Spot-on Nani fires Orlando into MLS restart semis

Orlando (AFP) – Former Manchester United star Nani scored the winning spot-kick as Orlando upset Los Angeles FC in a penalty shoot-out to reach the semi-finals of the Major League Soccer restart tournament on Friday.

Portuguese international Nani, who had seen a penalty saved in normal time before the game finished in a 1-1 draw, made no mistake in the shoot-out with his side’s fifth and final spot-kick.

The 33-year-old sent Los Angeles goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer the wrong way before wheeling away to be mobbed by jubilant Orlando team-mates at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Disney World, Florida.

Nani had been given the chance to seal victory in a tense shoot-out which saw Los Angeles surrender the initiative when veteran defender Jordan Harvey crashed his penalty against the crossbar.

Earlier, Los Angeles had appeared to be heading for a place in the last four after Bradley Wright-Phillips scored from close range in the 64th minute to put the favourites 1-0 up.

That goal came just moments after Vermeer had denied Nani from the penalty spot after Diego Palacios’s clumsy foul on Orlando right back Ruan.

But as the game wore on in energy-sapping heat and humidity, Los Angeles were left clinging on as Orlando pressed for an equaliser.

It arrived in the 90th minute when Nani’s corner from the right hand side was met by left back Joao Moutinho, who lost his marker to thump home a header.

Orlando will now face either San Jose Earthquakes or Minnesota in the last four, who play in their quarter-final on Saturday.

But it was a disappointing early exit for Los Angeles, who had looked to be on course for their first silverware after a rousing 4-1 victory over MLS Cup champions Seattle in the last 16.

The “MLS is Back” restart tournament is taking place at Disney World in Orlando after a four-month coronavirus shutdown which halted the regular season in March.

PSG edge out Lyon on penalties in French League Cup final

Paris (AFP) – Pablo Sarabia scored the winning penalty in a shoot-out as Paris Saint-Germain warmed up for their assault on the Champions League in Lisbon by defeating Lyon in Friday’s French League Cup final to claim another domestic treble.

The Spaniard’s successful kick came after Keylor Navas saved from Bertrand Traore and allowed PSG to win 6-5 on penalties after the game at the Stade de France finished 0-0 at the end of extra time.

The victory comes a week after they beat Saint-Etienne 1-0 in the French Cup final, the first competitive match on French soil since the coronavirus shutdown.

They had previously been awarded the Ligue 1 title by virtue of being top when the season was ended in April with 10 rounds of matches unplayed because of the health crisis.

The victory for Thomas Tuchel’s team came after they had the better of a terse final on a sweaty night, but they badly missed the injured Kylian Mbappe.

The masked France superstar watched from the stands as Lyon kept PSG at bay for two hours before having Brazilian defender Rafael sent off for chopping down Angel Di Maria on the edge of the box late in extra time.

Mbappe was injured in last week’s French Cup final, suffering a sprained ankle that looks likely to rule him out of the Champions League quarter-final against Atalanta in Lisbon on August 12.

PSG are desperate for tangible success in Europe but on this evidence they still have some rust to shake off before being ready for that test.

In the meantime, they at least seized their last chance to win a domestic treble, their fourth in the last six years. The League Cup, an unloved competition, will be discontinued next season.

– No European football for Lyon? –

Covid-19 concerns did not prevent a crowd from attending this match, but only 3,500 fans were allowed inside the 80,000-capacity venue.

It was the Parisian contingent who were celebrating at the end, as their team lifted the trophy for the ninth time in total, denying Lyon a first trophy since 2012.

Both of these teams must fear being at a disadvantage in the latter stages of the Champions League though after France opted against restarting its league season, unlike the other major European leagues.

As a consequence, the two cup finals are the only competitive match practice PSG will have managed in five months before facing Atalanta.

Meanwhile, this was Lyon’s one and only competitive game since early March before they make a daunting trip to Turin to take on Juventus in their Champions League last 16 second leg next Friday.

At least they have a 1-0 lead to defend, but they will still need to do better than they did here.

PSG created almost all the notable chances, despite Mauro Icardi looking sluggish up front.

Neymar looked sharper, fresh from scoring the winner in the French Cup final.

He had the first chance of the game when he drilled a first-time shot just wide from a Thiago Silva lay-off in the eighth minute, and he also saw a header tipped over by Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes late in normal time before going on to coolly net in the shoot-out.

In between, Lopes also made a spectacular save to turn an Idrissa Gueye piledriver over late in the first half.

Marco Verratti was outstanding in the Paris midfield, a major positive for Tuchel who along with Mbappe’s injury also has major problems at full-back.

Here, left-back Layvin Kurzawa was needed on the right but hobbled off hurt midway through the second half.

Lyon, meanwhile, will now not be in Europe next season for the first time in 24 years, unless they win the Champions League.

PSG, Marseille and Rennes will be France’s representatives in the 2020/21 Champions League, with Reims now joining Lille and Nice in the Europa League.

Cameroon 1990 World Cup captain Tataw dies, age 57

Douala (AFP) – Stephen Tataw, the man who captained Cameroon to a landmark place in the 1990 World Cup quarter-finals, died Friday after an illness, the country’s football federation Fecafoot announced.

Tataw was 57.

“Stephen Tataw died this morning in Yaounde following an illness,” Fecafoot wrote on Twitter.

Tataw was the Cameroon captain when the team made the last eight at the World Cup in Italy 30 years ago.

They were knocked out by England but famously defeated reigning champions Argentina in the opening game.

Cameroon also saw off Romania and Colombia to become the first African nation to reach the quarter-finals.

Two years earlier, the Indomnitable Lions had won the African Cup of Nations with Tataw at the heart of the defence.

Tataw played his club football at home as well as in Japan.

After retiring, he worked with the federation in supervising rhe national teams.

Sheffield Wednesday hit with 12-point deduction

London (AFP) – Sheffield Wednesday will be deducted 12 points for the 2020-21 Championship season after being found guilty of breaching the English Football League’s (EFL) financial rules.

An independent panel deemed the club should not have included profits from the sale of the club’s Hillsborough Stadium to owner Dejphon Chansiri in financial statements for the period ending July 2018.

The sale helped Wednesday stay within the EFL profit and sustainability regulations that dictate Championship teams are permitted to lose a maximum of £39 million ($51 million) over three years.

Wednesday said they are “extremely disappointed” with the verdict but welcomed the decision not to impose the penalty for the recently completed 2019/20 season, which would have resulted in relegation to League One.

The Owls finished 16th in the Championship, eight points clear of the drop zone.

“An independent disciplinary commission, appointed under EFL regulations, has ruled that Sheffield Wednesday will receive a 12-point deduction for breaching the league’s profitability and sustainability rules for the three season reporting period ending with season 2017-18,” read an EFL statement.

“The sporting sanction will take effect in season 2020-21.”

Wednesday were found not guilty of breaching their “duty of utmost good faith to the EFL by deliberately concealing information”.

“The club is extremely disappointed that the commission has imposed a 12-point deduction to be applied next season and awaits the written reasons for this decision,” Wednesday said in a statement.

“The club welcomes the decision that the commission cleared Sheffield Wednesday of the charge of acting in bad faith in its dealings with the EFL. Further, the commission decided not to apply a 12-point deduction this season, thereby imposing relegation.”

Wigan were relegated to League One after a 12-point penalty for entering administration was imposed on the final standings for the 2019/20 season.

Scottish Premiership fails to get U.S. media rights deal in time for new season

Despite interest from a few broadcasters in the United States, the Scottish Professional Football League was unable to get a U.S. media rights deal wrapped up before the start of the Scottish Premiership season that begins Saturday, August 1.

After B/R Live decided not to renew its deal for the upcoming season, fans of Scottish football in the United States found themselves in the lurch with no broadcaster picking up the rights to the league. It’s the first time in recent history that the Scottish top-flight league won’t be available in the United States. In previous years, the Scottish Premiership has had games strewn across GolTV, Fox Soccer Channel, B/R Live, FS1, FS2, FOX Soccer 2GO and FOX Soccer Plus.

Part of the roadblock for broadcasters is that Scottish football clubs are allowed to sell broadcast streams of home and away matches direct to consumers, thereby diluting the value of the rights themselves.

For the upcoming season, soccer fans in the United States can subscribe to club TV channels such as Celtic TV ($196/season), Rangers TV ($315/season), Reds TV ($196/season for Aberdeen supporters), and so on through the official club websites.

With extortionate prices such as these, it’s no wonder that illegal streaming is rife among a lot of soccer fans who are priced out of watching games and have no U.S. broadcaster who is willing to air select games from the league (this weekend’s fixtures on Sky Sports in the UK include Aberdeen vs. Rangers, Celtic against Hamilton, and Ross County vs. Motherwell).

According to a SPFL spokesperson, “This will see us ramping up monitoring of illegal streams of SPFL matches. Illegal streaming is not simply against the law — it sucks vital revenue out of SPFL clubs at a time when they are fighting for survival in the face of the pandemic.”

Thankfully this season, some of the Scottish clubs are offering monthly rates for direct to consumer subscriptions. Celtic TV is $20 per month. Aberdeen’s RedTV is the same price. Rangers TV doesn’t offer a monthly plan, but you can subscribe to a per-game rate of approximately $13.

While that provides short-term options for soccer fans, those monthly prices and per-game rates will quickly add up considering that the season runs until Saturday, May 15.

Despite many of the Scottish clubs having a diehard base of supporters in the United States, the fact that the Scottish Premiership was unable to lock in a deal prior to the new season is testament to the disorganization of the SPFL itself. It’s been one mistake after another in the way that the league is marketed internationally.

Today’s news is another example of a missed opportunity at a time when the Scottish league is in the position of being the first major European league to return to action for the 2020/21 season. At this rate, it won’t be major for much longer if it can be considered major at all.

Nigeria’s Osimhen joins Napoli for up to 80 million euros

Rome (AFP) – Victor Osimhen has signed for Napoli after the Serie A side splashed out a club record fee of up to 80 million euros ($94.6 million) to sign the Nigeria forward from French outfit Lille.

A source from Lille who was familiar with the transfer had told AFP that the Ligue 1 team would receive 70 million euros with add-ons potentially worth 10 million euros.

That figure was then confirmed by Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis to the Gazzetta dello Sport, who also report the movie mogul as saying that Osimhen had signed a five-year deal with the Italian club.

“It’s 70 million euros to be paid over five years and 10 million euros of bonuses according to certain results,” the Gazzetta reported De Laurentiis as saying.

“His contract will begin at four million euros a year and will progressively increase to 4.5 million euros by the end of the contract.”

The total fee would make Osimhen, 21, one of the most expensive players in Serie A history, and is almost double Napoli’s previous club record of around 40 million euros paid for Gonzalo Higuain in 2013 and Hirving Lozano last year.

His move to Napoli had been widely reported for weeks, but De Laurentiis told Gazzetta that the transfer had been held up by Osimhen firing his two agents and hiring a new one.

Osimhen scored 18 times last season and was one of the revelations of France’s curtailed campaign with 13 Ligue 1 goals as Lille finished fourth.

The transfer will see Lille again make a huge profit for a player after taking £72 million off Premier League team Arsenal for Nicolas Pepe, with Osimhen arriving at the club in northern France for 12 million euros from Belgian club Charleroi last summer.

Napoli go into their final match of the season against Lazio knowing they will finish seventh in Serie A. They have qualified for the group stage of the Europa League by virtue of winning the Italian Cup.

Rome (AFP) – Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen has signed for Serie A side Napoli from French outfit Lille, the two clubs announced on Friday.

Neither club officially gave details of the transfer, but a source from Lille who was familiar with the transfer told AFP that the Ligue 1 team would receive 70 million euros ($82.8 million) with add-ons potentially worth 10 million euros.

Italian media report however that Napoli have shelled out 50 million euros before add-ons. Either figure would be a club record transfer fee paid by Napoli.

Osimhen, 21, scored 18 times last season and was one of the revelations of France’s curtailed campaign.

FA Cup win would be ‘small step’ in Lampard’s plan for Chelsea

London (AFP) – Frank Lampard believes Chelsea should be aiming to fight for league titles every year, but winning the FA Cup on Saturday could be a building block towards a title challenge next season.

In his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge, Lampard has guided Chelsea back into the Champions League next season despite the loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid and a transfer ban to contend with.

Chelsea are already making up for lost time in the transfer market with Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech signed for next season.

But Lampard insists victory over Arsenal at Wembley will only lead to greater things if it is accompanied by the same dedication to improve as his squad have shown this season.

“It’s a nice boost but it will only mean anything going forward if we take it in our pocket, move forward and improve as a club and on the training pitch,” Lampard said on Friday.

“A top club will compete for cups and league titles every year. We did it for a long time.

“In the last few years we haven’t been able to fight for that league title so it doesn’t mean all of sudden we are back and in that picture, but it will be a nice, small step when you consider where we want to get to next year.”

Lampard is able to welcome N’Golo Kante back from a hamstring injury that kept the French midfielder out for the last six games.

Willian is also fit again for what could be his final game for the club.

The Brazilian’s contract expires at the end of the season, but Lampard has no doubts over using him at Wembley despite rumours he could be on his way to Arsenal next season.

Willian played a key role in getting Chelsea into the Premier League’s top four with four goals since the season restarted in June.

“I’ve known Willian for many years now as a player and now as his coach,” added Lampard of his former teammate.

“If anyone wants to see the mentality of him, it’s been shown since restart.

“He’s been fantastic for us, he’s been fantastic this season. He’s shown the right attitude.

“So I would expect nothing less than he’s shown already, and that’s Willian for you.”

World Cup winner Hoewedes retires at 32

Berlin (AFP) – Benedikt Hoewedes, a German World Cup winner, said on Friday that he is retiring aged 32 for family reasons.

He made 44 appearances for Germany at centre-back and full-back and played every minute on the way to triumph in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

He played more than 330 times for Schalke before spending the 2017-18 season on loan at Juventus and then moving to Lokomotiv Moscow for two seasons. The Russian club agreed to release Hoewedes from his contract in June.

“I was recently with my wife and son in a camper van in the south of France,” Hoewedes told Der Spiegel magazine in an interview published on Friday.

“I noticed how happy I was to see my son next to me. Football seemed so unimportant.”

“My son is 21 months old and during my time in Moscow I wasn’t able to enjoy it. And I suffered from it,” he said.

“It’s difficult to take the plunge, to give up playing in front of sold-out stadiums. Maybe this period with the coronavirus and these ghostly matches was a harbinger.”

Hoewedes also criticised the “brutal” development of football, which “is moving further and further away from the fans”.

He is the seventh 2014 world champion to hang up his boots. Two weeks ago, former Borussia Dortmund player Andre Schuerrle surprisingly retired at the age of just 29.

Premier League wanted Saudi state to become Newcastle director – Staveley

London (AFP) – The Premier League wanted the Saudi state to become a director of Newcastle United for a takeover deal to go through, according to a leading member of the investment group who were looking to buy the club.

A proposed £300 million ($391 million) takeover collapsed on Thursday when the investment group of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), billionaire brothers David and Simon Reuben and Amanda Staveley of PCP Capital Partners said they had withdrawn their interest after three months waiting for the Premier League’s approval.

Issues over Saudi piracy of sports broadcasting rights, including the Premier League, and pressure from human rights groups to block the deal complicated the process.

Staveley has been interested in buying the club for the past three years and had finally agreed a deal with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley in April with PIF reportedly set to take an 80 percent stake in the club.

“The Premier League wanted the country, Saudi, to become a director of the football club,” Staveley told The Athletic.

“That’s what this is about. They were effectively saying ‘PIF wouldn’t be the ultimate beneficial owner, we believe it’s actually the government, therefore we want the country to become a director’.

“The Premier League made it so hard. It would be unprecedented. No country has ever become a director of a club. It’s ridiculous.”

Staveley also claimed that other Premier League clubs played a part in influencing the league’s decision to stall over seeing the deal through.

Newcastle have not won a major domestic trophy since 1955, but could still count on regular crowds of 50,000 before coronavirus pandemic forced stadiums to close.

Many fans dreamed that the riches of a Saudi-backed project could replicate Manchester City’s success in winning four Premier League titles since Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour bought the club in 2008.

“We know that other clubs briefed heavily against it. Because they were jealous,” Staveley added.

“Newcastle are the last great untapped club. The last great club with so much potential to grow and improve and with a fanbase who were already there and who wanted it so much.”

Newcastle’s all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer said the club’s fans have been left angry and disappointed by the collapse of the takeover.

“There’s a lot of anger, understandably so, and a massive amount of disappointment,” Shearer told the BBC.

“They want their club to compete, they want their club to move forward, that’s why yesterday was such a disappointing day.”

Retail tycoon Ashley is a deeply unpopular figure among the Newcastle support for his treatment of fans and an unwillingness to invest on the field to improve the club’s fortunes.

Newcastle have finished 13th in the Premier League table for the past two seasons and have twice been relegated to the Championship during Ashley’s 13-year reign.

“We can only hope and pray that new owners come in at some stage and take the club back to where it belongs because that’s what the fans of Newcastle deserve,” said Shearer.

China star Wu Lei ‘turns down Premier League’ to stay at Espanyol

Shanghai (AFP) – Wu Lei contemplated “giving up and returning to China” after testing positive for coronavirus in March and says he turned down offers from Germany and England to remain at Espanyol.

The 28-year-old forward is China’s best-known player and there is intense interest back home in what he plans to do following Espanyol’s relegation from La Liga.

Wu told Xinhua news agency by telephone from Spain that he intends to stay to help spearhead Chinese-owned Espanyol’s bid to bounce back into Spain’s top flight next season.

“It’s true that some clubs from Premier League, Bundesliga and La Liga contacted me,” the Chinese international told state-run Xinhua in an interview released Friday.

“But I know what I truly want. The decision (to stay with Espanyol) was made for multiple reasons both on and off the pitch.

“My family feels comfortable living in the city of Barcelona. My teammates, club staff and fans have always been nice to me.”

Wu, who moved to Spain from Shanghai SIPG in January 2019, has scored 11 goals in 65 appearances for Catalonia-based Espanyol — including in his first game back when football resumed in June from the virus.

Although he was never seriously unwell — the Chinese Football Association said he had only mild symptoms — Wu said that falling ill with coronavirus was a psychological blow.

“Honestly, when I was tested positive for COVID-19 in March, I was in a bad mood and even thought about giving up and returning to China,” said Wu.

“That period was the most difficult time of this year. My wife, who also tested positive for the virus, suffered a lot.

“Luckily, we went through it in the end, which made me cherish more my family and my health.”

Arteta hopes FA Cup win convinces Aubameyang to stay at Arsenal

London (AFP) – Mikel Arteta believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at Arsenal could be influenced by the outcome of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Chelsea as the Gunners try to convince the Gabon international to extend his contract.

Aubameyang, 31, has just one year left on his deal at the Emirates and given Arsenal’s financial predicament, it would make sense to sell in the close season if he cannot be convinced to prolong his contract.

Despite his strike rate as one of Europe’s deadliest forwards over the past six years, Aubameyang has just two major trophies to his name with cup wins at St Etienne and Borussia Dortmund.

Arteta captained Arsenal to two FA Cup wins during his playing career and believes experiencing that success could convince Aubameyang to trust the club are going in the right direction.

“No, I don’t have that feeling,” said Arteta on Friday when asked if Saturday’s clash could be Aubameyang’s final game for the club.

“It’s a package at the end. You need to have a lot of ingredients on the table to persuade a player of his level to be at this football club.

“Don’t forget that he still has a contract here with us. We want to do it in a long-term, at the moment he’s with us and he should be really proud of where he is.

“Winning a trophy helps to really believe and feel ‘wow’, I want more of these moments. If you are wearing the armband and able to lift that cup, it is such a moment. This is going to help for sure.”

Winning a trophy in his first season in management would also be a huge bonus for Arteta to prove he can restore Arsenal’s former glories.

“It generates trust when you win titles,” he added. “It generates moments when together you go through some good emotions.

“It brings everybody together, you have memories, there is a lot of things about winning a trophy that is so positive for any group and when you are in a process of (development) that makes it even more important, so we have a great opportunity tomorrow, let’s go for it.”

Beating their London rivals behind closed doors at Wembley would also ensure Arsenal do not miss out on European football next season for the first time since 1995/96 by qualifying for the Europa League.

“It’s a final, the only focus is on winning that trophy tomorrow,” said Arteta.

“Financially it would be really helpful and on the sporting side, to play European football for this club is a must.”

Premier League looking at clinical passports solution for fans’ return

London (AFP) – Clinical passports may be the solution in getting fans back to football stadia, the Premier League’s chief executive Richard Masters said on Friday.

Masters says having defied the sceptics in resuming and bringing the season to a climax — behind closed doors — after the hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the next step was to resolve the supporters’ conundrum.

The 2020/21 Premier League and lower-tier English Football League begin their new seasons on September 12 and Masters said in a column for The Tiimes that every solution was being examined to give fans the chance to watch their team again.

“We are also willing to see how we can support the development of “clinical passports” —- an app-based system that looks at all symptoms and other COVID-19 contributing factors -— as well as other measures,” he wrote.

Masters said the EPL was seeking to work with local councils on transport solutions.

“We are considering all areas of a match day, from ticketing solutions, stadium seating allocation configuration and timed entries, to temperature checks and an in-seat food and drink service for fans,” said Masters.

“We will work with local authorities and clubs to seek solutions to local transport challenges such as introducing additional car parking and secure bicycle spaces and implementing park-and-walk schemes.”

Masters said bringing fans back was vital not only for their teams on the pitch but for a variety of reasons off it too.

“The importance of fans is not only related to the match-day experience and team performance,” he said.

“Without them, there is also a significant financial impact on clubs at all levels of the game, and their cities, towns and communities.”

Masters, though, urged patience as the solutions will not be found quickly.

“There is still a lot to be done, and it will not happen overnight,” he said.

“We must test and prove what is possible, in tandem with the authorities, within a framework that is flexible and can adapt to fast-moving circumstances and developing expertise.”

A number of sports events have been held with a limited number of fans in England in the last few days.

The Oval welcomed one thousand cricket spectators last Sunday, snooker’s world championship will have several hundred spectators in the indoor arena when it begins on Friday and the Glorious Goodwood racing Festival reaches a climax on Saturday with 4,000 spectators permitted.

Lazio forward Immobile set for coronation as Europe’s goal king

Milan (AFP) – Lazio’s Ciro Immobile is set to join an exclusive club as the highest-scoring player in Europe this season.

In a decade dominated by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the underrated Italian is near assured of winning the European Golden Shoe for the continent’s top scorer.

From Messi, to Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah, Robert Lewandowski and Erling Braut Haaland, nobody in Europe has managed to keep pace with the Naples-born player.

Immobile overtook Bayern Munich striker Lewandowski with his 35th goal against Brescia midweek, and will close his campaign against Napoli on Saturday.

Juventus star Ronaldo, on 31 goals, is four behind before the Serie A champions’ final game against Roma in Turin, in which he may not even play with the Champions League looming.

It would not be the first time that 30-year-old Immobile has topped the Serie A goal-scoring charts, having won the ‘Capocannoniere’ twice before in 2014 and 2018.

But he would become just the third Italian winner of the European Golden Shoe after Roma’s Francesco Totti (26) in 2007 and Luca Toni for Fiorentina in 2006 (31).

Another two goals on Saturday would also see him surpass Gonzalo Higuain’s Serie A record of 36 goals, set playing for Napoli in the 2015-16 season.

“I am only sorry that I cannot celebrate these numbers with the fans,” said Immobile, nicknamed ‘King Ciro’ in the capital, but whose career before arriving in Rome had been erratic.

Success has not followed onto the national team, where he has scored ten goals in 39 games, taking the brunt of criticism after Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Immobile started his career at Juventus, where he made just three appearances before a breakthrough loan season in 2011-2012 at Pescara where his 28 goals lifted the Serie B side into the top flight.

He couldn’t follow up his form the following season with Genoa, but had more success with Torino where he scored 22 goals in 33 appearances to win his first Serie A top scorer award.

An 18 million euros ($22 million) move to the Bundesliga followed, but he scored just three times in 24 appearances for Borussia Dortmund, followed by an unsuccessful six-month spell at Sevilla.

– Lazio revival –

But scoring is something he has done with stunning regularity since joining Lazio in the summer of 2016, at the same time as coach Simone Inzaghi.

He has has flourished in the Inzaghi system playing alongside Luis Alberto and Joaquin Correa, and midfielders Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Marco Parolo, scoring 102 times in 141 Serie A appearances.

Lazio can thank Immobile for nearly half of their 78 league goals, as he slotted in 14 from the penalty spot.

The title challenge fell off after the lockdown with four defeats in their first five July games as Immobile conceded: “I have not been myself, I need to get back to being calm.”

He has scored six goals in his last four games as Lazio, already assured of a return to the Champions League after 13 seasons, target a second-place finish.

“It is a great achievement for him, but also for the whole team,” said Inzaghi.

“And then there is Ronaldo, with four goals behind, let’s see what will happen.

“Ciro’s records would be a nice prize for everyone. He leapt over Lewandowski, he broke every record, he’s just missing a goal to reach Higuain.”

Celtic quest for historic 10-in-a-row piles pressure on Rangers

London (AFP) – Celtic launch their quest for a record 10th consecutive Scottish Premiership title this weekend, with Rangers manager Steven Gerrard under intense pressure to stop them.

Nearly five months after the coronavirus shut down Scottish football, the 2020/21 season starts on Saturday with the battle for supremacy in Glasgow as fierce as ever despite the empty stands.

Celtic and Rangers have each achieved nine titles in a row before, but neither Celtic’s European Cup-winning side that won nine titles from 1965 to 1974, nor Rangers cast of stars that reigned from 1988 to 1997, could complete a full decade of dominance.

The current Celtic squad look well set to succeed where those two great sides fell short as the economic consequences of the pandemic have left little chance for others to catch up.

“Going for the 10, it’s historic, it’s momentous and very special,” said Celtic manager Neil Lennon. “I know it’s been on the tip of a lot of our supporters’ tongues and we’ll be going all out to do it.”

Celtic have been quiet in the transfer market other than the £4.5 million ($5.9 million) signing of Greek international goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas.

However, unlike recent seasons when Moussa Dembele, Stuart Armstrong and Kieran Tierney departed, they have so far kept hold of key players, despite admiring glances from some of Europe’s heavyweight clubs for Odsonne Edouard and Kristoffer Ajer.

– Gerrard challenge –

For Rangers boss Gerrard, the time has come to prove he can achieve as a manager what he failed to do in his storied playing career at Liverpool — win a league title.

No Rangers manager has ever failed to win a trophy in his first two seasons in charge and been given the opportunity for a third.

Circumstances have given Gerrard that chance. Even the historically demanding Rangers support acknowledged the gap the former England captain had to bridge when he took the job in May 2018.

Gerrard has made the blue side of Glasgow a respected force in Europe again at Europa League level and beaten Celtic home and away in one-off matches.

But when the COVID-19 pandemic ended the 2019/20 Scottish season, Rangers were 13 points adrift of their bitter rivals at the top of the table.

The squabbling that engulfed the Scottish game as Rangers sought an independent investigation into the vote that saw league tables decided on points-per-game highlighted the landmark staging post that is nine-in-a-row in Scotland.

Rangers have turned a loan deal for Ianis Hagi, son of Romanian great Gheorghe Hagi, into a permanent transfer and fleshed out their squad with the additions of goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin and defenders Calvin Bassey and Leon Balogun on free transfers.

But the club were already relying on investors to cover a loss of £11 million in Gerrard’s first season before coronavirus closed stadiums.

“We need more,” Gerrard said after completing an impressive pre-season unbeaten with notable victories over Lyon and Nice. “I have told the club that. I’ve been honest and open with what I feel we need.

“In terms of where we are at from a financial point of view, they are questions for other people — but I have made it quite clear that we need to add to what we’ve got.

“We need to add players into the 11 to make us stronger and then, naturally, that will make the squad stronger.”

To bolster Gerrard’s squad in more than one area of the pitch, Rangers might have to cash in on Alfredo Morelos, with Lille interested in the Colombian striker.

Morelos has been Rangers’ top scorer for the past three seasons, but his time in Glasgow has also been peppered with seven red cards.

Gerrard faces a difficult balancing act but it is one he must get right or Celtic will stand alone in the history books.

FA Cup final gives Arteta chance to prove Arsenal are going places

London (AFP) – Mikel Arteta insists even winning the FA Cup final against Chelsea on Saturday will not salvage Arsenal’s season, but a trophy just eight months into his first managerial role will strengthen the impression the Gunners now have the right man in charge to right the ship.

Arteta won the FA Cup as captain when Arsenal ended a nine-year trophy drought in 2014.

Yet despite winning the competition twice more in the six years since, standards have continued to slip at the Emirates since Arsene Wenger’s departure two years ago.

Despite an upturn since Arteta’s appointment in December, eighth place in the Premier League was the Londoners worst league finish in 15 years.

“For me this club deserves the best and you have to be fighting for every title,” said the Spaniard on the prospect of silverware and a place in the Europa League next season redeeming a miserable campaign.

“Obviously after everything that happened, if we are able to win the final and qualify for Europe, we can say it’s okay. But it’s not the level for this football club.”

The Europa League may be the poor relation to the riches and prestige of the Champions League, but failure to qualify for European football at all for the first time since the 1995/96 season would be a further blow to Arsenal’s already fragile finances.

Due to the lack of Champions League football, the Gunners posted a loss of £27 million ($35 million) in the 2018/2019 campaign for the first time in 17 years.

That was despite generating nearly £40 million in TV and prize money from a run to the Europa League final and before the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic saw the club’s playing and coaching staff agree a 12.5 percent pay cut.

Victories over Liverpool and former employers Manchester City in the space of four days earlier this month have given Arteta plenty of credit in the bank from the Arsenal support.

But questions remain over how much he can do to restore the club’s former glories if he is not backed in the transfer market.

“The gap is enormous,” said Arteta after beating Liverpool despite having just 33 percent possession and three shots to the Premier League champions’ 24.

“You know how you build those squads, there is no magic.

“You need to improve with quality players and you need bigger squads to compete in this competition.”

Before looking to recruit for a rebuild, Arsenal also have to convince their outstanding talent to stay put.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was just one goal behind Jamie Vardy in the battle for the Premier League Golden Boot despite playing in a struggling side and it was his two goals that saw off City in the semi-final to make it back to Wembley on Saturday.

The former Borussia Dortmund forward has just one year left on his contract and given Arsenal’s financial predicament, it would make business sense to sell in the close season if Aubameyang cannot be convinced to extend his contract.

“It is our responsiblity for make him feel this is the right next step in his career,” said Arteta.

“In order to do that he needs to feel valued, feel that he belongs to us and we want him and he needs to believe we can take this club forward the way we want to do. He is an extremely key player in that.”

For one of Europe’s top strikers, Aubameyang has precious few medals with only a French League Cup at St Etienne and one German Cup with Dortmund to his name.

In what could be his final game for the club, a trophy at Wembley could go a long way to convincing Aubameyang to buy into Arteta’s project and Arsenal’s American owners, Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, to do likewise in the transfer market in the coming months.

Five talking points before Serie A season finale

Milan (AFP) – Juventus have already sealed their ninth Serie A title in a row, but the league’s single-season scoring record could yet be broken and the battle against the drop is going down to the wire.

Here AFP sport looks at five talking points before the final round of Italian top-flight games this weekend.

Immobile targets record

Ciro Immobile needs just one more goal to equal the scoring record for a single campaign as Lazio make the short journey to Napoli for their final game.

The 30-year-old forward already has 35 goals and can  match Gonzalo Higuain’s record of 36 goals, made playing for Napoli in the 2015-16 season.

Immobile is already basically assured of winning the European Golden Shoe for the continent’s top scorer, having overtaken Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski’s tally of 34 against Brescia midweek.

Lazio are fourth, but still in the running for second place, while seventh-placed Napoli have nothing to play for in the league except defending the record of their former teammate Higuain.

Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli are also warming up for their meeting with Barcelona in the Champions League last 16, return leg.

Trio race for second place

Three teams — Inter Milan, Atalanta and Lazio — are in the running for second place.

Inter and Atalanta will go head-to-head in Bergamo with Lazio’s last game at Napoli.

Antonio Conte’s Inter have 79 points, one point ahead of both Atalanta and Lazio, with the northeners ahead of the Romans, who they held 3-3 in the Stadio Olimpico and beat 3-2 at home this season.

“We’re masters of our destiny, second place depends only on us,” said Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini.

Atalanta are also preparing for their Champions League quarter-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain next month in Lisbon.

They could beat last season’s best-ever finish of third, which gave them Champions League qualification for the first time. This season they are in stunning form, are unbeaten since January 20 and just two off the mark of 100 league goals.

Tired Juve eye U23 team

Maurizio Sarri said he might field his Under-23 team, now coached by former Italy great Andrea Pirlo, in their final game against Roma in Turin after falling to a miserable midweek defeat at Cagliari days after sealing their ninth consecutive Serie A title.

Juve are preparing for their Champions League last 16, return leg against Lyon, where they trail 1-0, and are missing key players such as Paulo Dybala and Douglas Costa through injury.

“We are the only ones in Europe who have played five games in 12 days, the league has created big problems for us,” said Sarri.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo’s hopes of finishing the season as top scorer look over as the 35-year-old trails Immobile by four goals.

Relegation scrap

Lecce and Genoa will face Parma and Hellas Verona respectively at the weekend hoping to avoid joining Brescia and SPAL down in Serie B.

Genoa, in 17th, are just one-point ahead of Lecce, who occupy the final relegation berth.

If both teams finish equal on points, Genoa will stay in Serie A, with Lecce heading back to the second tier after just one season in the top flight.

Ibra turning clock back at Milan

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and AC Milan take on mid-table outfit Cagliari looking to cap an impressive run since football returned to Italy from the coronavirus lockdown.

Only Manchester City with 34 goals have scored more than Milan (32) in Europe’s top leagues since the restart.

Ibrahimovic, 38, has scored six times since the lockdown, including four in the last three games, with the club unbeaten in eleven Serie A matches, their best run since April 2013 (14).

The ‘Rossoneri’ have also scored at least two goals in six consecutive Serie A away matches, their best run since 1964 (nine).

Fixtures (all times GMT)

Saturday

Brescia v Sampdoria (1600), Atalanta v Inter Milan, Juventus v Roma, AC Milan v Cagliari, Napoli v Lazio (all 1845)

Sunday

SPAL v Fiorentina (1600), Bologna v Torino, Genoa v Hellas Verona, Lecce v Parma, Sassuolo v Udinese (all 1845)

Coach quits Brazil club over keeper’s femicide conviction

Sao Paulo (AFP) – The coach of the women’s team of Brazilian football club Rio Branco quit Thursday in protest at the men’s team’s decision to sign star goalkeeper Bruno, who was convicted in 2013 of murdering his girlfriend.

Bruno Fernandes das Dores de Souza — the player’s full name — was one of Brazil’s most promising young stars, but his career was cut short in 2010 when he was arrested on suspicion of murdering a former lover with whom he had a child.

Bruno, now 35, was convicted three years later.

Although he is currently out of prison pending his appeal, Rio Branco women’s coach Rose Costa said his conviction should have made signing him taboo.

“My life story as a woman and a professional prevent me from remaining at Rio Branco,” she wrote on Instagram, announcing her resignation with immediate effect.

“I need to respect my own beliefs, including that we educate by example.”

Rio Branco, which is based in the northern state of Acre, plays in the Brazilian fourth division.

At the time of his arrest, Bruno was the starting goalkeeper for top-flight club Flamengo, and had racked up a series of impressive performances.

But his career was derailed by his court case.

He was sentenced to 20 years and nine months for murdering Eliza Samudio, a 25-year-old model, and kidnapping their son.

He was released in 2017 pending appeal and signed with the club Boa Esporte, but was then re-arrested when the decision to free him was overturned in court.

Released again, he briefly played last year for third-division side Pocos de Caldas.

Rio Branco announced his signing Sunday, triggering immediate controversy.

The club’s lone sponsor, a supermarket chain, announced it was suspending its relationship with the team over the decision.

With a deep-rooted culture of machismo and high levels of violence against women, Brazil leads Latin America in femicides.

One is committed in the country every seven hours, according to a study by news site G1 in March.

For soccer fans, competition among streaming providers has pushed down prices, helping consumers save a lot of money. As a result, watching soccer has never been cheaper than it is now,

To simplify which are the best soccer streaming options for you, World Soccer Talk has created a Soccer Mega Pack that includes trusted and reliable legal streaming options that will give you the majority of games you want to watch.

• MLS
• USL
• And more.

With the Soccer Mega Pack, you’ll get:

In total, you’ll get more than 10 top leagues/competitions as well as more than 40 more from around the world — all for less than Sling Blue, fuboTV, YouTube TV and other streaming packages.

To start your Soccer Mega Pack, click the four buttons above. The first 7-days of Peacock Premium and Fanatiz are free. Plus you get 30 days of CBS All Access for free when you use the promo code PLAY at checkout. And you can immediately start streaming ESPN+ with all of the content it offers.

Here’s the math for the $23.97/month Soccer Mega Pack: $4.99/month for ESPN+, $5.99/month for CBS All Access, $7.99/month for Fanatiz and $5/month for Peacock Premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What’s the purpose of creating the Mega Pack?

A: We often get questions from our readers and followers about what’s the most cost-effective service. The ones that are the most comprehensive (fuboTV, YouTubeTV and Hulu + Live TV) are more than $55 per month. Our Soccer Mega Pack is less than half that cost.

Q: What does the Soccer Mega Pack solve?

A: It simplifies all of the choices available and narrows them down to the four most cost effective options for the most popular leagues and competitions available.

For example, per the tweet below, the Soccer Mega Pack solves his question with all of the leagues included except for Liga MX (where many games are available via the free-to-air Univision, which can be watched for free with an indoor HD antenna). No CNN, but most soccer fans won’t miss that.

Long gone are the days when FOX Soccer Match Pass was the only paid streaming service in town and could charge $20 per month for a small selection of games each week.

Q: As a user on Reddit asked, “So I can get the entire EPL, Champions League, Europa, Bundesliga, Serie A, Eredivisie, NWSL, and a lot of MLS for $11 a month? I don’t remember this golden time where you could get anything like that not behind a paywall.” Is that correct?

A: Not quite, but it’s close. The $11 per month rate is for CBS All Access and ESPN+. But those two won’t include the Premier League. Peacock Premium, at $5 per month, will include nearly 50% of Premier League matches exclusively each season. For the games it doesn’t include, you can watch the ones on NBC for free with an indoor HD antenna.

Q: How do I get the Soccer Mega Pack?

A: Click on the links below to the streaming services and sign up for the four services (three of them include free trials).

Q: What about entertainment options?

A: You can get all four streaming services plus Disney+ and Hulu for a total of $31.97 per month. Just select the Disney+ Bundle to make sure you get Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu instead of just ESPN+.

Q: What leagues and competitions does the Soccer Mega Pack include, in full?

A: It’s a long list and it changes as rights are added and subtracted. But as of press time, it includes all of the following: Premier League, UEFA Champions League, LaLiga, MLS, Europa League, Bundesliga, Serie A, FA Cup, UEFA Nations League, EFL Championship, League One, League Two, League Cup, Leagues Cup, US Open Cup, USL, International Champions Cup, Coppa Italia, Supercoppa Italiana, Eredivisie, Danish Superliga, Chinese Super League, Indian Super League, Australian A-League, Sweden’s Allsvenskan, FA Community Shield, Copa Libertadores, Argentina Primera Division, Ligue 1, Copa Sudamericana, Copa Argentina, Copa de la Superliga, Portuguese Primeira Liga, Ecuadorian League, Copa de Ecuador, Bolivian League, Turkish Super Lig, Liga Águila, Copa Águila, CAF Champions League, CAF Confederations Cup, Ascenso MX, KNVB Dutch Cup, Coupe de la Ligue, Coupe de France, Trophee des Champions, Uruguayan league, Colombian Categoría Primera A, Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, international friendlies, UEFA Super Cup and UEFA Europa Conference League.

Q: What does CBS All Access include?

A: CBS All Access includes every single UEFA Champions League and Europa League game, no matter whether it’s on television or not. It also includes more than 10,000 episodes of CBS content, original programming and live streams of your local CBS network and more.

Q: Any more questions?

A: Let us know in the comments section below and we’ll do our best to answer all of them.
