Euro 2020 draw offers unique incentive for 12 host nations

Dublin (AFP) – For the first time 12 nations will head into Sunday’s qualifying draw (1100GMT) for Euro 2020 with the extra incentive of playing on home soil should they make it to the 24-team tournament in two years time.

Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome and Saint Petersburg are the 12 cities that will host matches across the continent to celebrate the 60th anniversary since the first European Championships.

The draw in Dublin will see UEFA’s 55 nations split into 10 groups with the top two in each section making up the first 20 teams to qualify.

However, a maximum of two of the hosts nations can be paired together in each group to give all 12 the chance of experiencing a home tournament with a guarantee of at least two home games in the group stages.

England stand to gain most from home advantage with both semi-finals and the final, as well as three group games and a last 16 tie set to be played at Wembley.

The Three Lions have enjoyed argubly their best year since winning the World Cup on home soil in 1966 as Gareth Southgate’s side reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in Russia and then beat Spain and Croatia to reach the inaugural finals of the Nations League next summer.

Southgate is well aware of the extra inspiration of playing in a major tournament at home as he was part of the England side that reached the semi-finals at Euro ’96.

“What the players are going to experience is close to what we experienced in 1996 and in ’66. That’s incredible for everybody,” said the England manager.

The Wembley factor could be key to ending England’s half century without winning a major tournament with Southgate’s exciting young squad having renergised a nation’s support.

“I think the most pleasing thing of the year has been the connection with the fans and being able to share brilliant experiences with them,” added Southgate after exacting some measure of revenge for defeat to Croatia in the World Cup semi-finals in a thrilling Nations League group finale earlier this month.

“I can’t remember the new Wembley like that. We have exciting players that give them excitement.”

England, Switzerland, Portugal and the Netherlands are guaranteed to end up in a five-team group to free them up from qualifiers for the Nations League finals in June.

Argentina humiliated by ‘Copa Conquistadores’ final

Buenos Aires (AFP) – The first ever Copa Libertadores final between Argentina’s two most popular clubs was supposed to be the “match of the century” and a football festival that would propel the country back into the spotlight following yet another World Cup debacle.

Well, Argentina is back in the spotlight but for all the wrong reasons and the decision to play the twice-postponed “superclasico” final second leg between Buenos Aires arch rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors in the homeland of Latin America’s colonizers, is a painful humiliation.

All over social media, the prestigious competition — the most important club tournament in South America — has been rechristened the “Copa Conquistadores de America.”

In one meme on social media there is a picture of Christopher Columbus landing in South America to initiate the European colonization of the Americas and holding aloft the Copa Libertadores trophy, whereas he’s usually depicted with the flag of Spain’s Catholic Monarchs, Queen Isabella of Castille and King Ferdinand II of Aragon.

“It’s as if we weren’t allowed to dance the tango. We’re destroying football,” lamented Gustavo Alfaro, the coach of Argentine team Huracan.

“We don’t want hooligans or complicit authorities. They’ve no right to take River-Boca away from us.”

For the first time ever, a Copa Libertaodres final will be played outside the continent, with Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu stadium picked as the unlikely venue.

It all came about because last weekend the original second leg clash at River’s Monumental stadium — the first leg finished 2-2 at Boca’s Bombonera ground — was called off after Boca players were injured when their team bus came under attack from their rivals’ fans.

Windows were shattered, spraying players with broken glass while police fired tear gas to disperse the troublemakers, but that entered the team bus and left Boca’s footballers suffering from smoke inhalation.

Boca refused to play the match and it was postponed 24 hours, only to then be called off indefinitely the next day.

Boca petitioned South American football’s governing body CONMEBOL to be awarded the trophy but that was rejected on Thursday.

CONMEBOL, which is headquartered in Paraguay, decided Argentina was in no fit state to host such an important match and ordered it played elsewhere, with Real president Florentino Perez jumping on the opportunity and offering use of the Bernabeu for free.

– ‘Everybody lost’ –

“Why did they accept so easily that this match wouldn’t be played in Argentina?” asked analyst Alejandro Wall on the Tiempo Argentina website.

All you need to know about the Euro 2020 qualifying draw

Dublin (AFP) – A unique European Championships in 2020 that will be hosted in 12 cities across the continent will begin to take shape when the qualifying draw takes place in Dublin on Sunday at 1100GMT.

How does it work?

UEFA’s 55 nations will be split into five groups of six teams and five groups of five with the top two from each section becoming the first 20 teams to qualify.

What about the Nations League?

Some sides have already guaranteed themselves the safety net of a playoff to qualify via UEFA’s new Nations League competition in March 2020, but only should they fail to make the top two in their qualifying group.

Results from the Nations League also determined the seedings for Sunday’s draw with the 55 countries split into seven pots.

Why seven pots of seeds?

The 10 top seeds are split into two pots with the four nations to have qualified for the Nations League finals (England, Switzerland, Portugal and The Netherlands) in their own pot to guarantee they are in a five-team group so they don’t have to play any qualifiers when the Nations League finals take place in June.

Who are the other top seeds?

Pot one will contain world champions France, Belgium, Croatia, Italy, Poland and Spain.

Who are in the other pots?

Germany’s relegation from their Nations League group means they drop into pot two alongside Iceland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine, Denmark, Sweden, Russia, Austria, Wales, Czech Republic.

Pot 3 – Slovakia, Turkey, Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Norway, Serbia, Finland, Bulgaria and Israel

Pot 4 – Hungary, Romania, Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Cyprus, Estonia, Slovenia, Lithuania and Georgia

Pot 5 – FYR Macedonia, Kosovo, Belarus, Luxembourg, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Gibraltar and the Faroe Islands

Pot 6 – Latvia, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Malta and San Marino

When are the matches played?

All qualifying matches will be played between March and November 2019 with double headers in March, June, September, October and November. Those sides involved in the Nations League finals won’t have any qualifiers in June.

When and where does the tournament take place?

The 12 host cities are: Amsterdam, Baku, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Glasgow, London, Munich, Rome and Saint Petersburg.

The tournament will take place between June 12 and July 12 2020.

Remembering David Villa’s legacy with NYCFC and MLS

Before New York City Football Club had uniforms or a fan base, or an academy, or any semblance of a footballing identity, they had David Villa.

The decorated Spanish striker became the club’s first-ever player on June 2, 2014. He joined as the Spanish national teams all-time leading goal scorer, a World Cup winner in 2010, and a winner of both La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.

Villa’s stature in MLS was larger than life. He was the latest in a new wave of aging European stars who sought career renaissances in Major League Soccer.

Almost four and a half years later, Villa announced on Wednesday that he is leaving NYCFC, and MLS. While he won’t retire, his journey in the United States has come to an end.

And what a journey it was. Villa didn’t just exceed expectations in MLS. He shattered them.

Following Villa’s arrival, the league started to shift away from aging European stars, and more towards younger, lesser known attacking talent from South America. A reason for this change, perhaps, is two of Villa’s NYCFC teammates — Andrea Pirlo and Frank Lampard — were unable to adjust to the American game at their older age.

Even with an influx in younger designated players, Villa thrived in MLS despite playing well into his mid-thirties. In 124 MLS matches, he tallied 80 goals for NYCFC, leading them to three playoff berths, and claiming 2016 MLS Most Valuable Player honors.

Right off the bat, Villa made an instant impact, scoring 18 times in NYCFC’s inaugural season, including the first ever goal at Yankee Stadium.

In 2016, Villa tallied 23 goals, leading NYCFC to their first ever playoff berth, and winning MVP honors along the way.

In 2017, the Spaniard scored 24 goals in all competitions as NYCFC again finished with the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

SEE MORE: Schedule of MLS games on US TV and streaming

Villa had his fair share of terrific moments. A hat trick in a pulsating Hudson River derby, the opening goal at the Stadium versus the Revolution, an audacious chip from midfield against the Union, to name just a few.

He finished his MLS career with four All-Star selections in four years, 80 goals, 26 assists, and 18 game-winning goals.

But most importantly, he was the club’s first signing, and their first captain. He has been the face of the franchise for almost the entirety of its existence, and moves on to Japan with an unassailable legacy in MLS despite ultimately failing to win the club their first ever MLS Cup.

“I truly believe that David will be remembered as one of the best players to ever play in MLS. He will forever be a legend amongst all of our wonderful supporters and everyone here at NYCFC wishes David nothing but the best in the remainder of his career. He will always be a part of NYCFC,” said Claudio Reyna, the club’s sporting director.

Villa’s loss, from a footballing sense, may not be as important as one may think. He struggled to stay on the field this year due to various injuries, scoring 15 goals in 23 matches, his lowest career mark in MLS.

The emphasis of the team has clearly shifted away from Villa, as other players such as Jesus Medina and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi stepped into more prominent roles this year.

Essentially, now more than ever, the time was right for Villa and NYCFC to part ways, and they do so with nothing but fond memories.

Here’s to David Villa, a man who despite swimming against the current when it came to the direction of the league in regards to designated players, played every match with his heart on his sleeve, and produced at a high level in the biggest moments.

Both Major League Soccer and New York City Football Club’s profiles have been elevated significantly since Villa put ink to paper in 2014, and both the league and club have the Spaniard to thank.

Adios, el Guaje.

Buoyant Spurs aim to end Arsenal’s unbeaten run

London (AFP) – Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks has warned Arsenal that his side are in the perfect form to end their bitter rivals’ 18-match unbeaten run on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team head to the Emirates Stadium on a six-match winning streak which has carried them to third in the Premier League table.

Tottenham are also on a high after salvaging their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League last 16 with a 1-0 win over Inter Milan on Wednesday.

Revitalised by new boss Unai Emery, Arsenal’s own form has been just as impressive over the last three months and they sit only three points behind Tottenham.

But England international Winks says the north London derby has come at the right time for Tottenham as they chase a first win at their hated neighbours’ stadium since 2010.

“It is a game the fans want to win and one that we want to win. Three games in a week is going to be tough, but confidence is high,” Winks said.

“Of course they are beatable. The form we are in right now, it is probably the perfect time to go there. It is going to be a good game.”

The 196th clash between these feuding city-rivals promises to be a fascinating study of two teams who started the season with differing ambitions.

While Tottenham hope to mount a genuine title challenge, Arsenal would be happy with a top four finish after emerging from the dark final days of Arsene Wenger’s reign.

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 11 league games, but have yet to defeat one of their top four rivals this season after losing to Manchester City and Chelsea and drawing with Liverpool.

A victory would give Tottenham their highest points total after 14 games of a Premier League season, while a draw would mean they equal their best haul of 31 points in the 2011-12 campaign.

The Gunners have lost just one of their last 25 top-flight home matches against Tottenham, but they have won only one of the last eight league derbies.

Emery’s side endured a long trip to Kiev in midweek for their Europa League win against Vorskla, but the Gunners rested 10 players to keep them fresh for the derby.

– Positive momentum –

Rob Holding was the only player to retain his place from the previous Premier League match at Bournemouth and the defender is hoping Emery gives him the chance to subdue Harry Kane on Sunday.

Odds stacked against Congolese club in CAF Cup title decider

Johannesburg (AFP) – Congolese side V Club admit it will be “very difficult” to overcome a 3-0 deficit against Raja Casablanca of Morocco Sunday when they host the CAF Confederation Cup final second leg.

There have been 108 two-leg CAF club finals in four competitions with only Mouloudia Alger of Algeria succeeding after trailing by three goals following the first match.

Having lost 3-0 at Hafia of Guinea in the 1976 African Cup of Champions Clubs (now CAF Champions League) final, they won by the same score at home and triumphed on penalties.

“It will be very difficult to pull back three goals,” conceded long-serving V Club coach Florent Ibenge ahead of the return match at the 80,000-seat Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa.

“I barely recognised my team in the first leg of the final. There was no positive aggression from the boys despite it being a continental final.

“Raja won the battle for possession every time the ball ran loose. My boys were slower, less committed and too negative.

“We seemed obsessed with defending, retreating far too close to our goalmouth at the slightest hint of a Moroccan attack.

“However, there is always hope in football and we must improve 100 percent to have any chance of success.”

V Club did win 2-0 at home to Raja during August in the group phase of the Confederation Cup through goals from Fabrice Ngoma and 10-goal leading scorer Jean-Marc Makusu Mundele.

Mundele retired injured midway through the opening half of the first leg, but trained this week and is expected to play, possibly as a substitute.

The victory over Raja will offer a glimmer of hope, and so will a 17-match winning streak at home in the competition since 2009 when they beat Malanti Chiefs from Swaziland (now eSwatini).

– Resilient –

The most recent of those victories was 4-0 over Al Masry of Egypt in a semi-final second leg after a goalless first encounter.

However, Raja are likely to prove far more resilient opponents than Masry, whose cause was not helped by constant arguing with the match officials.

The Moroccans have won five and drawn one of seven away matches in the Confederation Cup en route to the final, scoring 13 goals and conceding eight.

But technical director Fathi Jamal has warned the squad to “remain humble” and guard against overconfidence.

“Overall victory is not assured despite building a good first-leg advantage. We have not lifted the trophy yet,” he stressed.

Spanish coach Garrido close to historic African success

Johannesburg (AFP) – Spaniard Juan Carlos Garrido will become the first coach to win the CAF Confederation Cup with different clubs if Raja Casablanca of Morocco lift the trophy in Kinshasa Sunday.

Raja are well placed to succeed having defeated V Club of the Democratic Republic of Congo 3-0 in Casablanca last Sunday in the first leg of the final.

Garrido, who began coaching in Spain when only 24 years old, guided Al Ahly of Egypt to victory over Sewe San Pedro of the Ivory Coast in the 2014 Confederation Cup title decider.

The 49-year-old coached in Spain, Belgium, Egypt and Saudi Arabia before joining Raja, who are seeking a sixth African title in various competitions, last year.

Veteran coach Faouzi Benzarti has won the Confederation Cup twice, but with the same Tunisian club, Etoile Sahel.

Guardiola admits FIFA plan will change City’s transfer policy

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Pep Guardiola says FIFA proposals designed to limit the number of players allowed to be loaned out to rival clubs will seriously alter Manchester City’s business model.

City and Chelsea are among the Premier League teams who will be most seriously impacted by the proposals that, from 2020, clubs will only be allowed to have between six and eight players loaned out to other clubs.

At the moment, Chelsea have an astonishing 39 players on loan with rival clubs across Europe, while City have 28, one more than Wolves but nearly twice as many as any other Premier League club.

“We are going to adapt to the rules. The new rules are coming, we’re going to see the situation about loan players and see what we can do,” Guardiola told reporters.

“The club is going to adapt if FIFA decide to do that. If we cannot loan them, they are going to come back here.

“If we don’t believe they are going to play, if we cannot loan them we are going to sell them. It’s simple.

“We’re going to see before they take the players where they are going to play, and if it is not possible to loan them we are not going to buy them.”

The new measures could spark something of a fire sale at City over the next 18 months before the rules come into force in the summer of 2020.

Many City youngsters, from the under-23 and academy squads, have been loaned out to ‘sister’ clubs who are part of the City Football Group that is spearheaded by Guardiola’s Premier League champions.

City have players on loan all over the world within their own group, from Melbourne in Australia to Girona in Spain, as well as a number of young stars playing at lower levels in Britain.

But Guardiola pointed out the example of young Brazilian Douglas Luiz, who was unable to obtain a work permit to play in England for City and instead moved to Girona in La Liga, as an example of how the new system may limit players’ development.

– Incredible potential –

“It’s not good, for me,” said Guardiola. “For the young players to come through the academy, the next step is the first team.

“Loan players are in good leagues, so to then come here to play (for academy teams) in front of 10 people is not good for their development.

Hoilett winner lifts Cardiff out of relegation zone

London (AFP) – Junior Hoilett scored late on to earn Cardiff a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Wolves in the Premier League on Friday to lift Neil Warnock’s team out of the relegation zone.

For Warnock this was the perfect present on the eve of his 70th birthday after Aron Gunnarsson cancelled out Matt Doherty’s opener for Wolves.

In the 18th minute Raul Jimenez rose highest at a corner to glance a header on target and Doherty was on hand to slot home with his left foot after a fine save from Cardiff keeper Neil Etheridge.

Doherty’s goal was the difference between the two sides at the break. Ruben Neves curled an effort just wide shortly before the break, before Cardiff had penalty appeals waved away after Callu Paterson went down in the area.

Cardiff equalised shortly after the hour mark.

Harry Arter lifted the ball back into the area and Wolves keeper Rui Patricio found his path to the ball blocked, allowing Sean Morrison to flick on for Gunnarsson who lashed home from close range.

Warnock’s side turned the game on its head with a stunning strike from Hoilett. The ball broke to the Canadian on the left edge of the area and he curled a first-time shot into the far corner.

Cardiff held on to seal a victory that lifted them up to 15th ahead of Saturday’s fixtures.

Defeat extended Wolves’ winless run to six league matches, stretching back to their 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace on October 6.

Cardiff midfielder Gunnarsson was delighted his side were able to deliver an early birthday present for boss Warnock.

“That’s for the gaffer, it’s his birthday tomorrow,” said the Iceland international.

“First half wasn’t good enough, second half we came out fighting and I think we deserved those three points.

“We came out (after half-time) on the front foot. We fought a little bit harder for each other and really wanted the three points.”

Cameroon stripped of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, search on for new hosts

Accra (AFP) – Cameroon was on Friday stripped of hosting the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations due to delays in preparing for the continental showpiece, organisers the Confederation of African Football announced.

“Today we took the decision to withdraw the 2019 CAN from Cameroon,” CAF president Ahmad Ahmad told a press conference in Accra, seven months before the 2019 opening match.

He was speaking after a 10-hour CAF executive meeting held behind closed doors in the Ghanaian capital.

Ahmad said “a task force” would be set up to launch an appeal for offers “to determine a new organising country between now and the end of the year”.

South Africa and Morocco are two frontline contenders to step in as hosts for the event — expanded to 24 teams for the first time — in place of Cameroon, who won the last edition in 2017 in Gabon.

Morocco, who lost out to a United States/Mexico/Canada bid to host the 2026 World Cup, have regularly been reported as possible replacements.

The North Africans had been set to stage the 2015 Cup of Nations before being stripped of its hosting rights in a row over the Ebola outbreak.

South Africa is the only African country to stage a World Cup, in 2010, and last staged the Cup of Nations in 2013.

“I know that there are countries which are interested, rest assured, candidate countries will come forward,” said Ahmad.

“We know there won’t be many (new candidates) but we will leave the task force to evaluate them and to set up visits in order to select the organisers of the CAN by the end of the year”.

Alarm bells were sounded over the 2019 event at a September executive committee meeting in Egyptian resort Sharm el-Sheikh when CAF noted “a significant delay in the realisation of the infrastructures” necessary for holding the Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

– Tense security –

A report of the last two inspection visits to central African state Cameroon were made at Friday’s meeting.

CAF inspectors recently travelled to the country, which last hosted the tournament in 1972, to check security, infrastructure, stadiums and accommodation.

Cameroon is experiencing a tense security situation with persistent attacks by Boko Haram jihadists in the north and a conflict between the army and separatists in the two English-speaking regions.

That recalls the trauma that preceded the 2010 Cup of Nations in Angola, when the Togo team bus was attacked with three dead two days before the opening match.

Cameroon stripped of hosting 2019 Africa Cup of Nations

Accra (AFP) – Cameroon was on Friday stripped of hosting the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations due to delays in preparing for the continental showpiece, organisers the Confederation of African Football announced.

“Today we took the decision to withdraw the 2019 CAN from Cameroon,” CAF president Ahmad Ahmad told a press conference in Accra.

He was speaking after a 10 hour CAF executive meeting held behind closed doors in the Ghanaian capital.

Nigerian Alex Iwobi, Senegalese Idrissa Gueye and Ivorian Wilfried Zaha complete the list of nominees who play in the Premier League.

History-making French coaches Nicolas Dupuis and Corentin Martins are among 10 nominations for the best coach award.

Barcelona send Umtiti to Doha for knee fix

Barcelona (AFP) – Key Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti will fly out to Doha for specialised treatment on a recurring left knee injury, the Spanish champions said on Friday.

Umtiti is said to be keen to avoid going under the knife and is seeking a softer solution.

Considered one of the best centre-backs in the world, the left-footed Frenchman has played just eight games for Barcelona this season because of the recurring pain in his knee.

The 2018 World Cup winner played in the 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid at the weekend but that was his first game in almost two months due to the pain which returned after the bruising game in Madrid.

“Samuel Umtiti will follow a plan of conservative treatment with the objective of curing the discomfort in his left knee,” Barce reported on their website Friday.

“The player will travel to Doha, Qatar where he will follow this therapeutic plan under the supervision of the club’s medical services.”

Catalan sports daily Sport said Umtiti “would not play again in 2018”, claiming he would stay in Doha several weeks.

Another sports daily Mundo Deportivo said the player and club wished to avoid surgery in the search for a solution to the pain.

Pochettino plays down Tottenham’s title bid

London (AFP) – Mauricio Pochettino claims Tottenham should not be regarded as serious contenders for the Premier League title this season.

Pochettino’s side have made a strong start to the campaign, winning 10 of their opening 13 Premier League games to reach third place.

They showed their quality with a 3-1 win against Chelsea last weekend and sit just five points behind leaders Manchester City.

But City and Liverpool have both beaten the north London club this season and Tottenham boss Pochettino insists it is still too soon to expect his team to win the title

“We are closer than last season to the top. I cannot say we’re a contender for the title,” Pochettino said on Friday.

“I think Manchester City is in a different level and of course clubs like Liverpool, Chelsea, the same, Manchester United and Arsenal.

“They make more investment than us and in a different level.

“But If we’re capable in the last few months of the season to be in a good position in the table, we’re going to try.”

Not only has Pochettino played down his side’s chances of winning the title, he also ranks this season’s challenge of getting into the top four as the toughest yet.

“I think it’s tougher than last season because at the same point as this season, last season I think we were second or in a better position,” he said.

“I think yes, to be in the top four this season will be tougher than the previous season.

“But we have the belief that we can do it and deliver a very good job and that’s the most important thing, because we have the quality.”

Klopp warns Liverpool to beware of Everton threat

London (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool that in-form Everton are capable of ending the Reds’ 19-year unbeaten record in Merseyside derbies at Anfield.

Not since Kevin Campbell fired Everton to a 1-0 win in September 1999 have Everton made a successful trip to the home of their hated neighbours across Stanley Park.

Liverpool are also unbeaten in the last 17 Merseyside derbies at any venue — a record run for that fixture dating back to 2010.

But Reds boss Klopp insists in-form Everton have been revitalised under new boss Marco Silva and pose a genuine threat to Liverpool’s derby supremacy.

“He has the best squad. They brought in players he wanted. Richarlison, what a player he is, last year already (Theo) Walcott came in, this year Bernard came in, (Andre) Gomes, (Yerry) Mina,” Klopp told reporters on Friday

“Since I’ve been at Liverpool, Everton was always really busy but now it’s the best-tuned squad.

“One or two years ago (Wayne) Rooney came back, (Gylfi) Sigurdsson came, they said they could not play because of lack of speed, but everything is there.

“The development and improvement is obvious. Analyse Everton and tell me it will be an easy game, tell me their weaknesses: they defend really good, have good players in all positions.

“It will not be the most easy game in the world but no-one expects that in a derby and we shouldn’t do that this time so we will not.”

The last three Everton managers to visit Anfield in the Premier League – Roberto Martinez, Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce – left with, respectively, a 4-0 defeat, a 3-1 defeat and a 1-1 draw.

However, significant investment and a change in playing style introduced by Silva have seen the Toffees move up to sixth in the table.

Suitably impressed, Klopp down-played Liverpool’s derby dominance, saying: “If you wouldn’t say that I wouldn’t even think about it. How can I know what people make of that? I’m a not bit interested.

“You cannot make anything with these results in the past. It is good that we won these games or got results from these games, the most exciting one was the late winner of Sadio (Mane) at Everton – that felt unbelievable.

“There were good games we played at home to Everton but we have to make sure as a club we create an atmosphere so exceptional it will make it a little bit easier for the players to come into it 100 per cent in a fighting mood.”

Ranieri expects “special” match with Chelsea

London (AFP) – Claudio Ranieri says his Fulham side are ready for the daunting task of playing one of his former clubs Chelsea on Sunday, an occasion he says will be “special” for him personally.

The 67-year-old Italian — who acquired the nickname ‘The Tinkerman’ during his four year spell at Chelsea for his habit of changing the starting line-up — takes his struggling side there on the back of a welcome win over Southampton.

The hosts however must rebound following their first defeat of the season when they got overrun at Tottenham Hotspur.

Ranieri, who replaced Serbia’s Slavisa Jokanovic earlier this month following a dreadful start, says he is pleased with the mentality of his squad.

“Whenever I play my former teams, it’s always special,” said Ranieri at his Friday press conference.

“We’re ready.

“I asked for little things at the beginning, like fighting spirit, but we can do everything better.”

Ranieri, who delivered the remarkable 2016 title win at Leicester, said Chelsea would offer a sterner test than their fellow strugglers Southampton had.

The measure of Fulham’s task on Sunday is that their opponents are 20 points better off than them with the visitors bottom of the table and Chelsea are fourth.

“When you play against Chelsea, you have to be very attentive, but we’re working hard and I’m confident it’ll be a very good derby,” said Ranieri

Ranieri, who was sacked the season following Leicester’s title triumph as they made a poor start to the defence of their crown, says his compatriot Maurizio Sarri had done a very good job with Chelsea.

“Sarri has a very good group of players, and play with the right philosophy,” said Ranieri.

“He’s a very good coach and deserves to be where he is.”

Liverpool eye Merseyside derby boost after Euro flop

Liverpool (AFP) – Jurgen Klopp must lift Liverpool’s shattered spirits as the Reds aim to bounce back from their latest European setback in a crucial Merseyside derby against resurgent Everton on Sunday.

Marco Silva takes Everton to Anfield with the blue half of Merseyside looking for their first victory on their hated neighbours’ turf since 1999.

Everton enter the weekend in sixth place in the Premier League, having recorded five victories and just one defeat in their last seven games.

Their optimism stands in contrast to the first real signs of problems in Klopp’s camp this season.

While Liverpool remain unbeaten in the league, and stood two points behind leaders Manchester City ahead of the weekend fixtures, successive away defeats in their Champions League group at Red Star Belgrade and Paris Saint-Germain have raised questions about their trophy-winning potential.

Roberto Firmino was the latest member of last season’s impressive Liverpool forward line to come in for criticism following a 2-1 defeat in Paris on Wednesday which leaves his team facing an anxious final group game against Napoli as they seek to guarantee progress to the knock-out stages.

The Brazilian forward has managed to hit the net only three times in 13 Premier League games to date this season and, in comparison to his 15 last term, Firmino’s productivity has certainly dipped.

Among many factors put forward for Liverpool’s slight drop off in attacking prowess, fatigue seems one of the most obvious, with Klopp adamant that he will maintain strong bids for success in both the Premier and Champions Leagues.

Liverpool have played 18 games in both competitions to date, with Firmino and Mohamed Salah having featured in every one of them. Sadio Mane has missed just one.

– Winning formula –

But, after starting the season with seven consecutive wins inside the opening six weeks, Liverpool have won five times in 12 league and cup games in the 10 weeks since.

Reds defender Virgil van Dijk is at a loss to explain Liverpool’s issues of late, but he refuses to panic.

“We don’t need to think we are a s*** team, basically. It can happen. But the frustrating thing is how we conceded the goals and then it’s always difficult to come back,” he said.

“I don’t know if there’s any explanation for that right now because I can’t think of one, otherwise we should have used it already.”

Guardiola urges Diaz not to quit City

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Pep Guardiola insists Manchester City have done everything in their power to keep Brahim Diaz, but he will not try to stop the young star from leaving in the new year.

The 19-year-old Spanish midfielder, who is out of contract with the Premier League champions next summer, has been frustrated at his lack of first team opportunities under Guardiola.

His only starts have been in the League Cup, in which he has made three, while his Premier League experience with City has been limited to five substitute outings.

That has led to reports that Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain are both interested in signing him offering him guarantees of more first-team experience.

Diaz could even start talking to foreign clubs as early as January and agree a pre-contract.

City manager Guardiola insists he will not stand in the player’s way if that is his wish.

“We want him, we want to extend his contract and we’ll do everything, but it’s in his hands,” Guardiola told reporters on Friday.

“My advice if he doesn’t want to stay, he has to leave. Before we arrived it was the same with Jadon, Phil. He has to decide and it’s no more than that.”

Jadon Sancho is another City academy product who opted to move abroad – in his case to Borussia Dortmund – and has seen his career blossom with three full England appearances having come his way under Gareth Southgate.

Phil Foden, meanwhile, has suffered similar frustrations to the pair in trying to break into Guardiola’s team, although City are confident that his local roots will convince him to sign a long-term deal.

– Imperious City –

“It’s what it is, the market is the market,” Guardiola said.

“They cannot say we didn’t do absolutely everything to take care of them, him and his family – as a human being, as a person, as a football player.

“We cannot push more than we pushed with Brahim for example or with the others. They arrive as young kids, but the market is the market.

“City go around England to take players, they work at other clubs and want to stay there.

“At Barcelona, there were many players, for example Cesc Fabregas, wanted to leave and go to Arsenal, it happens always this situation.

“All we can do is speak with the families, find out what they want to do with these guys. We tell them the truth, how complicated it is in some periods.

Most-watched soccer games on US TV for November 13-26, 2018

Last Saturday afternoon’s London Derby between Spurs and Chelsea averaged 824,000 views on the NBC broadcast network, the most for a Premier League match on NBC since September 1. The Premier League has seen more than a 13% drop in viewership in October and November when compared to the first two months of the season, shedding over 100,000 average viewers per match.

Mexico’s two matches against Argentina were unsurprisingly the two most-watched matches of the November international break with both matches averaging 879,000 viewers across UniMás and Univision Deportes. The United States’ away trip to England and Italy averaged just 363,000 viewers on ESPN2, FOX Sports 1 and UniMás with the match against England grabbing the most viewers at 455,000.

The MLS Conference Finals first leg matches were the least watched since 2015 with a 15% drop in viewership compared to last season. ESPN’s broadcast accounted for most of that with Atlanta United’s 3-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls earning 85,000 fewer viewers than the Columbus Crew and Toronto FC’s 0-0 draw to open the Conference Finals in 2017.
