Griezmann attempting to find his feet on rocky ground at Barca

Barcelona (AFP) – Antoine Griezmann said he knew it would be tough settling in at Barcelona but it may have proven harder than he thought.

Barca play at home to Inter Milan on Wednesday looking for lift-off in the Champions League after a goalless draw against Borussia Dortmund made for an underwhelming start to their latest bid for success in Europe.

Griezmann also has something to prove after two steady but unspectacular months, elevated by moments rather than the consistency Ernesto Valverde would have hoped for when the Frenchman’s 120-million euro release clause was activated last summer.

“Against Bilbao he was not as involved as we would like,” Valverde said at the start of the season. “But it is also up to the team to allow our strikers to participate more.”

When Griezmann scored twice in the next game, against Real Betis, before tossing glitter above his head at Camp Nou, it felt like he had made his big introduction and not just because of the theatrics.

But five La Liga games have since brought only one more goal and assist while a handful of rather muted displays have left a sense of a player finding his feet, despite excelling in La Liga for the past nine seasons.

After last week’s win over Villarreal, Griezmann was asked about his start at Barcelona. “It’s different,” he said. “It’s a different type of football, a different position and I knew it was going to be difficult to adjust.

“But I feel like I’m improving every game and that’s it. Three goals, it’s not bad right? I can do better but I just arrived. I work for the team and if I can score or assist, even better.”

Griezmann has reason to defend himself. He joined a team that after five games had posted its lowest points total in 25 years, with last season’s collapse against Liverpool still lingering, not least for Valverde, whose future is never secure.

He also arrived as one of the world’s premium strikers but found his new club pursuing Neymar for the duration of the summer, as if the Brazilian might add something he could not.

There were relationships to repair too, with Barcelona’s fans and players, after Griezmann not only turned them down 12 months before but embarassed them, by announcing his decision in a documentary.

– Inconsistency –

“I’ve spent very little time with him to be honest,” Lionel Messi told Diario Sport last month. “Since I returned, I’ve been injured and training on my own.

Nagelsmann, Werner on the rise for ambitious Leipzig

Berlin (AFP) – With coach Julian Nagelsmann touted as the next Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola and striker Timo Werner providing the goals, ambitious RB Leipzig target a home Champions League win over Lyon on Wednesday in their bid to reach the last 16.

Leipzig flew out of the blocks a fortnight ago when Germany international Werner, 23, scored twice in a 2-1 win at Benfica to top Group G, while Lyon drew 1-1 at home to Zenit St Peterburg.

“It’s not like we’re here to make up the numbers, we want to get out of the group,” said Werner who targets home victories over Lyon, Zenit, and Benfica.

“If we win those games, and we can beat anyone at home, then we will almost have a foot in the last 16. That has to be our goal.”

Ambitious words for an ambitious club during only their second Champions League campaign.

“The key is that we have more experienced players on the pitch, who know what it’s all about,” assured attacker Emil Forsberg.

Their 2017-18 competition debut ended in disappointment when they finished third in the group, dropping to the Europa League where they reached the quarter finals.

– Points to prove –

Nagelsmann, 32, and Werner have points to prove against Lyon after the harsh reality check of Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat by Schalke cost them top spot in the Bundesliga.

Despite his tally of seven goals so far this term, Werner has not scored in the three games since the Benfica win, while by his own admission, Nagelsmann lost his composure against Schalke.

“You could tell that he’s a guy who doesn’t like to lose,” said captain Willi Orban.

“That was not typical RB football”.

Werner and Nagelsmann epitomise the club’s aspirations to consistently challenge in the Bundesliga and become a force in Europe, backed by energy drinks firm Red Bull.

Werner could have spoken for Nagelsmann in admitting “I am not world class yet, no, and I’m working on getting to that level.”

His role model is Robert Lewandowski and persistent rumours suggest Bayern Munich have ear-marked Werner, who signed a new contract in August, to eventually replace their star striker.

Leipzig are only in their fourth year in Germany’s top tier and this is Nagelsmann’s first season in charge.

The club regard him as a rising coaching star who is set to reach the same elite level as Liverpool’s Klopp or Manchester City’s Guardiola.

Conte’s back-to-basics style paying off at Inter ahead of Barca trip

Milan (AFP) – Antonio Conte has returned to Italian football in style with Inter Milan flying high under his back-to-basics guidance, ahead of a Champions League trip to Barcelona that will test the Serie A leaders’ continental credentials.

Conte’s side stretched their perfect league start to six wins from six for the first time in 53 years at the weekend with a 3-1 win at Sampdoria that came despite having to play most of the second half a man down.

They are two points ahead of fierce rivals Juventus as they await a top-of-the-table clash at the San Siro on Sunday.

Meanwhile Inter head for Catalonia on Wednesday off the back of a shaky start in Group F, a 1-1 draw against Slavia Prague salvaged late after a below-par performance that contrasted sharply with their domestic form.

Conte — reportedly the highest-paid coach in Italy with a salary of 10 million euros ($10.8m) a year — believes his side are flourishing because he simplifies the game.

“I am a coach who always gives a precise idea of football to his team. I seem to set the trend in tactics,” said the former Chelsea and Juventus coach.

“My football has always been organised, we have an idea and work hard on a range of scenarios.

“All our performances this season have shown quality and organisation, but mentality makes the difference in getting out of tricky situations.”

Helenio Herrera was the last man to lead Inter to win six straight matches from the start of a league season back in 1966-1967, the three-time Serie A winner having also established them as a continental force with European Cup wins in 1964 and 1965.

Conte is bidding to claim the club’s first league title since 2010, the year they won an historic treble under rival coach Jose Mourinho.

“We must now press the reset button, focus on Barcelona at Camp Nou,” insisted Conte, whose last trip to Barcelona with Chelsea ended in a 3-0 defeat in March 2018.

“We’re getting into the right frame of mind, but we sill have to grow a lot. We’re newborns in this project.”

– ‘Newborns’ –

Conte has remodelled the club he took over after a rollercoaster two years under predecessor Luciano Spalletti — who brought Inter back to the Champions League on the final day of each of the last two seasons — bringing in 11 newcomers in the summer.

Salzburg’s youngster Haaland set to shine at Anfield

Oslo (AFP) – Salzburg’s red-hot teenage striker Erling Braut Haaland, will have the chance to measure himself against Liverpool’s dazzling collection of attackers on Wednesday, if he is fit to play.

The Austrian club’s sporting director Christoph Freund said on Sunday that the 19-year-old has been ill and may not feature against the European champions at Anfield but there will be many beyond the confines of Merseyside who pray that he is wrong.

After an explosive start to Haaland’s Champions League career, fans want to see more of the Norwegian.

“He’s going to become one of the best strikers in the world,” said Salzburg team-mate Maximilian Woeber. “He’s just phenomenal.”

Haaland set the first round of Champions League games alight when he hit a first-half hat-trick as Salzburg pulverised Genk 6-2 to top Group E ahead of Napoli, who beat Liverpool on the same night.

At 19 years and 58 days, Haaland became the third youngest man to score a hat-trick in the Champions League since its revamp in 1992.

Raul was just 18 years and 114 days when he did it in 1995 for Real Madrid against Ferencvaros while Wayne Rooney was 18 years and 340 days when he marked his debut in the competition with a treble for Manchester United against Fenerbahce in September 2004.

Imposing Haaland, who stands 1.94m tall, has been in scintillating form since moving from Molde to Salzburg in January, has scored 17 times in 10 appearances.

In May in the under-20 World Cup, he hammered nine goals in one match as Norway humiliated Honduras 12-0.

In spite of his record and his undoubted potential, Haaland is not a regular starter for Salzburg.

Five days after his star turn against Genk, he was on the bench at Linz in the Austrian League. He was not even in the squad for the two subsequent wins over Austria Vienna, one in the cup and one in the league.

– Someone has to replace Zlatan –

The young gun is just as confident in his abilities as his teammates are.

Asked to name his favourite player by Norwegian TV he answered, with a smile: “I have to say ‘it’s me'”, before adding a slight caveat.

“Zlatan Ibrahimovic is the biggest one. He is Scandinavian, so someone has to take over from him,” he said.

His profile is inevitably attracting interest from Europe’s wealthiest clubs.

“All my life, I have dreamed of playing for one of the best clubs in the world, and I particularly like English football,” he said.

Sudan’s first ever women’s club football league begins

Khartoum (AFP) – Sudan’s first ever women’s club football league kicked off Monday, with two teams clashing at a Khartoum stadium as crowds of fans and diplomats cheered.

The championship, which involves 21 clubs, would have seemed unlikely just months ago when long time Islamist ruler Omar al-Bashir was in power.

The first club match was played between Tahadi and Difaain in the capital on Monday. Matches are also scheduled for Madani, Al-Obeid and Kadugli.

“Civilian rule, Civilian rule,” chanted the crowd as the first match between the two teams began.

Crowds clapped and whistled, with many also chanting “Kandaka, Kandaka,” referring to ancient Nubian queens.

The match was attended by Sudan’s new Minister of Sport Wala Essam and some Sudanese and foreign diplomats.

“This is a historical game not only for women’s sport but for Sudan,” Essam told reporters.

“We will give special attention to women’s sport and women’s football.”

The start of the women’s club football league comes amid expectations that the current three-year transition period will see liberal policies implemented across the country, including measures to promote freedom of speech, women’s rights, sport and arts.

Sudan joined FIFA in 1948. In 1957, Sudan co-founded the Confederation of African Football with Egypt, Ethiopia and South Africa at a meeting in Khartoum.

But women’s football has faced an uphill fight since the country adopted Islamic sharia law in 1983, six years before Bashir seized power in an Islamist-backed coup.

Bashir was ousted by the army in a palace coup on April 11 on the back of nationwide protests against his iron-fisted rule.

A new joint civilian-military ruling body, called the sovereign council, is governing of the country for a transition period of 39 months.

The 11-member council has six civilians including two women.

FIFA order Cardiff to pay Nantes first instalment of Emiliano Sala transfer

Lausanne (AFP) – Cardiff City must pay French club Nantes an initial six million euros ($6.5 million) in their dispute over the payment of the transfer fee for Emiliano Sala, FIFA said on Monday.

The amount corresponds to the first instalment of the 17 million-euro fee Cardiff had agreed to pay Nantes before Sala died in a plane crash on January 21 while travelling to join his new club.

Cardiff had previously resolved not to pay any of the money even though the transfer had been completed before the accident.

In relation to the remainder of the initially agreed fee, FIFA told AFP: “For confidentiality reasons, we cannot comment at this stage on potential future instalments or other conditions of the transfer agreement.”

The announcement from world football’s governing body followed a meeting by its Players’ Status Committee.

In a statement, FIFA said it had “never lost sight of the specific and unique circumstances of this tragic situation during its deliberations on the dispute at stake.”

Both clubs can appeal the decision to the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Nantes had previously appealed in February over Cardiff’s failure to pay the 17 million euros they said was owed.

A Cardiff spokesperson said the club “acknowledges the decision” but added that they “will be seeking further clarification from FIFA on the exact meaning of their statement in order to make an informed decision on our next steps.”

The plane Sala was travelling on came down in the English Channel during a night-time flight.

His body was recovered, but that of the pilot, David Ibbotson, has never been found.

A report by Britain’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch in August said that Sala and the pilot were likely exposed to “potentially fatal” levels of carbon monoxide on the plane.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, Cardiff were relegated from the Premier League after just one season back in the top flight.

Winners and losers of Bundesliga switching from FOX to ESPN+

The worst kept secret about the Bundesliga in the United States has now been officially confirmed. Beginning in the summer of 2020, ESPN+ will be the exclusive broadcaster of the German league in the United States.

It means that the five-year grip that FOX Sports had on the United States is coming to an end. That news will be celebrated by most, but there will be some that may be saddened by the situation given that FOX Sports despite all of their inconsistencies did elevate the Bundesliga to a select number of games across free-to-air television.

Due to FOX Sports making a global decision to acquire the rights to the Bundesliga for the 2015 season onwards, it appeared that there wasn’t much buy-in to the idea from FOX Sports in the United States. Over the course of the last five years, FOX’s coverage of the Bundesliga has been mostly frustrating due to a lack of promotion and the fact that the broadcaster used the Bundesliga as filler material when it didn’t have NASCAR, golf or other commitments. But at times, when FOX appeared to be committed, the coverage gave us some highs including Ian Joy’s analysis, Keith Costigan’s commentary and games on the big FOX network.

Looking back at the last five years and considering the future of the Bundesliga on ESPN+, a deal like this isn’t so simple. Taking that into consideration, here are the winners and losers from this seismic deal:

Losers

1) FOX Sports is out of the European club soccer business. When FOX Sports will televise their final game of the 2019/20 Bundesliga season next May 2020, the broadcaster will no longer have any rights to European club soccer leagues or competitions.

It means that in the space of two years, FOX Sports have lost the rights to the Bundesliga, UEFA Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and Scottish Premiership.

And remember that FOX Sports used to have the rights to the Premier League.

The only club soccer leagues FOX Sports will have the rights to are Major League Soccer and Liga MX. For hardcore soccer fans who prefer watching club soccer from overseas, FOX Sports will be irrelevant.

2) FOX Soccer Match Pass. Surely the loss of the Bundesliga will be the death knell for the FOX Soccer Match Pass streaming service. If not, it’ll mean that FOX Soccer Match Pass will limp along with an underwhelming amount of rights (select MLS games, rugby and niche soccer competitions) with a price point that is the most expensive in the industry ($20/month).

While the future doesn’t look bright for FOX Soccer Match Pass, imagine what the service could have been if it had decided to make the long-term investment that ESPN+ is making.

3) Legacy television networks. The exodus of consumers from their cable and satellite packages to cutting the cord and streaming the content they want continues to increase. And with deals like this one where the vast majority of games will only be available exclusively online, the movement from television to streaming continues to increase.

It means that some consumers will be left behind if they don’t adapt to the new changes. But it’s the way that sports and entertainment is moving. And soccer is a trailblazer is this area.

4) Bundesliga. Depending which side of the fence you sit on, you may see plenty of advantages and disadvantages to the Bundesliga signing the deal with ESPN+. But the fact of the matter is that the Bundesliga — no matter what the league may say — will have worse distribution on ESPN+ than it had on FOX Sports.

With ESPN’s new deal, the broadcast of the Bundesliga will be very similar to how Serie A is treated in the United States. There will be one game a week that will be shown across either ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS or ESPNU. And every single other match will be available live on ESPN+.

As with Serie A — and now the Bundesliga — there remains the distant possibility that a key game may end up on ABC. But, for the most part, FOX’s distribution of the Bundesliga reached greater numbers than what ESPN may reach. FOX’s over-the-air broadcasts of Bundesliga games on the big FOX network is greater than the flagship ESPN network. And even games on FS2 will reach more actual viewers of Bundesliga games on ESPN+.

With the Bundesliga, they’re making a long-term play that streaming is the future of watching soccer in the United States. It’s a smart decision, but in the short-term, it means that the Bundesliga will be less visible to mainstream sports fans in the United States.

5) FOX Soccer Plus will become more of a zombie channel than it is already. Whisper the words “FOX Soccer Plus” to sports fans in the United States, and you may get some quizzical looks. But if FOX Soccer Plus was almost irrelevant before, it’ll certainly become even less familiar beginning in the summer of 2020 when the Bundesliga will no longer be available on it.

FOX Soccer Plus has been a misnomer for years. With the exit of the Bundesliga, perhaps now is finally the time for FOX Sports to consider renaming the network to something less descriptive or what it could possibly become — FOX Rugby Channel.

6) The future of FOX’s talent. Without the Bundesliga, the amount of soccer coverage on FOX Sports after the summer of 2020 will be practically nothing. Yes, there’ll be the one to two MLS games on a Sunday night as well as an occasional Liga MX game on a weekend late at night. But outside the big competitions such as the World Cup, Women’s World Cup and Gold Cup, the soccer talent at FOX Sports will have almost no work available to them.

Sadly, that may mean that contracts will not be renewed or that talent will be hired on a project-by-project basis. After all, what’s the point of paying large salaries to talent who only have 1 or 2 gigs a week as well as a one-month tournament every two years?

Expect a lot of changes and cutbacks in the ranks at FOX Sports.

7) TUDN. In an interview with a TUDN executive last month, we discovered that TUDN was in discussions with the Bundesliga to renew the Spanish-language rights to the German top-flight league. Under the new agreement that ESPN has signed with the Bundesliga for the August 2020 season onwards, ESPN has acquired both the English-language and Spanish-language rights to the league.

More details will be forthcoming about Spanish-language rights, but presumably the match of the week will be on ESPN Deportes while the other games will be available in Spanish-language on ESPN+.

Winners

1) ESPN+. The streaming service from the self-proclaimed Worldwide Leader In Sports has gobbled up almost every single soccer rights package available in the past year. That includes the addition of Serie A, FA Cup, League Cup, Copa America, Championship, Coppa Italia, Eredivisie, International Champions Cup, US Open Cup, Chinese Super League and other leagues.

In that same timespan, FOX Soccer Match Pass has acquired nothing.

While the addition of the rights is a win for ESPN+, it also provides more value to ESPN+ subscribers who are getting more soccer coverage than ever before.

2) Bundesliga. By securing a six-year deal with ESPN, it means that the Bundesliga and ESPN have a long-term partnership to work together to grow the league’s popularity until the rights agreement ends in 2026 — right before the World Cup.

It gives ESPN an opportunity to work more closely with the Bundesliga to make a concerted effort to grow the league. While FOX Sports had the same opportunity to do so in the five years they worked together, ESPN has a much better idea of how to market soccer to sports fans than what FOX’s track record has shown.

3) Consumers. When the Bundesliga moves to ESPN+, it’ll be more affordable than ever for soccer fans to access their favorite league than ever before. At $4.99 per month, Bundesliga fans will have access to every game each week except for the Bundesliga Match of the Week that’ll be available on cable or satellite TV.

4) A new opportunity for talent. With ESPN’s coverage of Serie A, the broadcaster was able to elevate Mark Donaldson to the lead-commentator of the Serie A Match of the Week alongside co-commentator Matteo Bonetti who was hired from beIN SPORTS. With ESPN broadcasting the Bundesliga next season, there remains the possibility of a similar move for someone who an intimate knowledge of the German leagues. The obvious candidate would be Ian Joy as a co-commentator. But there’s plenty of talent already at ESPN who could step into the role.

Sarri says Juve need to ‘lighten up’ in Champions League quest

Turin (Italy) (AFP) – Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri believes his side need to enjoy themselves more if they are going to have any chance of ending their 24-year wait for the Champions League trophy.

The 60-year-old Sarri will oversee his first Champions League match at home in the Allianz Stadium on Tuesday.

Juventus host Bayer Leverkusen in their second Group D clash, having being held 2-2 at Atletico Madrid in their opener.

“The Champions League is really the top for a player and coach, but at the same time we should also have fun,” Sarri told a pre-match press conference in Turin.

“At the moment it’s difficult for Italian teams to be among the favourites. English teams are favourites for obvious reasons but we should be easier on ourselves.

“The idea is to really cheer up a little bit.

“Our goal is to go all the way until the Champions League final but it’s a competition that can only be determined in certain moments.

“I’m expecting a good result tomorrow.”

– Dangerous Leverkusen –

The eight-time reigning Italian champions are unbeaten so far this season.

They are up against a Bayer Leverkusen, who finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season, and are sixth this term.

The Germans slumped to a surprise 2-1 defeat at home against Lokomotiv Moscow in their opener.

Leverkusen won 3-1 the last time the two teams met in 2001-02, when the Germans reached the final.

Sarri said he would make his team selection after training on Monday, deciding who would play up front alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Playing Ronaldo, (Paulo) Dybala and (Gonzalo) Higuain all together from the start is a fascinating suggestion, but we are not ready yet for the level of balance required,” said Sarri.

“For now we could only try this solution for parts of the match.”

Leverkusen’s danger man could be 20-year-old German midfielder Kai Havertz, a player Sarri tipped to “become one of the most important players in Europe”.

“Over the last three matches we have definitely improved from all points of view,” said the former Chelsea coach.

“The last matches we had 21 balls that could turn into goals and we need to be more aggressive in the opponents’ area.”

Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic said the team were learning to understand Sarri’s strategy.

“A lot has changed,” said Pjanic.

“Everything can’t be perfect after just one month, there’s room from improvement.

Pochettino ‘happy with squad’ ahead of Bayern Champions League clash

London (AFP) – Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino said he was “so happy” with his squad as they prepare to face Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday after a turbulent few weeks.

Spurs have struggled to find consistency this season after an unsettling summer transfer window during which key players including Christian Eriksen were linked to moves that never materialised.

Last week’s League Cup exit against fourth-tier Colchester was a low point and Pochettino blamed that setback on “different agendas in the squad”.

But their 2-1 victory against Southampton on Saturday lifted them to fifth in the Premier League table and helped calm nerves.

Spurs let slip a 2-0 lead in their Champions League opener against Olympiakos to draw 2-2 but Pochettino pointed out that last season the club had just a single point after three games and still reached the final, where they lost to Liverpool.

“I am so happy with the squad and we’re in a position where everything is possible,” the Spurs boss told his pre-match press conference on Monday.

“We need to be calm and be strong in our mentality. The most important thing is the belief and spirit.”

Defender Jan Vertonghen, who has been linked with a move away from the Spurs, played down rumours of dressing room unrest.

“I am not going too much into that, the mood at this point is good,” he said. “It was a good win on Saturday. We showed who we really are.”

Vertonghen refused to be drawn on his contract negotiations, adding: “I would prefer not to go too deep into that (contract situation) but there is always some movement.

“I am very ambitious, I feel like I have a couple of good years left in me. I hope I can help the team.

“It is my eighth season here. I have had a great past and I am feeling great in every single way here. That is all I want to say on that.”

Pochettino said he would like to keep Vertonghen but that he was not part of the negotiations.

“I am open to everything but that is a dealing between the club, him and his agent,” Pochettino said.

Hazard ‘one goal’ from kick-starting Real career

Madrid (AFP) – Eden Hazard said on Monday he is ‘one goal’ away from launching his Real Madrid career having failed to score since joining the Spanish club this summer.

Hazard, 28, who cost Real 100 million euros ($109 million) in July, is yet to get off the mark during the new season with his appearances restricted to four matches due to a thigh injury.

“Honestly I feel at 100%, the injury is behind me. When I start scoring, being decisive, having good matches, it will all come together,” Hazard said ahead of playing Club Brugge in the Champions League on Tuesday.

“That’s what I’m missing, one good match, one goal, one pass, something to start my season.

“When I say it’s down to confidence, once I’m confident, I’ll give my best on the field.”

The 102-time Belgium international, who signed for the Spanish giants after impressing for Chelsea in the Premier League and Lille beforehand, only made his competitive debut for Zinedine Zidane’s side in mid-September due to the injury sustained in pre-season training.

Hazard has been the target of negative attention from the Spanish press, with some claiming he was overweight ahead of the new campaign.

“It’s normal that the criticism exists, they don’t hurt me, not at all. I’ve never paid them attention, I know when I play well, I know when I don’t play well,” he said.

“There was my injury, everybody expected I would score three goals a game.

“I need a little time, it’s up to me to give my maximum in training, take pleasure on the field, like I’ve done my whole career, and the goals will come,” he added.

Real host Brugge after falling to a humiliating 3-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in their opening Champions League game of the campaign.

They sit top of the La Liga table after seven matches with France international Karim Benzema their top goal-scorer on five, followed by Wales forward Gareth Bale on two.

Mercedes one-two win down to teamwork — Hamilton

Sochi (Russia) (AFP) – Lewis Hamilton paid tribute on Monday to the respect and team-work that enabled Mercedes to secure him victory in an unexpected one-two for the Silver Arrows in the Russian Grand Prix.

In stark contrast to the radio feuds, claims of a broken drivers’ agreement and reliability problems that undid rivals Ferrari’s bid for a fourth consecutive victory in Sunday’s race, the champions rediscovered their unity and sense of purpose to take full advantage.

Referring to his relationship with team-mate Valtteri Bottas, the defending five-time champion said: “We work together so it’s all about respect, having respect and, I think that respect has been there since day one.

“We talk about scenarios very openly. Valtteri has always been respectful in those scenarios and I think it’s vital that we are both acting accordingly, which we do, I think.”

Hamilton was responding to reporters’ questions after Sunday’s race at the Sochi Autodrom where a radio feud, over a perceived broken agreement, between Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel upset their bid for a victory to end Mercedes six-year dominance of the Russian race.

– Respectful –

Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff, who managed a strained relationship between Hamilton and his former team-mate Nico Rosberg, the 2016, champion, said he understood and sympathised with the position of Ferrari counterpart Mattia Binotto.

“It shows a few things, I think,” he said. “It is very difficult to manage drivers that have the aspiration to win the race and we have had that in the past –- and we still have it.

“That’s why we still have to discuss all the scenarios and be aware of how the driver functions and respect it.”

Wolff added that he did not believe Ferrari’s self-inflicted problems with their drivers had contributed to Hamilton seizing his first win in four races since the European summer break.

“No, I don’t think that won us the race,” he said. “I think it’s a side-story … But, in the end, it was something that needed to be covered from the management side.”

Bottas agreed with Hamilton, confirming that their relationship was respectful and professional despite the Briton sometimes gaining favour in tight racing situations.

He pointed out, however, that Mercedes’ one-two triumph owed most to the timing of a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) deployment when Vettel’s car had an engine failure.

“I think the team did all the right things -– starting on mediums to go long in the first stint -– but Ferrari had a strong car and were very quick so we were hoping for a VSC or Safety Car to come –- and when it did, it was like a miracle.”

Bundesliga switches to ESPN as US broadcaster

Berlin (AFP) – American sports network ESPN added to its collection of overseas football rights on Monday when it confirmed it has signed a six-year deal with the Bundesliga.

The German league is particularly attractive to US fans because 11 Americans are playing there, including some rising stars.

The Bundesliga was previously with Fox in the United States. That network now has no European leagues.

NBC continues to own the rights to the English Premier League, the domestic competition that attracts most interest in the United States, while the Champions League is on TNT and La Liga on BeIN.

ESPN owns the English cup competitions and Serie A but the Bundesliga gives it a chance to showcase some of the most exciting young American players.

US internationals Weston McKennie and Joshua Sargent are among the Americans playing in Germany and both were on hand to express their delight at the six-year contract which starts in August 2020.

Midfielder McKennie helped Schalke earn a shock 3-1 win at RB Leipzig on Saturday. Sargent, a 19-year-old striker, who made his US debut last year, helped set up a goal in Bremen’s 2-2 draw at Borussia Dortmund.

“Personally, I think it will be very cool that people can now watch me in action, because it’s the sports network I watched when growing up,” said Sargent.

The Bundesliga has stepped up its effort to compete internationally with the Premier League, adopting the slogan ‘Football As It’s Meant To Be’ and stressing that it draws more fans to matches and averages more goals per game.

ESPN pointed out in its press release that more than 50 Americans have played in the German top flight since 1986, more than in any other European League.

Spain court dismisses fraud case against Messi

Madrid (AFP) – Spain’s National Court on Monday said it had dismissed a complaint against Barcelona’s Lionel Messi filed by a former employee of the Argentine footballer’s foundation, who had accused him of fraud, embezzlement and money laundering.

In dismissing the case, the judge wrote that the complaint “was based on an account put together from stories in the press, without bringing even a single element that was personally and directly known” by the plaintiff.

The complaint had been filed in June by Federico Rettori, an Argentine national living in Majorca who formerly worked for Messi’s charity.

In it, he named the Barcelona striker, the charity, his father Jorge and brother Rodrigo and “all the people, as yet unidentified, who in one form or another administered or managed the funds at the Leo Messi Foundation,” the document said.

He claimed that funds received by the foundation which “should have been directed to social causes” instead went “towards various private activities or bank accounts that differed from those that were declared by the foundation”.

Last year, Rettori filed suit in Argentina on similar grounds. According to a judicial source, it prompted the opening of a preliminary investigation but so far, neither Messi nor his father have been charged.

Guardiola backs Fernandinho as Man City defensive crisis bites

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Pep Guardiola played down concerns over 34-year-old Fernandinho’s ability to cope with a high workload as he juggles his stretched defensive resources for Tuesday’s Champions League match against Dinamo Zagreb.

City are missing John Stones and Aymeric Laporte and the manager was forced to field the makeshift pairing of Nicolas Otamendi and midfielder Fernandinho in central defence against Everton on Saturday.

The Premier League champions had some shaky moments defensively at Goodison Park but emerged 3-1 winners to keep the gap to Liverpool at five points.

“If he is fit he can play (twice a week),” Guardiola said on Monday about Fernandinho. “It depends on him in terms of physical regeneration.”

“When Stones is back we will have an alternative,” he added. “Last season he started to struggle towards the end of the season. The previous season, he played every three days.”

Midfielder Rodri said the spate of defensive injuries was not an “excuse” for City, who won their Champions League opener 3-0 away to Shakhtar Donetsk.

“We have enough players to fit this problem,” he said. “We have players who can play in many positions like Fernandinho and (Oleksandr) Zinchenko. It’s a tough time for the team but it will make us stronger.”

Guardiola also had warm words for Riyad Mahrez, who impressed in the 3-1 win against Everton and has been directly involved in 17 goals in his past 17 starts for City in all competitions.

“He’s been so decisive, clinical. Defensively his commitment is higher this season and offensively every time he has the ball you have a feeling he is going to create something,” said the City boss.

“Hopefully he can maintain that level for a long time.”

Guardiola also believes his side need to make their supporters, who have had a love-hate relationship with UEFA competitions, excited by the Champions League, which they have never won.

“We have to seduce them. The only way to seduce them is winning games and playing good,” he said.

“The Premier League here in England is the most exciting. We make a poll and fans prefer that. But this competition is also good.”
