

Masuaku nearly made amends early in the second-half putting in a low cross for  Fornals who could only shoot tamely into the arms of Alisson Becker.

However, the vast majority of the action was still taking place in the West Ham half as Liverpool penned the visitors back.

Klopp turned to Jota and Shaqiri for inspiration off the bench and the changes worked to perfection.

Jota thought he had scored the winner earlier as he smashed home a loose ball after Mane clashed with Lukasz Fabianski and Angelo Ogbonna, but the goal was ruled out for a foul by the Senegalese.

But the Portuguese did register his fourth goal in seven Liverpool appearances since joining from Wolves in September as he kept his head with a cool finish from Shaqiri’s brilliant pass to open up the mass ranks of West Ham defence.

Inter angered by VAR after Parma draw, Atalanta move second

Milan (AFP) – Inter Milan came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Parma on Saturday but were left furious by a contentious VAR decision, while Atalanta beat bottom club Crotone to move second in Serie A.

Antonio Conte’s Inter have dropped points in three of their first six league games this season and could slip five points behind city rivals and leaders AC Milan, who visit Udinese on Sunday.

Inter had a strong penalty appeal when Botond Balogh hauled down Ivan Perisic in the second half, with Conte skipping his press conference, apparently in protest at the decision.

“It is our duty also to protest at the refereeing decisions. This is our only venue for protesting, as we have no other way of making our voices heard,” said sporting director Beppe Marotta.

“We realise VAR only intervenes with a clear and obvious error, but today there was a clear and obvious penalty. So either the referee pays closer attention or VAR must be used.

“If VAR is only partially used, then that damages everyone and creates a sense of inequality. After six games, it is only right to make this comment.”

Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta, who drew 2-2 with Ajax in the Champions League in midweek, sit one point behind AC Milan.

Inter dominated the first half at the San Siro, but Perisic volleyed off target and Achraf Hakimi nodded over from close range when he should have done better.

Parma made their hosts pay in the first minute after the break, as Gervinho powered home his first goal of the season.

The home side were given a mountain to climb just after the hour mark when Roberto Inglese slid the ball through for Gervinho to score his second.

Inter were desperate to try and keep pace with AC Milan and got themselves back into the game less than two minutes later thanks to Marcelo Brozovic’s deflected strike.

Andrea Ranocchia almost levelled shortly afterwards, but saw his header saved at point-blank range by Parma goalkeeper Luigi Sepe.

Ivan Perisic headed in Aleksandar Kolarov’s free-kick in the second minute of injury time, but it was too late for Inter to find a winner.

– Atalanta back to winning ways –

Luis Muriel scored twice as Atalanta bounced back from successive losses in Serie A with a 2-1 win at Crotone earlier on Saturday.

Atalanta conceded seven goals in back-to-back defeats by Napoli and Sampdoria.

They were not at their fluent best on Saturday, but did enough to edge out Crotone, who remain without a league win this season.

Gasperini said he had tough decisions to make ahead of next week’s crucial Champions League group-stage game against Liverpool, after Hans Hateboer and Cristian Romero were both substituted at Crotone with muscle problems.

“Serie A and the Champions League are two very different tournaments and I don’t want to choose between them,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“We’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see, (defender Rafael) Toloi also had a heavy knock to his knee, so we’ll see who we can recover and who we can’t.”

Muriel, who scored 18 Serie A goals last term despite only starting 10 matches, grabbed a 26th-minute opener by collecting Ruslan Malinovsky’s pass and drilling a low shot into the net.

Papu Gomez wasted an excellent chance to double the lead, but Colombian forward Muriel did slot in his second goal seven minutes before half-time.

Nwankwo Simy gave the hosts hope before the break, but their frustrations boiled over in the second half and coach Giovanni Stroppa was sent to the stands after receiving two yellow cards in a matter of minutes.

Jota caps Liverpool fightback as Man City, Chelsea win

London (AFP) – Diogo Jota capped Liverpool’s dramatic fightback as the Premier League champions beat West Ham 2-1 to move three points clear at the top, while Manchester City and Chelsea both won to keep in touch with the leaders on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were rocked by Pablo Fornals’ early strike at Anfield as the West Ham midfielder punished a poor header from Joe Gomez in the 10th minute.

The Reds drew level in the 42nd minute when Mohamed Salah was fouled by Arthur Masuaku and the Egyptian stepped up to convert the penalty for his eighth goal of the season.

Liverpool thought they had claimed the lead with just over 10 minutes remaining when substitute Jota turned in a loose ball.

Jota had pounced after Lukasz Fabianski saved Sadio Mane’s shot but after a lengthy delay that saw referee Kevin Friend make use of the pitchside monitor, the goal was ruled out for a foul by the Senegal winger.

With time running out, Jota ensured he would still finish as Liverpool’s hero.

In the 85th minute, the Portugal forward ran onto Xherdan Shaqiri’s pass to score his third goal since joining from Wolves in September.

It was Liverpool’s fourth successive victory since influential defender Virgil van Dijk was sidelined for several months with a serious knee injury suffered against Everton.

Despite their defensive issues this term, Liverpool have opened up a three-point lead over second placed Everton, with their Merseyside rivals in action at Newcastle on Sunday.

Title rivals City have yet to hit the free-scoring form of Pep Guardiola’s side at their best, as for the third consecutive league game they were held to a solitary goal.

But Kyle Walker’s long-range strike against his former club was good enough to earn a 1-0 win at goal-shy Sheffield United.

A fourth win in five games in all competition edges City up to eighth, five points behind Liverpool.

And there was another boost for City after the game as Guardiola ruled out a return to Barcelona despite interest from presidential candidates at the Catalan giants to bring the club’s most successful ever coach back to the Camp Nou.

“I said many times, my period as a manager in Barcelona is over,” said Guardiola, whose contract at the Etihad expires at the end of the season.

“I am incredibly happy here, still I have the desire to do well and this is the most important thing.”

On the field, there were plenty of positives for City as the newly-formed centre-back pairing of Aymeric Laporte and Ruben Dias played their part in a second consecutive clean sheet.

However, without injured strikers Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, City struggled to turn their dominance into goals.

“We played really well,” added Guardiola. “We struggled to score goals for the chances we created, 16 shots, eight on target, is a lot against this team.”

Instead, Walker was the unlikely match-winner with his first goal for a year in his 100th Premier League appearance for City.

– Chelsea hit their stride –

Chelsea are also finding their form after a slow start to the season as Frank Lampard’s men ran out 3-0 winners at Burnley to stretch their unbeaten run to nine games.

Hakim Ziyech was handed his first Premier League start after scoring in a 4-0 Champions League win away to Krasnodar in midweek and the Moroccan’s shot wrong-footed Nick Pope to open the floodgates for the visitors on 26 minutes.

Kurt Zouma’s bullet header then doubled Chelsea’s advantage from Mason Mount’s corner just after the hour mark.

Timo Werner was due to be rested until an injury in the warm-up to Christian Pulisic forced the German international into Lampard’s line-up.

And Werner rounded off an excellent second-half performance from the Blues with a fine finish from Ziyech’s pass.

After much criticism of his side’s defending, Lampard will be equally delighted at a fourth straight clean sheet as Chelsea moved up to fourth place.

Inter salvage Parma draw, Atalanta move second

Milan (AFP) – Ivan Perisic scored an injury-time equaliser as Inter Milan came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Parma on Saturday, while Atalanta beat bottom club Crotone to move second in Serie A.

Antonio Conte’s Inter have dropped points in three of their first six league games this season and could slip five points behind city rivals and leaders AC Milan, who visit Udinese on Sunday.

Rennes return to winning ways in France ahead of Chelsea trip

Paris (AFP) – Rennes got back on track by coming from behind to beat Brest 2-1 in Ligue 1 on Saturday as they prepare to go to Chelsea in the Champions League in midweek.

Defensive duo Damien Da Silva and Nayef Aguerd got the goals for Rennes after Franck Honorat had given the visitors the lead at Roazhon Park in a Brittany derby played behind closed doors after France returned to a full national lockdown in an attempt to stem a surge in coronavirus cases.

The result allows Julien Stephan’s team to move level on 18 points with leaders and reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain, and also Lille, at the top of the Ligue 1 table.

Rennes are third on goal difference having played a game more, with PSG in action later Saturday at Nantes and Lille hosting Lyon on Sunday.

A third-place finish in the last, curtailed French season allowed Rennes to qualify for the Champions League for the first time, but they have taken just one point from their first two group games, a 1-1 draw at home to Russians Krasnodar being followed by a 1-0 loss away to Sevilla in midweek.

They face Chelsea in London on Wednesday, a game which will be missed by teenage French international midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who is injured.

The 17-year-old was missing against Brest, who went in front 11 minutes into the second half as Honorat pounced to fire home after an error by Aguerd.

However captain Da Silva headed in a Romain Del Castillo free-kick to restore parity in the 66th minute and his fellow centre-back Aguerd, the Moroccan international, headed in at a corner four minutes later to complete the turnaround.

Mueller equals Kahn’s record as Bayern Munich go top

Berlin (AFP) – European champions Bayern Munich went top of the Bundesliga on Saturday as Thomas Mueller equalled Oliver Kahn’s record for most league wins in the famous shirt in Saturday’s 2-1 victory at Cologne.

Mueller, 31, converted an early penalty to put the visitors on the way to a success which saw him match the tally of legendary goalkeeper Kahn on 260 league wins.

Robert Lewandowski, who scored 10 goals in the opening five league games, was rested ahead of Bayern’s midweek Champions League match at Salzburg and the Bundesliga showdown at second-placed Dortmund next Saturday.

“(We were) too nonchalant up front, even though the passion was there,” said Mueller despite the reigning champions’ victory.

Serge Gnabry, who scored Bayern’s second goal, admitted: “We let the opponent back into the game, it wasn’t our best performance.”

However, RB Leipzig, who are now two points behind in third, can go back to the top of the table if they beat Borussia Moenchengladbach later on Saturday.

An early header by Gnabry led to Cologne defender Marius Wolf giving away the 13th-minute penalty which Mueller scored.

Gnabry added the second on the stroke of half-time when he rolled the ball into the net to finish a counter-attack.

However, Cologne improved in the second half and substitute midfielder Dominick Drexler pulled back a late goal.

Dortmund climbed to second, despite resting striker Erling Braut Haaland, as defender Mats Hummels scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld.

– Hummels injury –

Hummels picked up a late thigh injury while making a tackle.

However, Dortmund forward Julian Brandt backed Hummels to be fit for their Champions League match at Club Brugge on Wednesday, saying: “He’ll make it — he heals quick.”

Dortmund took the lead when England winger Jadon Sancho curled in a corner which bounced off Hummels and rolled over the line on 53 minutes.

Hummels grabbed his second with a header from a Marco Reus cross 19 minutes from time.

Augsburg climbed to fourth as winger Andre Hahn scored two late goals in a 3-1 home win against bottom side Mainz.

Swiss winger Ruben Vargas gave Augsburg the lead with a superb bicycle kick just before half-time.

Mainz sub Karim Onisiwo equalised on the hour mark, but Augsburg took advantage of tired legs as Germany winger Hahn netted twice in the final 10 minutes.

Werder Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt picked up a point on his third anniversary in the job with a 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt.

US striker Josh Sargent swept his shot home early in the second half to give Bremen the lead.

Frankfurt’s Japan midfielder Daichi Kamada had a first-half goal ruled out when VAR spotted Andre Silva was offside.

However, the Portugal international made amends when he buried Kamada’s cross into the Bremen net for the equaliser on 65 minutes.

Schalke, second from bottom, have gone 22 league games without a win after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to Stuttgart on Friday.

A first-half header by Schalke’s teenage defender Malick Thiaw was cancelled out by a leveller from Argentinian forward Nicolas Gonzalez for the visitors.

Schalke are edging towards the unwanted record of Tasmania Berlin, who now play in Germany’s fifth tier, who went 31 Bundesliga matches without victory in 1965/66.

Man City, Chelsea close on Premier League leaders

London (AFP) – Manchester City and Chelsea moved towards touching distance of the Premier League summit on Saturday as Sheffield United and Burnley remained winless at the other end of the table.

City have yet to hit the free-scoring form of Pep Guardiola’s side at their best, as for the third consecutive league game they were held to a solitary goal.

But Kyle Walker’s long-range strike against his former club was good enough to earn a 1-0 win at goal-shy Sheffield United.

A fourth win in five games in all competition edges City up to eighth but within two points of joint-leaders Everton, Liverpool and Wolves in a concertinaed table.

And there was another boost for City after the game as Pep Guardiola ruled out a return to Barcelona despite interest from presidential candidates at the Catalan giants to bring the club’s most successful ever coach back to the Camp Nou.

After much criticism of his side’s defending, Lampard will be equally delighted at a fourth straight clean sheet as Chelsea moved into the top four, just one point off the top.

However, Liverpool have the chance to move three points clear when the champions host West Ham at Anfield later on Saturday.

Ziyech stars as Chelsea sweep aside Burnley

Burnley (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Hakim Ziyech scored his first Premier League goal on his maiden English top-flight start as Chelsea powered to a 3-0 win at Burnley on Saturday.

Frank Lampard’s side dominated from start to finish thanks to an influential display from Morocco playmaker Ziyech.

Ziyech scored his first Chelsea goal in their midweek Champions League rout of Krasnodar and a cool finish in the first half at Turf Moor got him off the mark in the Premier League as well.

The 27-year-old, who joined from Ajax in the close-season, is the first player to score in his first two starts for Chelsea in all competitions since Diego Costa in 2014.

Kurt Zouma doubled the lead after half-time and Ziyech teed up Timo Werner to seal Chelsea’s first win in three Premier League games as they climbed to fourth place.

After the tiring trip to Russia, this was a confident performance from the Blues, with new boys Ziyech, Werner and Kai Havertz showing they would not be intimidated by a chilly, wind-swept afternoon against physical opponents.

Well marshalled by Thiago Silva, Chelsea kept a fourth consecutive clean sheet in all competitions, banishing the defensive woes that haunted them earlier this term.

It is the first time Chelsea have kept successive league clean sheets since Lampard took charge last year and they are now unbeaten in six games in all competitions.

Winless Burnley sit bottom of the table after losing five of their opening six top-flight matches for the first time since 1927-28.

– Chasing shadows –

There was a late change to Lampard’s starting line-up after Christian Pulisic was injured in the pre-match warm-up, with Werner moving from the substitutes’ bench into the team.

Chelsea were nearly caught cold when Ashley Barnes got behind Zouma to reach Josh Brownhill’s long pass, but the Burnley striker couldn’t keep his composure as Edouard Mendy rushed off his line to force him into a wayward shot.

Quickly recovering from that early escape, Chelsea appealed in vain for a penalty after Ben Chilwell appeared to be pushed in the back by Brownhill as he tried to reach Reece James’ cross.

Tammy Abraham’s looping header was tipped over by Burnley keeper Nick Pope.

Lampard’s team were well on top and the goal their pressure deserved arrived in the 26th minute.

Werner took Ziyech’s pass and played it back into the Burnley area for Abraham.

A deft layoff from Abraham teed up Ziyech and he drilled his low shot past the wrong-footed Pope from 18 yards.

Werner almost made it two just before the break, with a last-ditch block from Kevin Long taking the sting out of the Chelsea forward’s close-range effort.

Mason Mount fired straight at Pope after a flowing Chelsea move early in the second half.

Burnley were chasing shadows for long periods, but they almost equalised against the run of play when Barnes shot just wide from long range.

Zouma put the result beyond doubt in the 63rd minute, the French defender meeting Mount’s corner with a thumping header for his third goal of the season.

Werner got Chelsea’s third in the 70th minute with a clinical finish from Ziyech’s pass for his fifth goal of an impressive start following his close-season move from RB Leipzig.

Ronaldo set for return on Juventus bench against Spezia

Milan (AFP) – Cristiano Ronaldo has returned a second negative coronavirus test but will not start Sunday’s game against Spezia, Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo said on the eve of the match.

“The negative result of the second swab has also arrived, so today Cristiano Ronaldo will be called up to the team,” said Pirlo.

“He is fine and has been training individually this morning. I don’t think he will start from the beginning, we will see how it goes tomorrow.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has missed four games for Juventus including the midweek Champions League defeat against Barcelona.

But the 35-year-old will travel with the team to Cesena on the Adriatic coast, where Ligurian club Spezia are playing their home games as their Stadio Picco is modernised for their first season in the top flight.

Juventus are fifth in Serie A having drawn three games of five including 1-1 against promoted Crotone, and are four points behind leaders AC Milan.

“Tomorrow is a game we must win,” said Pirlo of 14th-placed Spezia, who have five points from as many games.

“It will be difficult, as it was in Crotone, Spezia are a newly promoted side who are doing well.

“I know their coach (Vincenzo Italiano) well, we were on the same coaching course together,” continued Pirlo who got his coaching diploma just before the start of the season.

“I’m not surprised about the pressure, I’ve always been in the spotlight and I’m used to having responsibilities.”

Ronaldo has been named alongside fellow strikers Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata.

Defender Leonardo Bonucci is expected to play after a slight thigh problem, but Giorgio Chiellini will not.

“He is better, but not yet available,” added Pirlo of the veteran captain.

Bayern Munich sweep past Cologne to go top without Lewandowski

Berlin (AFP) – European champions Bayern Munich went top of the Bundesliga on Saturday as Thomas Mueller and Serge Gnabry provided the goals with Robert Lewandowski rested for their 2-1 win at Cologne.

Bayern coach Hansi Flick opted to leave out Lewandowski, who scored a record 10 goals in the opening five league games, ahead of their midweek Champions League match at Salzburg and a Bundesliga showdown at Dortmund next Saturday.

However, RB Leipzig, who are now two points behind in third, can go back to the top of the table if they beat Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday evening.

Mueller netted an early penalty and Gnabry finished a counter-attack on the stroke of half-time to leave Bayern 2-0 up at the break.

Cologne improved in the second-half and replacement midfielder Dominick Drexler pulled back a late goal.

Borussia Dortmund climbed to second in the table without star striker Erling Braut Haaland as defender Mats Hummels scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Arminia Bielefeld.

US women’s sports stars Rapinoe, Bird announce engagement

Washington (AFP) – Two-time Women’s World Cup winner Megan Rapinoe and four-time Olympic women’s basketball champion Sue Bird have announced their engagement on social media.

Bird posted a photo on her Instagram account Friday of a kneeling Rapinoe placing a ring on her left hand.

“Ring Season. Congrats to THE power couple on their engagement!!!” tweeted the Seattle Storm, the Women’s NBA club Bird helped to a league title in October.

Rapinoe, a 35-year-old midfielder, sparked the United States to victory in the 2015 and 2019 Women’s World Cups and a gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. She is a winger and captain for the OL Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League.

Bird, a 40-year-old guard, sparked the US women’s Olympic basketball dynasty to gold medals in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016 and helped the Storm capture Women’s NBA titles in 204, 2010, 2018 and this year, when they played in a Florida Covid-19 quarantine bubble.

‘It’s over’, Guardiola rules out return as Barca boss

Sheffield (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Pep Guardiola ruled out ever taking charge of Barcelona for a second spell as the Manchester City boss insisted he retains the “desire” to succeed in England.

Guardiola is the most decorated coach in Barca’s glorious history after winning 14 trophies in four years in charge between 2008 and 2012.

Josep Maria Bartomeu finally bowed to pressure to resign as president of the Catalan giants this week, with one of the leading candidates to take over, Victor Font, saying he wants to bring legends like Guardiola and his former players Xavi and Carles Puyol back to work for the club.

“I said many times, my period as a manager in Barcelona is over. I think in life there is once you have to do things,” Guardiola said after City’s 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday.

“There are incredible people who can be in charge, now for example (Barcelona coach) Ronald Koeman is an excellent manager. It is over.”

A boyhood Barca fan, Guardiola also enjoyed an illustrious playing career at the Camp Nou and still holds season tickets as a supporter.

“I will come back to my seats to see my club to watch a game. I am incredibly happy here, still I have the desire to do well and this is the most important thing.

“Now there will be elections in Barcelona. Hopefully they can choose the right board to maintain this incredible club Barcelona in the highest level.”

Guardiola is already into the longest managerial spell of his career with this his fifth season at City.

His side still look a long way off the heights they reached in winning back-to-back Premier League titles between 2017 and 2019, but they are slowly getting up to speed after a start to the campaign disrupted by injuries, coronavirus cases and just a two-week long pre-season.

Kyle Walker’s long-range effort against his former club was enough to secure City’s fourth win in five games in all competitions as they move up to seventh in the Premier League, just two points off the top.

Without a natural striker due to injuries to Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, City struggled to turn their dominance into goals at Bramall Lane.

“We played really well,” added Guardiola. “We struggled to score goals for the chances we created, 16 shots, eight on target, is a lot against this team.”

Aaron Ramsdale was busy in the Blades’ goal as he twice denied Ferran Torres from close range, while he unconvincingly parried Rodrigo’s long-range effort behind.

Walker finally broke the deadlock from similar range on 28 minutes as his shot arrowed low past Ramsdale’s right-hand, but there was a muted celebration from the England international against his boyhood club.

“My mum and dad live here, so if I’d celebrated I’d have got a lot of stick,” said Walker. “I’m a Sheffield United fan, so I couldn’t celebrate.”

Kevin De Bruyne flashed a shot wide following another attacking burst from Walker early in the second-half before Ramsdale produced his best save of the game from Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick.

However, City’s failure to kill off the game gave Chris Wilder’s men chances to snatch an unlikely point.

John Lundstram had the best chance for the hosts when he side-footed Sander Berge’s low cross over.

But Sheffield United have still scored just three goals in seven games to start the season and remain second bottom on just one point.

Hazard stunner gives revived Real Madrid win over Huesca

Madrid (AFP) – Eden Hazard scored his first goal for Real Madrid in over a year and his team appear to turn a corner as they beat newly-promoted Huesca 4-1 in La Liga on Saturday.

Hazard has had a terrible time with injuries since joining Madrid for 100 million euros ($113 million) from Chelsea in 2019 but the Belgian will hope his stunning strike from distance at the Alfredo di Stefano can kick-start his career in Spain.

Karim Benzema and Fede Valverde made the win secure before Huesca scored through David Ferreiro, only for Benzema to add his second and Madrid’s fourth in injury-time.

Zinedine Zidane’s side jump above Real Sociedad to the top of the table to cap an encouraging week, which began with a Clasico win over Barcelona at Camp Nou and finishes with them moving nine points clear of the Catalans, who play away at Alaves later on Saturday.

In between, Madrid came too close for comfort to another damaging defeat in the Champions League but two late goals salvaged a draw at Borussia Monchengladbach that in the end felt like a win.

Huesca, who are yet to win this season, might feel the scoreline was harsh after they squandered early chances.

Madrid will hope the dip that put Zidane under pressure earlier this month is over.

Zidane will have been particularly delighted with Hazard, whose goal was his first for Madrid since he scored against Granada in October last year, and his second overall in La Liga.

Ankle surgery kept Hazard out for the majority of last season and he was not fit for the start of this one, with Madrid only describing his latest setback as a “muscle injury”.

But he made his first appearance off the bench in the Champions League in midweek and against Huesca  marked his first start with a brilliant goal in the first half.

Until then, Huesca had been the better team but Hazard’s strike turned the contest in the 40th minute, when he received the ball on the half-turn and swerved a superb shot into the corner from 30 yards out.

Benzema made it two, chesting down Lucas Vazquez’s cross at the back post and driving in, before Valverde struck a sweet half-volley into the corner.

Ferreiro gave Huesca brief hope with 16 minutes left but Madrid were never overly troubled and Benzema rounded off the win in injury-time, converting a smart header back from Rodrygo.

Walker strike ensures Man City blunt the Blades

Sheffield (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Manchester City moved two points off the top of the Premier League as Kyle Walker’s long-range strike was enough to see off winless Sheffield United 1-0 at Bramall Lane.

Pep Guardiola’s men had won just two of their opening five league games of the season and are yet to hit top gear ahead of Liverpool’s visit to the Etihad next weekend.

The visitors dominated the game, but had just Walker’s speculative shot to show for it as they again lacked a ruthless streak without a natural striker.

Ferran Torres played as the centre-forward in the absence of the injured Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus and the Spanish winger had an abundance of chances to net his first Premier League goal.

Aaron Ramsdale was busy in the Blades’ goal as he twice-denied Torres from close range, while he unconvincingly parried Rodrigo’s long-range effort behind.

Walker finally broke the deadlock from similar range on 28 minutes as his shot arrowed low past Ramsdale’s right-hand, but there was a muted celebration from the England international against his boyhood club.

The one-way traffic continued early in the second-half as Torres failed to lift the ball over the stranded Ramsdale as he rushed off his line.

Kevin De Bruyne flashed a shot across goal and wide following another attacking burst from Walker before Ramsdale produced his best save of the game from Riyad Mahrez’s free-kick.

City, by contrast, have won four of their last five in all competitions as they slowly click into gear after a disrupted start to the season due to injuries, coronavirus cases and just a two-week long pre-season.

Entire Lazio squad in quarantine after Covid-19 positives

Rome (AFP) – Lazio, already deprived of several players, announced on Saturday that it had put its entire squad in quarantine after positive coronavirus tests.

Lazio fielded a depleted team in Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday and drew 1-1 without last season’s top European scorer Ciro Immobile and midfielders Luis Alberto, Manuel Lazzari, Lucas Leiva and Djavan Anderson.

The club said in a statement on Saturday that it had conducted a further round of tests on Friday.

“Some members of the team group tested positive,” it said without giving any names.

It is the first time Lazio has explicitly confirmed cases of Covid-19 in its squad after talking about “doubtful” tests during the week, even though it omitted players from its squad.

“The whole team will repeat today’s checks in order to identify the players that can be used in tomorrow’s match between Turin and Lazio,” the club said.

“The positive results were placed in isolation at home while the team will observe a period of quarantine under active supervision by the medical staff.”

Lazio are 12th in the Italian Championship and travel to Petersburg to play Zenit in the Champions League on Wednesday.

World Cup winner and ‘Toothless Tiger’ Nobby Stiles dies, aged 78

London (AFP) – Nobby Stiles, whose celebratory dance on the Wembley pitch holding the World Cup trophy in one hand and his dentures in the other, and described as the “heart and soul” of England’s 1966 World Cup winning team, has died, aged 78.

Stiles was a tough-tackling midfielder and an integral part of the Manchester United side under Matt Busby who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968.

He played every minute of the World Cup campaign and is largely credited for keeping Portugal’s superstar Eusebio under wraps in the semi-final.

“The heart and soul of the team, he will be sorely missed,” tweeted Geoff Hurst who scored a hat-trick in the 4-2 win over West Germany in the final.

Known as ‘The Toothless Tiger’ — for his physical appearance not for his whole-hearted tackling — Stiles suffered a series of health issues in later life, including prostate cancer and dementia.

In 2010, after a mini-stroke, he decided to sell his medals in order to leave something to his family.

United bought them for £200,000 ($259,000) and the medals are now housed in the club’s museum.

“The Stiles family are sad to announce that Nobby Stiles passed away peacefully today (30/10/2020) surrounded by his family after a long illness,” read a family statement.

“The family kindly ask for privacy at this sad time.”

Stiles, who also won two league titles with United, is the latest member of Alf Ramsey’s 1966 team to pass away.

Jack Charlton died earlier this year and Norman Hunter — who did not play in the final but was in the squad — also passed away.

Only George Cohen, Hurst, Roger Hunt and Stiles’s fellow Manchester United icon Bobby Charlton remain alive of the starting XI.

– ‘Half-blind dwarf’ –

Although Stiles featured throughout the 1966 tournament, he ended up with just 28 caps, the lowest number of any of the World Cup-winning side.

Stiles was born in the cellar of the family home during a Second World War air raid in May 1942 and as he related in his 2003 biography ‘After The Ball’ it was not the end of his close shaves.

“I was born a half-blind dwarf (he suffered from severe short sightedness) who was bombed by the Germans and run over by a trolley bus when I was one.”

Stiles — who was a devout Roman Catholic and went to Mass every day of the finals — was one of the most instantly recognisable faces of the 1966 team with a grin which revealed a number of teeth missing.

“The image of Nobby dancing is the most iconic moment in British football history aside from Bobby Moore lifting the trophy,” former United great Gary Neville told Sky Sports News.

“Such gregariousness was not really his style.”

England’s official Twitter account tweeted their condolences.

“We’re incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of Nobby Stiles, a key member of our @FIFAWorldCup-winning squad, at the age of 78. All of our thoughts are with Nobby’s loved ones.”

Stiles left United in 1971, going on to play for Middlesbrough and Preston.

He later managed Preston between 1977 and 1981, before coaching Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps and then West Brom between 1985 and 1986.

He returned to United as a youth team coach under Alex Ferguson in 1989 for a four-year stint where he encountered the class of ’92 including David Beckham, Neville and Ryan Giggs.

“You suddenly realise at moments like these how special it is to spend time with people like Nobby,” added Neville.

“He was ferocious, never left anything out there when he played.

“Winning was doing everything possible to achieve that.”

Stiles was married to Kay, a sister of Irish international Johnny Giles, and had three children.

“From humble beginnings to a European & World Cup winner,” he tweeted.

“Much-loved in Greater Manchester & by millions across the country. We will miss you, Nobby, but thanks for all the memories. Our love to family and friends.”

FIFA faces increasingly crowded legal fixture list

Bellinzona (Switzerland) (AFP) – The suspended sentence for Jerome Valcke, the former FIFA number two, in a corruption verdict on Friday in Switzerland may have spared the football world serious embarrassment but the case was only part of an ever-growing list of court proceedings involving the governing body to which an indictment of president Gianni Infantino was recently added.

AFP Sport looks at the most significant of the ongoing cases.

– Four World Cup votes under scrutiny –

The most embarrassing investigations for FIFA because of the shadow they cast on its marquee competition are into the awarding of World Cups.

The key decision may have been to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar, over rivals including the USA and Australia, in December 2010, in a vote which also gave the 2018 World Cup to Russia.

That seems to have piqued the interest of the American judiciary whose investigation led to the high-profile arrests of seven officials in Zurich in on May 27, 2015 over TV rights corruption on the eve of a FIFA meeting at which Sepp Blatter was re-elected president.

FIFA has investigated the Qatar bid. The US Department of Justice this year made clear it still has suspicions.

The French justice system is investigating a lunch on November 23, 2010 involving Nicolas Sarkozy, at the time the head of state, two high-ranking Qatari officials and Michel Platini, the head of UEFA, for “active and passive corruption”.

While Qatar is the focus of attention, there are also suspicions over the awards of the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2010 World Cup to South Africa.

In April, the Swiss abandoned a trial over the award of the 2006 World Cup to Germany because of the statute of limitations, though a case is still pending in Frankfurt over tax evasion.

– Bribes and TV rights –

TV rights, FIFA’s main source of revenue, are also its main source of litigation.

In addition to a string of bans handed out by FIFA’s independent Ethics Committee, outside prosecutors are investigating both World Cup and continental tournament rights.

“FIFAgate”, which began with the arrests in May 2015, is primarily concerned with “racketeering” by officials in the two continental federations in the Americas, CONMEBOL and CONCACAF, in exchange for the rights to continental competitions.

Because the offences involved US companies or were committed in part in the country, US courts have been able to prosecute.

Paraguayan former CONMEBOL president Juan Angel Napout was sentenced to nine years in prison and former Brazilian football president Jose Maria Marin to four.

Jeffrey Webb, the Cayman Islander who was briefly head of CONCACAF, has pleaded guilty and agreed to pay a fine of $6.7 million. He is awaiting his sentencing.

One of his predecessors, Jack Warner, a former member of the FIFA executive committee, has been indicted but remains in Trinidad and Tobago.

Friday’s judgement in Switzerland involved not only Valcke but the Qatari boss of beIN Media and Paris Saint-Germain, Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

Both were charged with “unfair management” and “incitement”, though FIFA drew some of the teeth from the case when it settled out of court with Al-Khelaifi in January and dropped its complaint against him forcing prosecutors to drop a charge of corruption.

– Blatter-Platini –

Blatter and Platini, the former heads of world and European football, were banned by FIFA at the end of 2015.

They are subject of a long-running Swiss investigation for “unfair management” over a payment of 2 million Swiss francs from FIFA to Platini in 2011 which Blatter approved even though there was no written contract.

Platini sees this case as part of the “conspiracy” which stopped him running for FIFA presidency after Blatter resigned.

– And now, Infantino –

Instead, Platini’s former deputy at UEFA, Gianni Infantino was elected in 2016 on a promise to “restore the image of the FIFA”.

He has been facing Swiss criminal proceedings since July 30 for “incitement to abuse of authority”, “violation of official secrecy” and “obstruction of criminal proceedings”.

Infantino, who is Swiss, is accused of holding three secret meetings in 2016 and 2017 with Michael Lauber, then head of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, raising suspicions of collusion over ongoing investigations.

Lauber resigned this summer, FIFA’s ethics arm cleared Infantino in August.

Infantino says it is “absurd” that he should be charged over meeting a magistrate, and asserts that he was showing the public prosecutor’s office “that the new FIFA was a thousand miles away from the old one” which was “the victim of corrupt officials” in the Blatter era.
